Whoa, that's alot of keyboards... do you really need more than one ???

I absolutely love the music though.   :) :) :)
If I have a project I need music for, I'll have this thread bookmarked.

I need as many sound sources as possible because I mainly improvise music instantly live... and so my gear is required to make it possible.

Hi. Bumping this topic for great news:

I finally finished in-game trailer for my current game soundtrack project and althought it is in fact my very first work to this soundtrack, is seems already very promising! The trailer was originally without any audiotrack, so basically I did everything you can hear! From sound effects and ambience to music... simply everything.   8)

Please share your humble opinions about it. I need some feedback as it is the "first touch" into this project.

It's ready with the first plan, but the plan has changed in the meantime. Anyway, I want you guys to know I'm working on some suggestions on the interface and all, and I'm going to have a short demonstration really soon.

I just know you're going to hate me for this, but...

How soon is really soon?  :o

As soon as possible!    ;)

Hi dear friend. I haven't seen you for a long time online... busy?

Anyway, you know I have listened your songs and reviewed them some time ago, but maybe it's better if I make them public.  ;)

Intro:

Sounds great. Nice and atmospheric, have even some level of being epic too! Negative point is only that the ending repeats too many times same cue. Just add something there and it will be great.

Village:

Hmm...  sounds like the melody is somewhat a bit awkward. Honestly this one sounds like happy/comedy tune. Try to make something different... more mysterious.  The pizzicato feels also wrong instrument for this song... or maybe it's just my own opinion.  ::)

Outdoor:

This is something like sweet spot on your soundtrack. You did exactly correct feeling! Also, this track being short loop, can be both good and bad thing. It's good to be short and this song is done so correctly that I can't imagine that it would be too short to annoy players when being looped in a background. In the other side there is always more demanding players wanting more than short tunes... but I think maybe that's not yet so topical question.

Castletheme:

Honestly, this sounds horrible. Don't get me wrong.. i like cheesy tunes and NES games (I own real 17 years old 8-bit NES and still works!) but this song is just so.. umm.. incorrect. It sounds IMHO ridiculous... but then I heard the normal version and what a difference!!! I... um... liked it! It's actucally good and it's feeling fits almost perfectly to the theme when you are wandering around castle! I have no idea why you ruined such a song with very static NES square waveforms.

Battletheme:

This cheesy tune might actually fit along with other orchestral songs. It's simply neat. Nothing else to say.

Bossbtheme:

The violin sequence playing whole track is pretty boring and needs more changes (funnily sounds like toccata! xD) the string pad sound good and fits there too, but that boring sequence is just annoying me... just add some variations or change it's pitch. As being boss theme, I think this slow pace will be just fine. Boss themes do not always need adrenaline spilling song. This slower pace actually describe pretty well how desperate you are against bigger enemy.

Credits:

This is the gem of the soundtrack. Honestly, it's simply outstanding!!! And I completely disagree about having too much bass... it makes it actucally more haunting and epic and less bass would just make it more static and dull. This bass adds really a big depth to the song!

Regards!

Didn't LucasArt use midi for the music?

No. LucasArt games were one of the very first games that supported new adlib music and made it famous and added their popularity. Sierra On-Line's King's Quest IV was the first game to support the Adlib. Unlike sound blaster, Digital audio (PCM) was not supported in AdLib.

"The Sound Blaster was fully compatible with AdLib, meaning it would play any past, present, and future game written for Adlib's own card. And it added 2 key features: a PCM audio channel, and a game port. PCM audio could record and play digital-audio recordings, which included dialogue, sound effects, and short musical performances. PCM audio complemented the YM3812, allowing game developers to include digital-audio for realistic sound-effects and speech that could not be adequately reproduced by the Yamaha's FM synthesis. And the Sound Blaster's inclusion of a game-port made it a single-card gaming solution."

"With a superior product and better marketing, the Sound Blaster quickly displaced Adlib as the de-facto standard in PC-gaming audio. Adlib's slow response, the Adlib Gold, did not sell well enough to sustain the company."

