James, my Grandad's name, is my middle name.

Is Father Christmas governor yet?

Let's give this another try, maybe Darth can come up with a more festive topic...

On the religious headwear issue, I think it's very important to remember that the thought that you don't really need to express your religion outwardly is very much an idea grown out of a western semi-Christian attitude.

The French ruling on outward signs of faith in school is opressive, not liberating. It doesn't create a secular, level-playing-field because it only allows some pupils to express their religion in the manner they choose.

On the topic of muslim women's headwear, I think it could be a terrible mistake to assume that women are commonly forced to wear items of clothing that seem restrictive from a western standpoint.

If we see a women in a skimpy skirt would we assume that her chauvanist boyfriend
forced her into it?

Why is the third in a series so often a shoddy 3D effort...?

I have never heard the word 'fortnight' before

We can all learn something from the newly lengthened Photoshop Contest...
#2688
Since Makri has a strong topic let's see it last for a fortnight then, and we can see where things go from there.
#2689
The answer is in the question, or rather, the question is in the title.

Esseb has suggested that the Photoshop Contest run monthly rather than weekly.
(see here: http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=17811.0)

Would a month be too long for a competition though? Perhaps fortnightly would be better...

The advantages I can think of for a longer contest would be more time to work on entries, more time for entries to come in and longer for people to come up with exciting topics.

Any objections, or should we give it a go?

Interesting ... I'll pose the question in General Discussion.

EDIT: And now I have...

This was a valiant attempt to raise the stakes Synthetique, but you've got to remember that the contest must be fun for people of all levels of ability.

Then again the last one I hosted only had 3 entries, so what do I know?

Looking forward to the next one Makri, I'll lock this once you come up with a topic.

you made this game, I- using a cartridge writer- have made my own game. Why cant I sell it? because of copyright laws.

This is an interesting topic, but I'm afraid I don't understand this. Why can't your game made with a cartridge writer be sold?

And what exactly is a cartridge writer?

And Ali: You've still added 8 letters

It took me several minutes to work out how I'd added the 8 letters in:

GERRYmanDER

It seems I read double-R as one letter. Thanks to Andail for doing what I meant to do, but with less blindingly obvious mistakes.

they use "Explosionated" instead (Explosionaban). It is very weird, and I think there must be similar cases in every country. How happens this?

The US has done one or two things like that to English if I'm not mistaken. "Buglarized" instead of the perfectly functional "burgled" and "normalcy" for "normality".

You couldn't spell 'gerrymander' in Scrabble, given the 7 letter limit.

Witness:

Ã,  Ã,  Ã,  Ã,  Ã,  Ã,  Ã, h
GERRYmanDER
Ã,  Ã,  Ã,  Ã,  Ã,  Ã,  Ã, t

(capitalisation indicates newly added letters)

It seems to me that the best words are ones I never have an excuse to use. To save the Oxford dictionary from collapsing into "Hw 2 txt" by 2020 I suggest we fortify a collection of rarely used but excellent words. My recommendations are:

1. Paraphernalia

2. Smithereens

3. Cockles

4. Leviathan

5. Humbug

Anyone else have favourite words on the brink of extinction?

I think N3TGraph's suggestion is a good one. For a dramatic and atmospheric game you don't have to be whizzing back and forth in time like DOTT or Back to the Future.

Instead of travelling through time to avert something, or to avert the averting of something, why not do what that film did and create a mystery whose answer lies in time travel. The advantage of that would be the lead character would uncover the truth about time travel at the same rate as the player.

I would imagine that would be easier than introducing the player to characters who know all about time travel and its workings.

Now on the nit-picking front:

when they make the calculation, they discover the manual should be about 2000 years old... which is odd ofcourse, because then they never heard of the word camera

They had heard the word!

Admittedly it meant 'room'...

I don't like any of the puzzles that go:

Try

Die

Try

Die

I'm afraid the Space Quest games are particlaurly gulty of that. My least favourite was the hover-rink-race-escape-thing in SQ4. Particularly challenging (i.e. impossible) on Windows XP.

To make myself even more unpopular, I love any Myst-esque puzzles where you have to decode an alphabet or number system or memorize symbols or noises or make a chart...

We need a bloody big warning on the registeration page that says "If you have posted less then ten posts in x weeks/months/whatever your account will be automatically deleted because of bandwith issues." or something...

Maybe long-dormant accounts should be deleted, but I'm not sure sure that compelling members to post frequently would solve the over-popularily problem or the too-many-stupid-or-thoughtless-posts problem.

That will be helpful in future Quant, but my main problem is somehow I've prevented NewRoomEx from working from an inventory script whatever target room I choose.

It seems that my sloppy programming is to blame, if it works for strazer it ought to work for me. I'll just go over what I've done with a fine toothed comb.

Thanks for your help guys.

Hoorah it's back!

Hooroo, the problem is still there.
