I think this is a great idea, but you probably have to know quite bit about linguistics to create a convincing style of writing/speech. Look to the work of linguist authors like Anthony Burgess (A Clockwork Orange) and *shudder* Tolkien.

Tolkien spelled it "dwarves" when the usual spelling is "dwarfs".

Is 'dwarfs' really the usual spelling? I've never seen it, just like I've never seen 'knifes'.

A Grim reaper suit

In Discworld II you have to aquire a Sythe and a black cloak for the purposes of reaping. I'm sure that counts.

Actually, can you carry Botox?

I don't like to use smilies, but Flippy's designs are fun. The Klansman could double for a ghost.

Are AGS smilies Roger? I thought they just had a tan for some reason.

And the winner is...

DGMacphee

With Dave Gilbert as a close second - nice assonance.

I've got to say, I was impressed with the shadows in Privateer Puddin's entry, but have you thought of the practicalities of a sitcom starring, Guybrush, Guybrush, LeChuck, LeChuck, Wally and Wally?

I think not.

Next then, a DGMacphee hosted Photoshop. There's a novelty.

You don't make a scene dark and noir-ish by taking out all the light. Mobster films were shot on 16mm with a small number of lamps - the result was high contrast black and white.

Small areas of light are the way to go, though not quite as small as you've used. I'll try a quick paintover to show what I mean...

This was VERY quick, but I hope it illustrates my point.  For speed I've used gradients - not necessarily wise.

Excellent character - is he meant to be a modern day mobster?

I don't think it would be fair to outlaw vector-drawn sprites -

Surely I'd be allowed to enter this fella even though he was created in a 3D app:

(Except that I made it a couple of weeks ago, its too big and it's not very good)

The Saint's sprite is great, but the Sprite Jams have seen many equally good pixel-pushings. It's not as if the art is dying out on the forum, is it?

I have to disagree with Mr Odd, I preper the sky in the first picture. It's too close to cyan/turqouise in the update - The sky is blue and very rarely blue-green.

The first pic looks like an illustration, it's stylised and dynamic, so there isn't a problem having an outline round the sun. It looks terrific. It's impossible really without making the sun white to make it look bright and not like a raw egg yolk.

I say stick with a kind of cut-out style - your influence was South Park after all, what does it matter if the sky looks flat?

The roof in your most recent pic does look better though!

Congratulations!

I insist that you refer to this as the Italian Job.

I laughed for an hour at "the patented Stobbart stick-towel" in BS1.

Eggie's right the ocasional sharp line in a serious game will be more memorably funny than a game stuffed with puns and sarcasm (like Simon the Sorceror).

I must join the legion of people singing your praises - that's fantastic! But I'm not really desperate to see it in colour. It reminds my of film noir, I'd love to see a B/W detective game in that style.

Discworld 1 is a very good game, marred with severe problems that get worse as the game goes on. I just finished replaying it yesterday and to some extent it was more fuss than it was worth. If you do buy a second hand copy, make sure its the most recent version the earliest (mine) has a gigantic bug at the end of the game.

I think Discworld 2 is great though, but far more object-oriented than Noir.

Thanks for posting all the pictures, even though I'm sure Darth must just have scanned a few postcards. I wish I had a digital camera so I could post a photo too.

DragonRose, you have a bunny in your garden! My girlfriend would be so so envious. I'm a little worried about this though:

I can see my Dad's new blue truck (Ram 2500)

I don't think you should Ram any people with it, never mind 2500.

What is a Photoshop Phriday?

Photoshopping isn't drawing a completely new image -- It's editing images to create a new image, such as editing one image or combining several images.

Also, you don't have to specifically use Photoshop -- Paint Shop Pro, MSPaint, or any other programs can be used.

See this link:

And for other examples, see here:

The two above websites should give a fair idea of what is involved.

Ahem...

This week's topic is Sit-coms

I want to see adventure game characters starring in their own situation comedies, or making guest appearances in real shows.

Like this but less hastily thrown together:

EDIT: Forgot to put a date ... the last day is the 9th.

DG handed the Photoshop Phridays over to me and I think it's fair to let OsUltimo choose. He may not have given a real topic, but people have made an effort with entries and I hope Ultimo will take the opportunity to set the challenge back on track by making a good choice.

If Ultimo doesn't want to pick a winner I will, or anyone who pays me to let them (at a very reasonable price AGA).

Farlander's post about international differences got me thinking... What kind of deeply dull or wonderful things are on AGSer's doorsteps across the globe?

If I lean out of my bedroom window I can see York Minster, the largest gothic cathedral in Northern Europe. I can also see a raiway station, a reminder of York's importance in years gone by.

I'd like to know what you can see from your window (bedroom or otherwise).

That's what's great about Michael Moore! He embodies everything associated with the US.

That's what makes it hard to say he hates America - He's a chubby, baseball cap wearing, beer drinking blue collar joe.

I used to have long hair but I it never grew long enough so I had duck tails (when your hair curls at the end so as to stick out from the side of your neck).

I used to have exactly the same thing but I've never heard a name for them! My dad would never let me grow my hair past that length, so I was stuck with duck tails for years.

Definitely.

There's a moment of: "Oh Lord, the demons of my past have finally caught up with me!"

Then you realise it's hair.

The most noteable and best thing about England, that as far as I know has yet to be mentioned, is...

You all speak our language!

This is great news for gentle liberal types like me who want to spread the word of peace globally, and even better news for the aforementioned sunburned thugs who want to buy booze on holiday without using a phrase book.

I'm a longhair, in fact a kid called me that yesterday. I'm also in the "it's not a beard I'm just too lazy industrious to shave" category.

As far as a common adventure gamer trait goes, my adventure-game-playing-girlfriend has long hair too. No beard though, so's you know.