Ad-lib? Then you should try to get Yamaha DX-7 synthesizer or any 80's yamaha DX synth because I believe Ad-lib used this FM (Frequency Modulation) synthesis circuits for those classic metallic sounds.

Anyway, I have tried but all those synthplugins and software synthesizers are very uninspiring... That's why I always rely on hardware and have no problems with computers at all.   ;)

EDIT: Yes I was correct! "The AdLib used Yamaha's YM3812 sound chip which produces sound via FM synthesis."

Maybe an off-topic question, but....
Do you make a living from being a musician, or is it just your hobby?
If it is, I have to say that I adore people like you, having taken the complexity and technicality of all serious music-making stuff. Despite I love it, it always gives me shivers when I approach a synth and have no idea what all the knobs and sliders are about.

No, I am just free-time hobbyist, but that does not mean I wouldn't make music seriously. I am pretty sure that I am never able to earn that much from making music... just because I dislike boring commercial stuff and commercial stuff is made to make money so obviously I would lose this competition  ;)

The problem is that in commercial music, they always need to repeat previous experience (recall, HITS) and never going foward... why should leave something which brings your living... it's safer you know? That way also leads into obvious result that we can always expect same stuff from same artists and they will never make something fresh and different... having money and being famous are the main factors of domestical music industry... which is very pity.

The art of programming synthesizers always require some self-studying, you know. It applies to every tool you can imagine... what's the point of having a tool which you are not able to use? It's all about "know-how" and own experiences are very important. I can give you some help if you really own some synthesizer but remember, "There is always things which you cannot ever learn as much as there is always things that you cannot ever teach".

Wow, awesome setup. I only have one little Casio HT-700 :( But I love it bits. Just one question - It seems you only have one speaker? Surely that's quite a detriment when trying to mix in stereo.

LOL!   ;D

Really... of course I have stereo speakers! The right speaker just didn't fit to the picture of my mobile. Besides there is thousands of cds and my other personal stuff, so of course I didn't bother to take another picture just because of the speaker...

Besides, if you didn't notice about my first picture, I have also great sub-woofer on the floor, that big black box   ;)

oh, wow... you have the secret weapon from Casio! Awesome man!  You see my white keyboard with 3 wheels? That's Hohner HS-2 but in fact it's just brand clone just with different colors and is really Casio VZ-1, the last serious professional keyboard they ever made! The HT-series have also pretty amazing digital synthesis engine and is also related to mine VZ synthesizer.

this is an awesome livingroom, i wanna sit in this chair and fumble around as it would be a spaceship cockpit!
unfortunately my project isnt far enough to deserve sounds of any kind but i note your email/msn down and ifI'm in need of a musician, ill maybe contact you.

most of your work sounds like some sort of electronical-outer space-meditation-music (but good though), are you able to produce music which actually sounds like its made with common instruments (guitar, piano, fiddle..) ?

Sure I am able... I have everything you can imagine. It's just that I want to go beyond any ordinary instrument so piano and guitar are not valid for that reason... but I have also very realistic piano sounds and I like to play piano songs too.

Hi. I am just wondering because I already put this same message to the topic of offering service and there have been only couple contacts yet both were cancelled, but I feel that my topic will be buried along with all others...

So... this time I don't say I am offering but I am wanting a new project to compose music for. Are there anyone in need of soundtrack, or perhaps just something ad or little jingle of tune to make?

I am serious musician and offering my service for free, and I have no cheap software to do it. I have my own little home studio with some rare and extraordinary hardware equipment. I am also not just musician... I am also very much interested of sounds itself too... meaning that I am also sound programmer / sound editor / sound designer / sound effects maker / Ambient sound recorder / Sound experiementing or just about anything audio related!!! Let me know if someone needs my help.

when making music, for example, game soundtrack, I really want to go deep into game and even beyond that, so I could bring your project into best possible result.

