Can someone translate this?  I think it's swedish:

"Leg läkare, spec i allmän psykiatri och allmänmedicin, psykoterapeut"

I'm guessing it says something like specializes in psychiatric medicine and psychotherapy?

thanks in advance,

I was browsing through wikipedia and stumbled upon a great write up of Monkey Island, and that led me to a thorough article on Adventure games, and then I even found an article on AGS.  Who wrote the article?  It must have been one of us.  It's flagged for some editing, and could probably use it...

There's an interesting article in today's New York Times about multiculturalism, or lack thereof, in Europe:

http://www.nytimes.com/2004/12/15/international/15letter.html?hp

Since so many Europeans are on this board, and it's a topic I've struggled with myself, I thought perhaps we could have a discussion about it.

I've spent about a year and a half in Germany, and traveled a fair bit in Europe as well, and it always struck me as interesting how on a whole, people could be extremely progressive or culturally liberal on a whole range of topics, but when it came to immigrants rights or issues of diversity, people would regress to the stone age.  For example, the whole issue of "religious" headwear and clothing in French schools.  I would talk about it with my crunchy, neo-hippy Berliner friends, who would passionately argue on the side of the French government that "religious" clothing should not be in schools.  I tutored a middle-aged Ukrainian sports agent for a while, and he was about as liberal as a middle-aged Ukrainian sports agent can get, and we seriously almost got in a fight over this topic.

What's the deal?  It always seemed to be not about religion in schools, as those students are obviously not "teaching" religion, but about assimilating foreigners.  I mean, didn't they make Sikh's take off their turbans in school?  If I'm not mistaken, aren't turbans of cultural significance, not religious?

This is just one example of course, but the article above discusses how Europeans, unlike Americans, have failed to embrace cultural diversity.  I don't think you can make that a blanket statement of course, but as a whole, it's definitely true.  Maybe it's just easier for us Americans to except that culture is an ever-changing thing, because that's the way it's always been in our country.  It's obviously different in Europe, as the odd bookstore or petrol station is often older than my country.  Old habits die hard.

So, thoughts?  Opinions?  Am I making any sense here?

How do I fix it so that once my character finishes walking, she returns to the 0 loop, the downward view.  Right now, if she walks to the side, she stops on the first sprite of the walk cycle, which has her leg in the air.  I want her to return to the first sprite, in another loop...

Critics' Lounge / Character Walk-Cycle C&C

This is a first draft of my main character's walk cycle.  Can I get some C&C?  I had a tough time making the closest leg look separate from the other.  I think there is some crappy shading on the legs too.

Another potentially stupid question, if I have one object on top of another, how do I change which one is on top of the other.  I've looked through the object related functions, and I don't see one that fits.  I'm sure there's an easy way to do it...

Hi, I just imported my first inventory sprite into my game, pasted it over the key image in the inventory items, and check the box that says "start with inventory item".Ã,  When i open up the inventory in the game, the image is there and looks fine, but when i click on the image and press "ok" in the GUI i get this error message:

(Global Script Line 27)
Error: SetLabelText: specified control is not a label

My Global Script Line 27 is this:
SetLabelText(0,0,useinvtxt);Ã,  }

What am I doing wrong?

General Discussion / Questions about the UK
Wed 08/12/2004 14:42:39
Hi,

Since there are so many people on the board who are British, I was hoping someone could help me out.  I'm doing a bit of research at work and I need to know if there is an governmental agency in England or the UK that monitors corporations and deals with trade regulations.  In the US we have the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), and all public companies have to file annual reports and other filings with this organization, and they in turn make most of these documents available to the public.  I'm researching some corporations in the UK, and was hoping that there was an agency similar to the SEC that regulates and monitors corporations.

If anybody could help me out, I'd be eternally greatful.

Critics' Lounge / Need Animation suggestions
Sat 04/12/2004 00:20:56

I seem to have backed myself into a corner here.  This character is looking into this room via a glass panel, and the main character walks in front of him when talking to him.

I'm having trouble figuring out how to easily animate him to show that he's talking.  I tried moving his jaw a bit, but it looked wierd, and I tried moving his head, but it's at such a wierd angle that it just looked like he had a tick.

Any ideas on how I could easily make a talking animation for him?  Or do you think I could get away without doing it?

Thanks

Logan

PS...C&C are welcome too!

General Discussion / ipod help
Thu 28/10/2004 21:07:59
Hey, I was hoping someone can help me here.  I haven't been able to get a good answer from the mac website or from friends....

So i just got an ipod, and I've ripped a lot of music to my pc's hardrive...So much so that it's just about maxed out.  Now I've imported all of that music to the ipod from itunes.  I then went back to my computer and deleted a lot of that original music from my harddrive and itunes, to make more room for more music.  I then put on more music and imported that to the ipod...but then lo and behold, it's automatically deleted the original music from the ipod that i had on itunes prior to deletion.  Does this makes sense to anyone?

so basically I've wasted hours upon hours of ripping because I deleted so much of it, and ipod took it upon itself to delete it as well.

