Perhaps there could be a greater bond than we realise in the relationship between puzzles, background, and meaning in games?

Ain't that the truth?

One of the best things in a game is when you realise the purpose of the places you're visiting. I'm a myst lover, and in playing the games just by observing the backgrounds, If you look carefully enough, you can work out so much of the story (and solve one of the puzzles in Riven).

One of the worst things is an out of place puzzle or obstacle, I mean how many ancient temples and bank vaults are locked with slide-picture-puzzles?

Edit: Oh and, I don't think Barcik's shot of Johnny Depp and Benicio Del Toro is an extreme zoom. The distorted perspective comes from having the camera very close to the subject. If it were an extreme zoom, then Toro's head would be about the same size as Depp's and would be further out of focus.

See, I can be both boring and irrelevant.

BLADE RUNNER was a brilliant game, but because it told a different story to the movie. They took the film's locations and styles and put together a story which was mostly original (though they cleverly adapted some scenes from the book Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep that hadn't been in the film). They also made best use of the possibilities of gaming by making multiple endings that genuinely worked with the story (not like Ripper).

Danny Wallace is great, he co-wrote the Dave Gorman Collection with Dave Gorman, and he was involved in Dave Gorman's Important Astrology Experiment.

Have you seen the shows/read the books of any of the Dave Gorman stuff?

This isn't for a game in particular I've just been experimenting:

My rendering software is very poor and it isn't really capable of building a whole room without causing errors. What would people think of a game made up of bits and pieces of images like this one, in the vein of the Blue Ice?

I'm just musing, so I'd be pleased to hear comment and criticism.

Thanks.

P.S. the tree isn't meant to be gnarly in the surfer way, just in the tree way.

EDIT: You're right about the top of the bark DM I think I'll change that a bit.

Because this was just a quick job I used photos I'd taken for the texture of the bark and ground, normally I'd have drawn them myself.

Also it was rendered in Visual Reality, the crAzy Grandma of Simply 3d (It's no where near as good as Maya) but I did tweak the grass a little in Corel Photopaint.

I don't consider myself a proper member of the AGS community and won't until I finish the game I'm making, and maybe have some people play it.

All the same I want to say that most people on the forum are friendly, thoughtful, funny and helpful, or at least one of those four things. There are a few unpleasant new people and a few old people who are unpleasant to them.

That's the way it goes, most of the AGS community is as fuzzy as the underbelly of a bush-baby.

Thankyou, and goodnight.

This is so good! I showed it to my girlfriend who had this to say:

my name is rachel-anne. wow! that little game was so sweet. the music was particularly effective. its nice that people spend their time doing something so lovely, (it made my cry) you rock igor!

So there you have it, rachel-anne liked it. What greater accolade can there be for an artist?

oh and just to clarify : this isnt a troll or a flame if you can't figure it out yourself  :-\

If this isn't a troll OR a flame, how do I get the magic axe from the enchanted laundry?

And also AGS is free! The last thing I got for free was a cold, though I admit that was working on Christmas day. You know what they say: Don't look a gift horse in the easter egg.

If the movie does well they'll probably release a game anyway and it'll have like 30 levels of non-stop action, with fifteen weapons from Lister's socks to super-bazookoids and ther'll be GELFs coming from every direction and you've got to shoot them and aslo jump over like really big gaps...

So my answer is yes.

I'm not a great lover of fan games, but somehow I think Red Dwarf could work really well.

*Please* include a sequence where you get to use the VR console, and play Streets of Laredo.

You can use smooth gradients in your pictures, but you have to remember the shape of the objects you are lighting. The glow you added to your lamp was a flat circle which doesn't look right. If you mask off only the part of a wall you wnat to light, you can use a gradient from light to dark to shade it accurately. Be careful though, gradients only really work for flat, cylindrical or spherical objects. Irregular shapes you must manually shade or they will appear two-dimensional.

I've painted over certain parts of your image to show what I mean:

I haven't added shadows, but you can use a mask for that too.

Dizzy on the ZX spectrum instilled in my a lifelong fear of ANYTHING that moves. To this day, if I get within the vicinity of a bird, my hands and feet fly off while my body recedes into the distance.

If you're going for realism, shouldn't the walk cycle look like this?

BBC Micro Computer!

Cower before its 8 colours of fury!

Witness the Yellow, Cyan and Magenta of terror!

And plead for mercy before its two - count them, two - font sizes.

My other computer has windows 95.

I think it would be easier for people to help you if you posted some pictures of katrina or of the style of drawing you need, because not everyone is familiar with the games.
I've never played the Quest for Glory games, but I drew a quick sketch based on this image from your site.

Hi, I thought anyone trying to come up with a plot for a game might be helped by this...

About 70 years ago a Russian called Vladimir Propp read a load of fairy tales. He put together a list of characters (or spheres) and events (or functions) which usually appeared in the stories. They are virtually a template for a fantasy adventure game, and can be used to describe stories like Cinderella and even Star Wars.

Characters:
Hero/Victim, Villain, Donor, Helper, Princess, Princess's Father, False-Hero

Events:
1.   A member of the family leaves home.
2.   A prohibition or rule is imposed on the hero.
3.   This prohibition is broken.
4.   The villain makes an attempt at reconnaissance.
5.   The villain learns something about his victim.
6.   The villain tries to deceive the victim to get possession of him or his belongings.
7.    The victim unknowingly helps the villain by being deceived or influenced by the villain.
8.   The villain harms a member of the family
8a.           A member of the family lacks or desires something.
9.   This lack or misfortune is made known; the hero is given a request or command and he goes or is sent on a mission / quest.
10.   The seeker (or the hero) plans action against the villain.
11.   The hero leaves home.
12.   The hero is tested, attacked, interrogated and as a result receives either a magical agent or helper.
13.   The hero reacts to the actions of the future donor.
14.   The hero uses the magical agent.
15.   The hero is transferred to the general location of the object of his mission / quest.
16.   The hero and villain join in direct combat.
17.   The hero is branded.
18.   The villain is defeated.
19.   The initial misfortune or lack is set right.
20.   The hero returns.
21.   The hero is pursued.
22.   The hero is rescued from pursuit.
23.   The hero arrives home or elsewhere and is not recognised.
24.   A false hero makes false claims.
25.   A difficult task is set for the hero (test by fire, drink, riddle or test of strength)
26.   The task is accomplished.
27.   The hero is recognised.
28.   The false hero is transformed.
29.   The villain is punished.
30.   The hero is married and crowned.

All you need to do to write a fantasy, sci-fi or adventure game using this structure is pick out the numbers you like the sound of and add in the "use-magic-dust-with-heavy-lock" bits.

If this is useful or interesting, please let me know. If it's boring, please tell me and I'll stop writing posts about Russian Structuralists.

One day I tried to draw a crime-solvin' film noir goblin. I did, and he should be sitting to the left of this message.
