General Discussion / Re: Personal questions :)
Sun 29/01/2006 03:00:52
My son is 18 months old and my daughter is 8. She has no idea about our lifestyle. And until we have the "talk" or until she figures it out on her own, then we'll explain it to her. However she is fully aware of what "gay" and "lesbians" are. It's hard not too this close to Seattle, and gay, lesbian, and homosexual are floated on the evening news and talk shows.

It's a personal decision, hell my wife approached me with this, and I damn near choked to death on my subway sandwich (I was midswallow when she told me). I just wish people would be open minded enough to say "While I don't agree with it, I'll accept your choices."

Hrm... No pipes and I hate turtlenecks... and actually I do look similar to my Avi, except for the glowing eyes part... that was a slight embelishment ;D

Yes jfrizyb, I shall, and the evil group of censors trying to destroy me!!!! i wil wen dis battel! :D

Holy Cow look what I started...Ã,  ::)

And Rhape's reaction is EXACTLY why this topic is hard to approach people about here in the states, as most the populus react in that way. I've been threatened online, been slapped, in all of the attempts to talk to an individual on this subject only 3 reacted without anger (and 1 was because she was too young but she was interested) of the other two one was married, and the other just "didn't swing that way".

How the last 3 reacted is the mature mindset I'm hoping exists where I am headed, I know in Germany it happened quite often. I just don't see why people have to react so violently, Rhape seems the type of person that if (assuming rhape is male) another male hit on him he would get upset and possibly violent. I've had that happen a few times and each time it's nothing more than while flattering, not my thing.

And I wasn't asking if they accept having an affair, the question was (in more words), "Can you approach someone in the streets in the UK and talk to them in an effort (if chemistry is there) to make an interpersonal connection."

I did my best to be discrete on the full extent of my question, so much as to be enigmatic, so when I gave more hints as to what exactly I was asking I suddenly get attacked for trying to corrupt the youth.

And Rhape last I checked this was the general discussion forum, in which one can bring up any topic that is not covered in the other forums. This thread applies. This is one of the few forums that I know of that has a high concentration of European and more importantly UK'ers. Most of my other message boards have only a handfull (that I know of).

And really, he must have not been on these forums near as long as I have because there have been far worse topics on this board.

If anything it was quite amusing, however I do like to see that the acceptance list is quite a bit larger than the "Back to the depths of hell you demon!" crowd.

Oh and this is for Pesty "ME AND MY OLD LADY WANT TO HAVE SEX WITH PEOPLE! TELL THE CHILDREN!".

Well, see from what I have been reading, you are quite a bit more free to express your alternate lifestyle. Here you are liable to get slapped or publicly embarassed since, generally speaking, that sort of behavior is frowned upon by my society.

My only Euro experience before now is Germany, and you could be much more expressive about such things. Asking a female if shw would be interested in such a meeting would be turned down as if you just asked about yourself, they didn't think twice or look down on you for what you did.

Generally, the internet route is what we have to do here, as the places to post about such matters people are looking for such things to begin with, so I wasn't so much concerned about the internet side, as I expected that. This is more concerned about the real life meeting type things.

The biggest obsticle to us is the fact that we have children, which here is usually a deal breaker here. I'm hoping there are some more open minded people out there.

Closest bigger city to where we will be located is Huntingdon in Cambrigeshire, so I'm guessing we will be in Cambrigeshire as well. Which is about an hour away from London (northward).

I've been doing some searches here and there, just nothing largely serious since I'll be computerless as of the end of this week, but I'm just trying to avoid any "international incidence" if you will :).

Thanks for the serious replies I need to get all my questions in before my computer goes poof on a moving truck.

Well the personal part isn't what I want the PM about, the part I asked about is the part that I am sure I can post here....

I ask this because you can do this in the US, in Germany you don't walk up to strangers on the street since they value their privacy, however in a club (or just outside getting some air) is fine. Although there the girl is most likely going to talk to you first, in my experience anyway.

When I mean on the street, it doesn't nessicerily mean walking around out in public, it's talking to any female you don't know.

DonB:
So I'm sick because I'm interested in what is cultrully accepted in a society that I am alien to, so I do not embarass myself or any individual of that culture? I'd like to think smart enough to ask the question before I do so.

