Not at all - said notes aren't inventory items.

I would agree that, because of the dynamic manipulation of entries in Discworld Noir's notebook, it is much closer to a typical inventory than its Black Dahlia counterpart and is probably more fun. However, as a collection of ideas rather than objects I'd say that a notebook filled in by the character was an inventory of sorts -certainly closer to an inventory than anything else.

I'm not sure why a collection of ideas should be regarded as particularly distinct from a collection of objects. In Blade Runner none of the inventory items can be manipulated or used in the traditional way because they are records of evidence which help the player to solve puzzles. I don't see that as being far removed from Pearson recording information that helps the player solve the game's mysteries.

Redrum, and I hope I haven't misunderstood you, would you argue that the Kia in Blade Runner wasn't an inventory?

Not the same, but in many respects similar, being a notebook filled with clues and all.

I thought opium first, but a part of me hoped that the show was about guys chasing dragons in the Wacky Races mileu.

Like Raider, the name is enough to catch my interest, but I'd have to know more about the content before I'd watch it.

Yeah, Black Dahlia also had clue-notes like Discworld Noir, but they weren't quite as good. The manipulation of clues in Discworld Noir was a really interesting use of a brain-type inventory. Discworld 1 also had an inventory of skills gained by the Player Character, though it was a little underused.

We could do with a hundred new and imaginative inventories like the kinds you're all talking about here.

It is a great april fools joke in that it is still fooling people 5 months after april. :P

Or a terrible April Fools joke, since they're supposed to stop at lunchtime.

I wonder if it'll still be going next April Fools Day...

Your english is better than any of my foreign languages! Your sentence construction is strong but you slip occasionally into the present tense when the majority of the story is in the past tense

"In Mike's bar sat a man who's so ugly, that even the beer bottle refuses to come near his face"

Could work better as:

"In Mike's bar sat a man who was so ugly, that even the beer bottle was refusing to come near his face"

The descriptive comparisons remind me of Raymond Chandler's style, but I'm afraid I don't understand who Handsome Joel is, or how he could have caused the error.

Great dream, reminds me of Futurama. I once dreamt that an army general told me I had to switch my alarm clock of quickly to save the world from destruction.

I slept in that morning.

I don't believe I've been burned into his subconcious....

How would you know if you'd been burned into someone else's subconcious?

Thanks to sedriss and Scummbuddy for entering. In spite of sedriss' very well chosen Guybrush face and Scumbuddy's extremely entertaining mini-drama I'm going to have to side with very weird guy and...

Declare DM "King of Universe"

Particulary for the text on the bus -very nice. You are the winner! Once you've recovered from the shock, please start a new thread and I'll lock this one/condemn it to the pit of poor topic choices.

I really did enjoy your animation though Scummbuddy, I'd happily watch a sequel.
It's a pity so few people have software like flash, otherwise there could be an AGS theatre competition with stuff like this ever week.

Ah well...

Ahem:

Windows 95
Pentium 200
48 Megs Ram
4mb Video Card
8x CD-ROM
15" Monitor

Oh yeah.

If these were for a game, I'd suggest using film posters from one era specificallt - maybe the 60s based on the look of the building. I think that would create a better atmosphere - at the moment it looks like a film student lives there (I'm a film student, I know this to be true).

There used to be a great tutorial for 3D lucas-style bgs at this address, but it seems to have gone.

Curses.

That is fair Farl, and these Cox & Forkum fellows do at least make Michael Moore look sophisticated, but some of their work is appauling.

For instance this 'Bring it on Allah' tee-shirt. http://thoseshirts.com/sam.html

The intention was to induce 'spluttering impotent outrage' among lefties.

Well, I'm not spluttering.

I suppose the difference is, an extreme left-wing cartoon would be more likely to feature bunnies getting along with one another than its right-wing counterpart.

Critics' Lounge / Re: Which Chapter Screen?

I definately like the first one, but I think the chapter name might have better cadence if it was "The quick and the less physically able".

Are you American by the way, because British people tend to say "not as" rather than "not so". That's completely off-topic, I'm just interested.

Only once? A true HillBilly would probably have seen a cow three or four times at least. Or so goes my reckoning.

Great idea!

My notes:

I feel that the lettering of 'in the maze' is a little to tall to read comfortably, though I understand why you've done it like that for the sake of the animation.

I'd suggest a soft light to account for reflections from the ground, the dark areas look a little too flat.

I would think about higher walls as well, currently they look a tad too easy to climb.

Also, if you wanted to make your file size less Rad Video Tools will make a much smaller avi with few noticeable losses. The tools are free from here...

...and have been used in Broken Sword and Toonstruck.

I'm beginning to think that the word "phrenzy" might have been a poor choice...

I feel it's my duty to say: Worst Photoshop Phriday Ever!

Nice entries by the way Darth, you know I'm leaning towards picking you as a winner, unless the eponymous phrenzy happens in the next two days.

And that seems unlikely.

I've just started playing my first ever RPG: Ultima Underworld (1992). I'm quite enjoying it, but it's the strong story and puzzle based elements that I like. The openness is quite novel for me but I'm not sure I'd want every game I play to be like that. I'm not sure how a Dungeons & Dragons-like RPG could really build to a dramatic ending, with every element of the plot being so flexible.

But I haven't played any modern RPGs. Are they less D&D?

Critics' Lounge / Re: Caveman-hooker?
Sun 19/09/2004 16:32:34
These characters look great and they remind me of Quentin Blake's work. I'd love to see more in this style.

If they are supposed to be cavemen though, I think you should make the colours of the clothes variants on khaki and tan - certainly not blue. The ony other point I'd make is that the tubby sprite seems to be leaning backwards - if there's a wall behind him that's fine, otherwise try tweaking it so that the head is above the feet.

The UN is nice in theory, but in practice is a joke.

Your argument begs the question. The UN was proven ineffectual, or "a joke" because the US disregarded it in the run-up to war. You argue that the US disregarded it because it was "a joke".

And you might want to give up on this line of argument:

Also, come on guys, it's the French.

It might work with other bigoted, always-right-republicans. But you're going to have to try harder when dealing with people who think.Ã,  ;)