I am also very emotional person so are my music too! I can create anything atmospheric music you can't even start to imagine... I always put the emotions and atmosphere of the music first.  The sounds itself does matter for me more than all theoretical stuff of the music. It's very important to keep music as humaness as possible, without computers, so in that way I can have more special human touch to my music... it makes really a huge difference!

I am so called spontaneous musician which means I do mainly everything in live... making music instantly and not exactly writing it... besides I cannot read notes  ;D

You can contact me directly with PM or e-mail. I have msn messenger too which I think would be much better since we could discuss in realtime. I can also demonstrate my music by improvising it in realtime through messenger!

Anyway to show how serious I am about making music, just take a look of my own modest gear setup:

and if you wonder what I have done so far.... not much... it's just that i do not have anything special to make, so mainly I have done just some abstract and lazy stuff. I really would like to make something better and I have much more potential but I need something special project to go deep to.

Here's my all songs which I bothered to record:

http://www.mikseri.net/artists/analogy.106176.php

And I am sure that not so many of musicians here have same quality gear at their fingertips...   ;)

Hi guys. Yes, it's the musician here  ;D

Anyway, I would like to say that I am not just musician but also sound designer, editor and programmer so I could basically remake much better sound effects if needed.   ;)

Also, since I neither have read the book or seen the movie (although I was supposed to...), I see this project as darn great opportunity as I do not have any influences of any previous work so I can keep my music as "pure" as possible... also because I do not know the plot so I can have very important first-time-impressions while making music.

I have really, very professional equipment althought I am not professional (and I do not even want to be), so I can offer very much for those who crave for something better than average midi music... and I am also very emotional so my music will be too... for me it's very important to have "human touch" in music which brings much more quality than just some loop based boring creations.

I am very glad that I am "on-board" with you along this project as I have always wanted to have something special project to go deep to... so I can concentrate on something theme and not just create something abstract from scratch...

Regards to Dualnames! I hope he will be more online in messenger as I can demonstrate new things in live... althought I am still busy configuring and arranging my gear setup until I can start making the soundtrack.

I can receive any suggestions about the music, if you like to comment about it.

By the way, please call me as "AnalogGuy" as it's my nickname in musical context... maybe I should make new account as it seems that the current account name cannot be changed  8)

Why did you post this thread then? Are you lost?

This is Critics Lounge. If you have no respect for opinions of other people, don't post here. Infact, don't release your music. You can keep it in your computer and enjoy all for yourself.

Somehow, you got the joy of creating all wrong.
Especially since music is one of most expressive things to create!

Okay, I am sorry... I was meaning about the my own way of making music and not the songs itself. I do respect other's opinions too. I would like to withdraw that silly phrase I said....

Ptp88,

Pretty good stuff. I enjoyed the references to other great synth-composers like Jean-Michel Jarre, Jan Hammer, Vangelis etc.

Especially Genesises was very soothing and relaxing. Brought me back to the good, old Equinox-days.

QuoteRemember, every song in there are spontaneous and made instantly without any preparations

Well, that's not necessarily something to brag about. Even the best spontaneous ideas often need a bit of work to really stand out. Especially in the gaming/film world where a cue has to underline the events going on on-screen. Remember that everyone can pick a mellow synthpad and create beautiful soundscapes, but very few can breathe the needed life into them to make them stand out from the rest. So if you spend 4 minutes recording a tune you're spontaneous, but if you spend 10 hours afterwards tweaking and polishing off the details so, you're a pro! :-)

/Thomas.

Spontaneous is the thing I need to "brag" about! Because no-one really make music seriously in that way! Listen Vangelis!!! Vangelis never compose but only improvise EVERY song. Only max. 2-4 dubs to add percussion and acoustic sounds.

"Especially in the gaming/film world where a cue has to underline the events going on on-screen..."

EXACTLY! Simply because making music instantly for a specific moments will suite soundtrack always much better than longer sessions because in then musician can keep the very first impression at best otherwise than longer composition where the impression will get a bit lamed.