CJ: Thats what I was looking for, seems trying to do so may be asking for a pepperspray eyewash, as for the second scenerio, I always look for the red lights just to be sure ;).

While I do appreciate the commentary, I don't ask these questions to be cute or funny, these are things that I and my wife want to know. That last sentence might clue you in on the alternate relationship part. So, again, the question is still open I'd like more opinions, just none on how sick I am, or if what I'm asking is "right" or "wrong", I'm asking is is generally socially acceptable to talk to an unaccompanied (because I'm certain if a girl is walking around with any male you should assume that is her significant other, and should not be approached for any reason except maybe fore directions) female. I would like you to stick to the realm of the question.

Thanks again.

General Discussion / Personal questions :)

Ok, I've been absent again, but if you remember I'm moving again, this time to the UK... been really busy.

I have some questions kinda personal in nature, however to be sure I don't break any forum rules I'd like someone that lives in the UK to PM me. Not personal as I'm afraid to share it, but it may have some adult themes that may not be suitable for all audiences :). (wink, wink, nudge, nudge, say no more) It revolves around alternate relationships.

In the US you can, if you have the nerve, walk up to a random girl on the street, after making eye contact, or even just if you find her attractive, and start talking to her, attempting to get a phone number or what have you. Does it work the same in the UK? I would assume it would, but it may be different.

Like I said, there are more questions, but they revolve around the first part of this post.

Also, I'ld like to thank all of the UK folks that have helped me out already and answered the questions I have had to this point. With my move only a month away it's eased my mind and gave me an idea of what to expect.

So, please, if you would PM me so I can ask my questions :). The reason I ask here is one of the few message boards I frequent that has a high concentration of UK people.

Thanks again.

See if you can work in a line where you look for a bluecup or something, or drink from only blue cups... or something blue cup releated...

Maybe kick a blue cup... that would be cool...

And the line, I didn't want to break it, but Alynn made me!

Well my guess is that we probably have to see the interaction code for look... since that looks like pregen with no changes....

At least at this point...

The picture on the wall aint so good...

BRILLIANT!!! How did I not see that, wow Krysis, you have enlightened me beyond anything I could ever imagine. Thank You so much!!!1one!!1!

Hrm... so Steve, you think I should raise the top of the dresser some and have like half the 3rd drawer showing? There are four levels of drawers (7 total, the bottom one is a single drawer) so I thought it looked OK since the POV is someone standing about 5 feet or so from the dresser and wall looking directly ahead, so the dresser does fade out of view.
#369
Ok update... Using the X worked perfectly... now I just wonder if the ceiling wall line is too high... but I'll just deal with it for now.

The real fun part will be animating the drawer objects that open... sheesh.

Anyway.... there ya go.
#370
Thats not the bottom of the wall, the black area is where the GUI sits, therefore there is no reason to draw anything down there. That dresser has more to it, just as the wall continues in the non viewable area.

Added a border line, and a shadow under the picture to help facilitate that it is above the wall..

Anything else?

Critics' Lounge / Wire frame C&C (perspective)
Sat 12/11/2005 07:14:37
Ok, doing as I usually do, and building a wire frame of the room before I actually create it I came up with this. My main concern isÃ,  the drawers making sure they are in perspective... since they are technically the same size... I've always had issues with things that are supposed to be the same, and makeing them realistically smaller as you get farther from the POV. So anyway, advice would be appreciated.

I will be living near Huntingdon, I don't have a nailed down address, as I may be living on one of the RAF's in that area.

So I've been looking over different companies, and I was mostly disappointed with the abysmal 2mb DSL speeds, with limited monthly usage,  for the same price I'm paying now for 6MB cable speeds, with unlimited usage... But then I found a cable broadband, which would have been nice had it not been for the 3 pense a minute charge for using it (for me about 1296 pounds a month, sheesh).

So what do you use for your phone/TV/internet needs? I want to make sure I make a smart informed decision when I get there.
#375
Ok updated again... this time with other stuff that would eventually end up in there... this time the whole thing has grain on it.

And Steve most paneling I know of has different widths, in fact that's exactly what the fake wood paneling looked like in the room I grew up in (except my room had slightly better resolution).

