Yay! Except your usual avatar guy doesn't look too happy about the new guy...

I promise I will try to finish the game soon. Ish.

So handsome!

Glad to hear you're okay. It's funny, it almost seems selfish to be worried about friends after attacks like these.

I would like to see the whole of ISIS dumped on an island somewhere with all their guns and ammo and only one cache of food and water hidden somewhere. And there's only enough for three people. See how their solidarity holds up then...

If you would like to see the 1941 version of this, watch the underrated British war film "49th Parrallel" aka "The Invaders". It was a film designed to encourage US support for joining the second world war, but the plot is quite unusual. A German submarine founders off the coast of Canada (currently in the war) and a small troop of Nazi soldiers have to make their way through Canada to the USA for sanctuary. What is remarkable about the film is that the thing which tears the soldiers apart is the cancer of Nazi philosophy. Those obsessed with a perverse notion of 'purity' eventually turn on each another.

I find it somewhat reassuring to think that these fanatical, murderous cults are ultimately self destructive. Powell & Pressburger were also remarkable in that their war films always made a clear distinction between a German and a Nazi. I think that's so important, at a time when our newspapers and politicians are deliberately conflating IS terrorists and refugees fleeing IS terror.

The Tween module will give great results, but if you want smoother camera movement in general then you could also try my Smooth Scrolling and Parallax Module: http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=33142.msg636501798#msg636501798

You can create pans and more complex camera moves by directing the camera to an invisible character (targetCharacter = cDummy;).

Sorry I can't be more help!

As mentioned in the post above, you'll have to give the walking animations 2 or more frames to see diagonal movement. This is an AGS thing, not an issue with this script. If you've already done this, then I'm not sure what the problem could be. As I said there are obvious glitches with the script. Feel free to use and adapt it as necessary, but I'm afraid at the moment I don't have time to offer proper support for it.

I can see why a lot of people are ready to blame this crisis on spendthrift, no-account Greeks and venal Greek politicians (and they do exist, of course). But the same centrist consensus in the UK blames our economic woes on benefits scroungers, EU immigrants and lazy, lazy disabled people. I'm not saying that Greece's social problems don't play a role in the debt crisis, or that the situation in Greece isn't more extreme. But, I think looking at the world through the prism of neo-classical economics gives us a perspective dramatically skewed in favour of the very wealthy.

I know this is a simplistic take on the Greek/Eurozone crisis, but I think the Young Turks have something interesting to say about the way debt has been shifted out of the private sector:

I think we should remember that some of these IS 'fighters' are idealistic teenagers who have been manipulated and lied to about what fighting for their religion will mean. (Of course, that's NOTHING like how we recruit teenagers from poor backgrounds for the army.)

I'm British, and we favour the approach of putting them in the stocks and parading them around the village. I'm not sure that's the best way to effect the peaceful integration of disenfranchised Muslim youth.

AGS's own Trapezoid made this choose-your-own-song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tUIu6_eTkjY

I can't remember if it's racy though...

Check this out..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GTSzHmHnR78&feature=youtube_gdata_player

This video includes 3D model analysis carried out by Richard D Hall. Various videos showing the plane flight path and impact, many filmed by amateurs, were superimposed onto the 3D model and are all consistent with available positioning data from civilian radar. It appears that the videos were not faked, however since planes ultimately can't penetrate a building like Wile E. Coyote through a pavement, the only explanation is that the planes existed as an illusion.

I didn't watch the whole video (they are all too long), but I did watch the carefully reconstructed 3D representations of the second plane striking.

I don't want to have a go specifically at you, monkey242. But I find it extraordinary that anyone could watch video after video of a plane hitting a building, and listen to the screams of the onlookers, and draw the conclusion that no planes hit that building.

None of us have an innate, gut sense about what happens when planes fly into buildings. And our models are not always correct (c.f. the unsinkable ship of 2012, the uncrashable stock market of 2008).

If I recall correctly,  that jerkiness is inevitable unless you use DX9.

I just want to say how pleased I am that the AGS forums respond so rationally to this kind of conspiracy theory. But I'm also really pleased that the fans of Dr. Wood are being so nice about people challenging them. I'm just impressed by how civilised this all is so far.

CONJECTURE: The weapon doesn't exist.

By calling that conjecture, you're asking for it to be backed up with facts, but that's impossible. It's hard to prove a negative, just like Bertrand Russell can't prove there isn't a teapot orbiting the sun between Earth and Mars. The onus isn't on someone else to prove that a hitherto unknown energy beam doesn't exist.

Religions and conspiracy theories like to tie unrelated, unexplained phenomena together into a reassuring narrative that suggests someone is in charge. As Alan Moore puts it:

Quote from: Alan Moore"The main thing that I learned about conspiracy theory is that conspiracy theorists actually believe in a conspiracy because that is more comforting. The truth of the world is that it is chaotic. The truth is, that it is not the Jewish banking conspiracy or the grey aliens or the 12 foot reptiloids from another dimension that are in control. The truth is more frightening, nobody is in control. The world is rudderless."

I'm very grateful to the members who designed and maintain the site, but that doesn't mean it couldn't be better. We shouldn't say, "but we just updated the site several years ago!" The thing about updating is you have to keep doing it.

The site would benefit from being focused on new users. Not just developers (who may not care about aesthetics, though I suspect they do) but also artists, writers, voice actors, composers and other superficial people like me. I think the same should apply to the engine and we ought to replace the default Roger/interface with something less ugly.

For an object lesson, look at Blender3D. An incredibly powerful open source tool which is GRADUALLY becoming more user friendly. But by default you still have to right-click to select objects. Why? Because that's the way it's always been!

It's silly because old users can adapt easily. New designs should be geared towards new users. I enjoyed this discussion last time around, and I'm going to end by say the same thing. I hate Larry Vales in the banner! Get rid of him!

There it is! Well discovered. There are some obvious problems with the calculations... good luck! Also, make sure to give all the Views 2 frames to get the diagonal loops to appear when walking.

I've searched, but I can't find the script I wrote several years ago.

From memory, this is how it worked:

  • On player click, get the player position and mouse position.
  • You can then get the difference between the X and Y values, say X= 100 and Y=-80 (if the player clicked up-right from the player.
  • Then you can use maths to work out the angle. Forgive me for not remembering the trigonometry. In this case it's 51 degrees up-right if facing right = 0/360 degrees.
  • Then you can choose the correct one of a number of pre-animated rotations to turn the character to face up-right from their current view.
  • Then make the character walk to the original click position

Point 4 has to be a blocking animation, which is one of the things that meant my script was never very elegant.

Try using lighting to draw attention to the centre of the image / front of the house. Currently the lighting makes my attention drift off into the top corner, just because the roof is bright.

Here's an incredibly rough mockup, just to show how you can draw attention to the important parts of the scene:

Critics' Lounge / Re: Font critic in text

6 is the only one I can read comfortably, but it's not a particularly attractive font. 3 is harder to read, but more pleasing to look at.

If I were you I'd consider using a bold, decorative font title only (Most of these would be suitable). Then use a use a less striking, but eminently readable font for the body of the text. Here are some conventional options: http://blog.solopress.com/inspiration/typography/top-5-most-popular-fonts-for-printing/
