Oddly enough I see this kind of thing all the time... and the general thing is... its ALWAYS the younger people that have problems with it... my kid is no different (although she is only 6)...

from the other point of view though...

Imagine putting you heart and soul into something... looking at it... revising it... revising it again... spending hours upon hours until you think it's perfect... and you want to put up something you are so proud of... just so someone to say,

"Yeah it's good, but if you change this and this and this, it will be better." In a way you told this person "No matter how much time and energy you put into this, it's not good enough for me." Even though you may not have meant it that way...

Not all of us have inate graphical abilities... not all of us have inate abilities to write a good story, dialog, plot, or anything... so this is my idea...

1) If you post here expect to be critiqued... but also understand that these critiques are not to put you down, they are there to try to help you improve on your style. If you do not like these critiques do not post. Bottom line, if you can't let it roll off your back like water off a duck... then just save everyone the trouble...

2) Respect others... remember that some of them worked long and hard... even if you think their work is uber bad... they may have spent DAYS to get it looking THAT good... we aren't all diVinci... some of us don't have the drawing talent past stickmen, and even those are of dubious style. And please make sure it is CONSTRUCTIVE... Telling someone that their pic looks like it was drawn by a right handed chimp using its left foot... well you get the point...

So in the end... Post and expect critiques, critique, but remember we don't all have uber skill levels in artwork...

And I guess that's it :P

since you want them global to the room you can just make more variables to use... if you want to just have one variable, you can make it an array

Code: ags
int my_counter[x]; //Where x is the number of vars you need

Then access them by

Code: ags
if (my_counter[0]<1)

EDIT stupid Yabb code didn't like me using braces :(

character[ID].room = roomNumber;

There you go... just make sure the character in question is not moving before you do it... You can even do a custom function

NPCNewRoomEx(int id, int room, int x, int y) {
     StopMoving(id);
     character[id].x = x;
     character[id].y = y;
     character[id].room = room;
}

You can do the same thing for NPCNewRoom just omit the things for the x and y positions of the character...

I agree with your take on Beyond Good and Evil... I just bought it 2 days ago... and played it non stop... Already beat it... and still wanna play it again... Yes the violence was there, but in about 85% of the situations, you can forgo fighting and just sneak by the guards...

Kya is another game by eden and atari... Violence is there, but you can be smart about it, and make them fight each other (by making one think the other is hitting him while he isn't looking) Games where there is a violent, and a more thinking smarter way to go about it always ticked my fancy...

Anyway, they are few and far between, but there sure are some gems out there... and most the time I seem to find them in the bargin bin...

You know how I got over not being able to talk to women? I got married... now I have no problems talking to females at all... Probably because it doesn't matter to me if I get them or not... I'm still going home with someone...

BTW before you flame me, the wife and I travel in those circles... so it's perfectly fine (well you make your own moral judgements it's perfectly fine in our relationship)

Java is NOT a scripting language... Java is a PROGRAMING LANGUAGE... it happens to have a Java Scripting language that is close but fundementally different from Java....

But tongue, eyelid, lip, TEMPLE, genital, nipple, and all other peircings are not known for their pleasurable sensations, are not often adorned with quality jewelry, and are fairly dangerous.  Why bother?
Hey, its not a tattoo!  lol ;)

Ok... nipple and genital... let me tell you my wife would beg to differ on those two... I personally being military can't get any piercings... but I plan on getting my ears done again when I'm out... I'm not sure about anywhere else....

And Booo to you for putting down tatoos.... Me love my art!!!!

Couldn't you just create an array of ints and once an item is put there set the value to 1, then before you place the next object, see if the corrisponding hotspot already has an object on it if not pick a new random number... just code off the top of my head but...

int objPlaced[8];
int counter;
int ran;

while (counter < 7) {
   ran = Random(7);  //pick a random number
   if (objPlaced[ran]==0) { //if the object hasn't been placed yet place it
      //Placement of object code here
      objPlaced[ran] = 1;
  }
   else {  //if the object has been placed
      while (objPlaced[ran]==1){ //Until you find a unused number loop
         ran = Random(7);
         if (objPlaced[ran] == 0){
         //Place object
         objPlaced[ran] = 1;
      }
   }
   counter++;
}

Ok not tested... maybe needs to be tweeked some... but like I said off the top of my head with not much thought to it.

With graphics like those, a character sprite may look out of place... At least in my opinion, with all those nice closeups and things first person is the way to go... it so reminds me of Myst (Yeah in retrospect Myst wasn't super great or anything, but when i first played it I was damn mesmerized by it)

I've been told that there are pirated music, movies and software sold on-base (American Military bases) in Iraq and elsewhere. That is supposed to be legally American soil (even if temporary), but it seems like many foreign places have uninhibited pirating (even if the foreign place is American). Probably because of the reason you mentioned and I hinted at, poverty. Just look how much lower the number is in North America.. I mean wow. Even though most people here have the internet with File Sharing freely available.

Actually thats not true... it's not American soil, it's Sovern Iraqi soil that we are borrowing for the time being. And yes... you can get DVD's out here cheap... usually 5 bucks for 2 movies on 1 dvd (they even have 4 movies on 1 dvd but the tend to be uber crap) but you do get what you pay for... once in awhile you get one directly burned from a DVD, but for the most part its in a movie theater that someone taped with a vid camera... so you see people walking around, laughing, people talking, and some of these guys forget they are taping or something and place their drinks directly in the line of the movie... Not to mention some of them are in the worst seats in the house, and you don't get to see the whole screen...

Yes there is piracy out here... and when we go back, customs will yank all that crap from the people that get caught with it (yes even the military on deployment has to go through customs on their way back), for the most part, I don't give a damn about the movies... it gives me something to do during my off time...

General Discussion / Re: C# anyone?
Sat 10/07/2004 13:40:55
While C# isn't my specialty never really touched it... I know OOP... and with the compiler error,  and from what I know of Java (which I know isn't C#) the compiler has no idea what the class Piece is... I don't know if C# has import (I'm sure it probably has something similar) try

import class.path.Piece;

At wherever it happens to go in C#.... Thats all I can think of off the top of my head... and not really knowing the language....

Most serious games I have ever come up with naturally have humor in them, the trick is to not try to avoid humor, you will find that it will happen on its own. Just an example of a serious moment that from a 3rd person perspective is funny...

Loki is asleep around a camp fire
Pint hears something in the woods
Pint walks over to Loki and wakes him up
Pint: "Hey, I heard something in the woods, I think we should keep watch tonight."
Loki: "Fine, couple of questions though."
Pint: "Hrm?"
Loki: "I was asleep, right?"
Pint: "Yeah."
Loki: "And you are awake, right?"
Pint: "Yeah."
Loki: "Then I guess you have first watch."
Loki lays back down and goes to sleep.

While not outright funny, it was actually a very serious moment between an annoyed Loki and Pint. But it has enough humor in it that someone from a 3rd person perspective would get some amusement out of it...