Also I do not want to make longer sessions because I want to make music always instantly... but well... that's why I can stand-out from rest of all other musicians!!!

First, I second all that thomasregin said.

And second
some filtering could do wonders. Whatever you call your music genre yourself, it sounds Ambient to me. I'd use more reverb, delay and cutoff here and there. Also, those tracks sound like bases for much more complicated song. If you made another song onto your song, you would get a quality song.

What I mean by that is, you're using mostly single melody and instrument. But having both playing different tune at time, different notes, and supporting each other at same time would sound much more "full" and not so monotonous. Then again, monotony IS a characteristic of Ambient...

Do you know what beat is? It isn't simply to make song danceable or "popular" or force it into following a formula. It holds up the rhythm. You didn't use any... I would.

Apart from this, great stuff! Needs some polish, but it's really good at times.

Thanks for your opinions... but my music is made for purpose; I make my music in my own way and I want to keep my music always non-polished  ^^  I do whatever I like to do and honestly do not care about others what they say...

And I always do what I can with my bare hands and feets and I am still building up more expressive gear setup to be able to use more "sound sources" at the same time (Which is not easy for just a student budget!)

I am mainly "synth-freak", maybe, but however I am very emotional person and I am also very critical to music, that i only accept "honest" and meaningful music. In other word I like music more as "cinematic", for example, instrumental New age or ambient style. Also, I am more experiemental than classical. For example, I like improvising stuff "on-the-fly" and make music instantly for specific moment.

Remember I always just improvise and so I very rarely record anything as I can do everyday something different. I just have normal poor soundcard, but I can manage with it while I am not doing any serious music production. Here is my all songs I somehow bothered to record:

http://www.mikseri.net/artists/analogy.106176.php

Please don't mind although the site is in finnish language... but just take a look into my songs as they are titled in english and there is "download" button for each song. Also the first two songs are purely made just for fun in an experiemental style, so please do not take them so seriously... but however the two other songs called "Departure of X3" and "Genesises" are more likely what I really like to do.

Remember, every song in there are spontaneous and made instantly without any preparations. And instantly is meaning that making each song takes time as long as they are! Only "Departure of X3" was after all too long (over 10 min! when improvising, I clear my mind so the least thing I could do is watching clock!) so I cutted some parts away.

I guess if someone is up to making some deep adventure or other similar game, I could make music for such a project. I am serious too. If you are needing some more extra-ordinary stuff than normal music would suite, then you might like my own "production". Please let me know

THIS POST CAN BE REMOVED. I MADE SAME TOPIC INTO SERVICE OFFER THREAD.

Hi everyone. it was hard to decide where to put this note...

So... my hobby is making music. I own pretty much of stuff, when comparing to my student budget, to make up something but I just lack inspiration of new project.

I am mainly "synth-freak", maybe, but however I am very emotional person and I am also very critical to music, that i only accept "honest" and meaningful music. I'm going to make my own game. AGS seems to be better instead of direct programming languages.

But then... I face the big problem; I cannot make required backgrounds or any images at my own!   >:(

I still want this to be "one-man-project". I have all my own visions and I don't want others to make images for me.... unless I totally suck as a drawer and depress because of it....  but....  mainly I need make images of rooms like in this game:

http://www.fasco-csc.com/works/crimson/crimson_e.php

So... no need for stunning 3D graphic or fancy pictures.

Also, as in that game in the link, I think I'm going to make transitions between angles (1st person view) when turning into other direction. It's not primary thing... just a pictures would be fine if I'm even worse with animations.

is there any sort of program (freeware) which is designer for making rooms? I mean I do not want any programming things or special 3D designers... just a painter to make images. Or are there anything "tutorial" to paint background images?

I desperately need good advices..................  ???

Edit: I have already seen "The Big List Of Paint Programs!" topic, and I'm trying them all, but I think it's not because of the program... but because of the drawer itself!

It's same thing as about my favourite phrase of officers who have problems with computers: "There are no use of tools if you can't use them"  ;)
