Unless they're constantly moving, why not just put them in front of the table, and not draw the part of that's supposed to be behind?

The Rumpus Room / Re: Happy Birthday Thread!

Thank you and reciprocal Happy Birthday to my birthday brothers.

This looks fantastic.

Yeah, I've seen states in the US reporting a number of deaths that's very close to the number of cases, which is extremely unlikely and must reflect the fact that people are only being tested if they're in a bad condition.

Yes, the likelihood of infection might not increase for any one person, but for a group of 100,000 it's got to be about 200 times higher than 500?

Everything is fine in Britain. Thanks to Brexit, we're too plucky and independent to be affected by things happening in the real world.

Great stuff, my module is getting pretty old. I've put a link to this one on the first post.

To be specific, there is

  • Hard Brexit (clean break)
  • Soft Brexit (e.g., Norwegian model)
  • Remain.

I'm afraid I think that's a simplification. "Clean break" implies a degree of simplicity and, well, cleanliness, and a hard Brexit would have been chaotic. More importantly, there are lots of soft Brexits, and almost all of them are very unpopular. Before the referendum, many Leave advocates were insisting we'd remain within the single market, EU citizens would be allowed to stay etc.

The reason May couldn't get her deal through (or win a majority) is that she was offering a pragmatic compromise. And that was just as unacceptable to the disaster capitalists who wanted a hard Brexit as it was to the remainers who wanted no Brexit at all. Johnson's marketing genius was to talk a load of old bollocks and offer people the wonderful, sunlit Brexit they were promised in the first place. On closer examination, it's going to look a lot like May's deal.

Like fernewelten said, I guess the federal election at the very least gave people the reassurance and peace of mind that the referendum results did indeed reflect the will of the public. Wishing you guys the best with your new venture!

As Snarky said, unfortunately not. The remain / 2nd referendum vote was split between the Lib Dems and Labour. Meanwhile, the Brexit party stood down in constituencies where they might have pulled votes away from the Tories. So the victory reflects a Labour collapse (losing remainers to the Lib Dems and brexiters to the Brexit Party) rather than a Tory surge.

To put that another way, we're definitely leaving. But the UK is still 50/50 on Brexit, and it's highly acrimonious.

Well, let's hope the Leavers were right, and it'll all be long summer evenings with warm beer and boules from here on in.

My prediction is, if the Tories win the next General Election, they'll try to position the UK as a convenient tax haven off the coast of the EU, slashing taxes and workers rights to attract industry in the regions and financial transactions to the City. In 10 years time the economy will be growing and Brexit will be declared a success. But most of us won't see that growth, as wages continue to stagnate and the cost of living continues to rise. Bugger all will be done to tackle climate change, never mind the mindboggling intersection of climate change and global migration. On the upside, some of the people who voted for Brexit will have died.

Terrific animation!

Thank you for the feedback Laura. It was 100% my idea, nothing to do with Walter Murch. Walter who?!
#233
There's one other thing that's tricky about criticism. I think Walter Murch discusses it in In The Blink Of An Eye:

Audiences are good at noticing when something is wrong, but bad at identifying the problem and even worse at suggesting solutions. The thing they tell you about is often not the problem - just the point where they noticed that there was a problem. "The comedy scene is bad." Is it? Or is it not working because it comes after the scene where the bomb is planted, and the audience is distracted?

As everyone else has said, the best solution is to seek feedback from people you respect - and who know what they're talking about. And when they say, "you should give her a gun"  you can ignore that. But maybe you should think about what prompted the suggestion. Maybe the character is (e.g.) not active enough in the story.

I spoke with the creator about it briefly during the Kickstarter, who seemed like a well-intentioned guy. It's presented as political satire, but it's mostly a take-off of YouTube personalities/controversies - certainly a subject worthy of mockery, but not really politics in general.

I can see why he wants to make an "anti-hate" game, without racist slurs, depictions of bigotry etc. But, if the player can be an "alt-right prick" who doesn't actually do any of the nasty stuff... in what sense is that satirical of the alt-right?  It seems to me that the ostensibly right-wing play-style is debating "facts and logic" in the "marketplace of ideas". So then... is the left-wing option punching people? While that's obviously hilarious, I'm not sure it treats both sides of the "civility" argument to the same level of satirical scorn. I just think there might be a fundamental problem in trying to make a politically neutral political satire.

Also, Jon subsequently published Heaven's Vault, which only has 2 dialogue choices at any point... but I think he's right that there's something generally satisfying about 3.
#236
That's an excellent one! Though it is from 2018. But still, a very helpful talk.

I *think* that the pixelate node just prevents the subsequent scaling node from using smooth scaling.
#238
The end result looks great - but am I right in thinking it's just a matter of using nodes to shrink and then scale back up without smoothing?

The stream works for once!
