General Discussion / Re: NES or SNES?
Fri 17/06/2005 22:17:28
The console you are looking for is the SNES, the greatest console in history. Graphics on the NES (and it kills me to say this) aren't of the quality of the Sega Master System, but the SNES is just so much better than the Mega Drive.

Don't listen to those that would lead you down the false path of Sega, particularly Scummbuddy and his cartridge eating comrades.

Plus a plumber could easily beat a hedgehog - even a fast one.

We live in an age without heroes...
So it's pretty good going for arch-villains and the like. This week's topic is:

Nemeses
(Which I believe is the plural of nemesis)

Entries must be:

The evil version of anything (game characters, famous people, household appliances etc.)
100x100 pixels or less
No less than 20x20 pixels (I'm looking at you, skullkid22)
256 colours

Here's an example. Think Postman pat ... think evil Postman Pat:

It's as simple as that.

This is excellent. What's most impressive is the way that the character looks like the ol'shattenjager, while having been given a distinct neo-noir look.

As for improvements, I think his torso may not be quite long enough. (I do have an inordinately long torso myself, so I might not be the best judge).

I think the most interesting thing about the sprite is the way it's clearly Gabriel Knight, but it is still in your style big brother. It'd be fun to see other well known characters re-formed into different AGSers styles.

Critics' Lounge / Re: Squid Wars: Episode I

A few points:

‘Vinegar!' Luke instantly asked.

If he asked there should be a question mark, if he exclaimed there should be an exclaimation mark.

‘A dual saber, impressive.' Octi fathomed.

This doesn't make sense, and blunts the effect of a nautical pun on 'fathom'.

'Yes. Vinegar has imprisoned me, tortured me, and literally tore me apart.'

If he was torn apart, how is he walking?

More importantly:

If you are spoofing Star Wars, why doesn't your story follow the same path as Star Wars? The events you recount never occur across 6 highly spoofable movies.

Tell a story, don't just list a sequence of events that show no progression.

The story's first comma is unnessessary. Many, many commas are missing from that point onwards, particularly in dialogue.

Finally, use paragraphs.

Hey what program is used to make those 3d pictures? I realy don`t know

Blender 3d, freeware software.

Though Henry was originally modelled in the free Limited Edition of Metasequoia:

Get well soon BorisZ!

I'll PM m0ds and see if he'll pick the winner...

Here's Lil' Henry in a whistful mood, with ears-as-per-original-sketch and a new chain.

What thinkst thou?

I am going to opeation at monday (6/6). If I am not back by deadline (I am sure I will, but...) I would like m0ds to pick winner.

The Photoshop Contest really is surgery-central right now... good luck!

I like the improvements you've made and I agree that the skinny neck is better.

I do think that the tear in the jeans is nicer in the secod sprite however, and... I think the guy looks a little young to have grown that beard. He looks like he might be plucking up the courage to buy his first under-age pint.

Hail Sweden!

You're right Big Brother, though I do list Holbien among my influences...

The pencil sketch I drew of him had no nose and no fingers. That's just how I saw the character. Though it did have ears... maybe I should put them back on.

I'll also work on some better bling and post another image.

The design of the character is very nice, but it might not look 'normal' for a few reasons...

1. You've used double pixels - look at the inside of his left arm. The line would look smoother if you changed the corners from:

   @@@@@@
@@            @@@@@@@

to:
     @@@@
@@           @@@@@@@

2. You've used areas of flat colour and areas of smooth shading. Have a go at limitting youself to 3 shades per area of colour - hilight, normal and shadow.

3. The trousers are textured - that will be very hard to animate. Again, try using a few colours. Jeans are tricky, why not give him a hole in the knee, or pockets and cuffs.

4. You've used black outlines- a matter of taste, but many people prefer to use a darker shade of whatever colour they're outlining.

A nice character overall though!

Here's the wee fella with eyebrows. Being the Mr T of monarchs, I also gave him some bling... but I'm not sure about it.

clear up the textures and it's a winner.

The textures are fuzzy because this is a screen-grab from the real-time rendering of Mr H. They're even fuzzier on this picture because of the .gif dithering. They'd be sharp if it was pre-rendered. If there's a way of upping the quality in blender I'd appreciate any tips.

Well, Atomic Kitten are showing signs of wear:

Changes:
1. Made legs longer & Torso shorter.
2. Brought breasts up and made them slightly more modest.
3. Altered top to make shoulders look slightly more feminine,
4. Darkened eyes to remove cross-eye.
5. Made her look like she's making an unimpressed "Hmm" noise.
6. Added possibly mis-judged stomach muscles.
7. Dyed Hair.
#2655
Really? My eyebrows are very pale - to the extent that people think I don't have any. That's why I always look surprised.

Still... I'll get on with giving lil' Henry some of the old brows.

I've been really busy recently but in my free moments I've been messing around with Blender (mainly because I'll do anything if shbazjinkens suggests it often enough).

I've also just played Escape from Monkey Island and wasn't happy with the characters' graphics so I thought I'd attempt a low-poly cartoonish character to see if I could produce something I liked.

I know low-poly 3D characters have no real application in AGS, and this isn't expressely for a game, but I'd appreciate any thoughts you might have all the same.

(Obviously this is just a basic pose. Try to imagine him in a spouse-murdering frenzy - ta.)

This website will tell you the standard format for all kinds of script including screenplay, sit-com and sketch show:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/writersroom/scriptsmart/formats.shtml

And it also offers what seems to be a free plugin for Word that helps you format screenplays:

Gor' bless ya BBC.

I've been forced to cancel my entry thanks to the news that Tom Stoppard (of actually-being-able-to-write fame) worked on Episode III's script. Witness:

I don't think it would really have qualified anyway, but remember: the pen is mightier than the lightsabre.

the hand with the phone is longer than the hand in the pocket

True, but a phone in the hand is worth two in the pocket.

Colect12, you've sorted the biggest problem in your paintover (the afro dissapearing off teh top of the frame), but his eyes are a little intimidating. Try making them light on the outside and dark on the inside, like Largo's example. It's a cliché, but true, that the eyes bring a character to life.