Critics' Lounge / Suggestion for wood panels
Tue 08/11/2005 17:50:22
So I'm working on a room background, where the walls are wood paneling... and I started to do wood grain... but to make it takes a long time per panel...

Is it really needed though... as you can see its only the first few panels on the left the rest is flat... Just wanted opinions on should I add the wood paneling or just don't worry about it.

And don't worry about the black, that's actually where the GUI sits. So anyway

This suggestion came to me when trying to map the arrow keys to the gui arrow keys for my game, which is in first person view.

Being OO as I am I tried this first

Code: ags

if (gUpbutton.Visible == true && keycode == 372){
    gUpbutton.Controls[0].AsButton.Click();
  }

Which of course doesn't work, because Click doesn't exist. I can work around it by calling

ButtonUp_Click(gUpbutton.Controls[0], eMouseLeft);

EDIT: It seems I'll have to adjust where my functions lie because the ButtonUp_Click function is after the on key press function... which is really a pain so the button.click is still my best bet :)

Now... we could add something like Click(int mouseButton) just so the correct mouse button is passed, but thats for you to decide.

I'm sure other interesting things could be come up with for other gui controls, but I can't think of any off the top of my head right now...

Thanks :)

Getting reaquainted with AGS, I made myself a GUI which has the mode button bar on bottom, and the inventory on the left side, and to make it nice and pretty put a border around the area where the action takes place. This gui is full screen.

Well because my GUI is clickable, I can't interact with the hotspots that are under it, even though the GUI is designed to have the viewable part of the room visable.

There are 2 work arounds, one which won't work for what I need, which is to change the clickablity in repeat_ex depending on the xy coords of the mouse. However due to how I have things set up, that doesn't work because if you can move the view downwards, when you move the mouse over that part it changes the mode from what you want to the move down mode...

The second is more obvious and that is to make 4 seperate GUI's.

The second one will work better than my first work around, however, it really seems pointless to create 4 gui's when I only really need one. And thus my suggestion.

Would it be possible to let something like a mask to be imported to create a "clickable area" for a gui, or something similar.

Hints & Tips / Re: 7Days a skeptic

Okay... I had to find here how to get him to come outside, so my question is, if you already went outside expecting him to follow you, then read how to do it, how long do you have to wait?

I came back inside from the top of the ship, closed the outside hatch and waited... but nothing is happening... do I have to go outside the airlock and do that whole sequence over or what?

Thanks...

The biggest thing I hate about the community (and remember I've been part of it for over 5 years) is the type of people it draws... Since the RM is usually pretty easy to use, any 10 year old with internet access can get a hold of it. And it's usually out of laziness they rip or use the RTP.

However, these people are dubbed n00bs for their use of the RTP, people will not even play a game if they find it uses the RTP, it could be the best game ever put out by a user, but if it's RTP it is then crap and must be destroyed.

Generally, it is an engine that works best when you have multiple people working on it, for music, graphics, and so on. It's generally long work making a sprite sheet, or even worse a tile set... hundreds of 16X16 (or in XP 32X32) tiles take a very long time, especially when you need them to tile, but not look like they tile.

So basically, it is a younger community than AGS, and therefore is less tolerant of less than perfection. While people here appreciate the story and gameplay aspects, there they expect perfect graphics, perfect stories, and perfect music. Here if it is playable, and altogether fun, it is accepted, and even if it needs improvement, the more mature userbase here will give suggestions of HOW to make it better, not just
Code: ags
OMG U N00B STFU RTFM!!!
(coded to preserve the leet.

When I first started in the community, I was making an game using nothing but the RTP, just to prove an excellent game could be made using it. All that I trusted that read my script (135 page word doc) loved it, when I showed off my maps, people commented on how I was using the RTP properly. Unfortunately it never was released due to a HDD wipe I had to do, due to a nasty little virus I picked up somewhere. I had a chance to hopefully change the community for the better, but that fell through.

I'm more of a fringe memeber now... I still patrol the forums of the site to keep the jerks in line, and I'm always on the IRC channel, mostly because I like the people. I bought the legal english RMXP most likely, I'll make a game in it... in fact I already have one started, but as I said, until I get into ruby and have time to learn, I will most likely just go with the defaults... which the community will hate... but hell, I'm 28 I have 3 kids... what is a 12 year old going to say to me to make me feel bad about myself?