Is there a way to just import new songs to the ipod without taking songs off, or am I expected to perpetually devote 18gigs of harddrive space (which i don't have) to itunes music, so I can fillup the ipod?

Hopefully there will be an ipod user among you...

Thanks!

Critics' Lounge / Hair/feet C&C
Tue 26/10/2004 02:13:41

Sorry if this is a bit small, hopefully y'all can zoom in some how.  I finally finished the side view of Emily here.  I also changed the hair of the front view.  What do people think of her hair?  The feet?  Would anyone make changes?  Thoughts?

Thanks for the help,

General Discussion / Don't you like Beer?!?
Mon 11/10/2004 06:08:53
As a break from the rough and tumble DEBATE thread, I thought maybe we could each take a stand on beer.  For my part, I'd like to say: Isn't beer great?  I know this is a controversial opinion.

Now this isn't a drunk post.  I just seriously like beer.  Someone said in another thread that Australian beer is good.  I've only had Fosters, and I've heard that Fosters is a joke in Australia.  Is that true?  I don't really like it at all.  Name some good Australian beers.  Name some good English or Scottish beers.  I'd like to know.

And for everyone that wants to bash on American beer...yes, the big corporate beer companies produce crap, but there are some top notch micro brews and smaller company beers in America that will stand up to a lot of European brews.

So, um, beer? Anybody?  Beer?

How do I get an npc to be above a walk behind?  I've got a guy on a couch that needs to be sitting on it, but i need the main character to be able to walk behind the couch.

I feel like there is an obvious answer to this, but i've looked around and can't seem to find it...
#74
Hi, haven't found this in a thread so...

When my main character first talks to a certain character, I want her to say something on only that first conversation.  So when she first meets this guy she says, "Hey you, what's your problem."  But then the next time the player clicks on that charcter to talk, it will just go to the dialogue topics.

I though maybe there would be a turnoption off for an entry point line, but i haven't seen one.  Will i have to do something more complex?  and if so, how?

Hi, as I've mentioned in the games in production forum, I'm having a bit of trouble with the side view of Emily here.Ã,  I really like the front view, but on the side view I can't get the shape of her hair to look right, and her face doesn't have the same sorta round childish look.Ã,  Any help would be greatly appreciated.Ã,  Thanks!

hopefully this image won't be too small to see...

EMILY ENOUGH: IMPRISONED
by Logan Worsley

THE (back) STORY:

Emily Enough, child prodigy and daughter of wealthy entrepreneur Charles Enough, developed an appreciation for the niceties of life at a very young age.  As an heiress to the Enough family dynasty, she ate the finest foods, cherished the finest dolls, and lavished in a lifestyle fit for a queen.

Emily was also blessed with the gift of intelligence.  She learned to read at the age of four, enjoyed Dickens at age six, savored Dostoyevsky at age eight, and debated the merits of Plato's Republic at age ten.  Her nearly encyclopedic knowledge of all things arcane stunned her tutors, and often intimidated her own parents.

In addition to money and intelligence, Emily was also cursed with an anti-social personality.  She cared little for the well being of others.  She took pleasure in torturing the family servants, both mentally and physically.  Her love of luxury was matched only by her willingness to inflict pain and violence upon others.  Her parents feared that they had given birth to an amoral monster, so much so that they sent her to a therapist at age seven.  Her therapy abruptly ended following an incident with a dull letter opener.  The child's irrational actions continued, and increased in frequency.  Anything short of perfection, from the quality of her breakfast to the softness of her sheets, would result in a violent mood swing.  As Emily's eleventh birthday approached, her parents contemplated institutionalization.  But the Enough family hesitated, fearing a scandal and a tarnished reputation.

The family paid dearly for their vanity, for on her eleventh birthday, Emily murdered them all.  On that day, Emily had received only three new ponies, instead of the usual five.  Without hesitation, Emily stuck a dinner fork in her mother's throat, and forced a steak knife through her father's heart.  A scene of unimaginable gore ensued, as Emily repeatedly stabbed her already dying parents. She then turned her attention to the servants, managing to slice the face and wrist of a scullery maid before a group of housekeepers and cooks pinned her to the ground.  The staff was horrified but not surprised.  The police were shocked, not only by the violent nature of the girl's crime, but by her complacency and disinterest in the incident.

Physical evidence and eyewitness testimony connected Emily to the crime.  The local community was outraged over the incident and many called for Emily to be tried as an adult.  The District Attorney, however, had been a friend of the family, and felt pity for this obviously disturbed child.  The DA tried Emily as a child.

A jury found Emily guilty of all charges, and sentenced her to ten years in mental ward.  She was sent to a newly privatized sanitarium owned and operated by the pharmaceutical interest Claxochem.  The game begins as she is escorted to her new home...

You'll play the game as Emily, child deviant and evil mastermind, as she rages against her captors and tries to escape the terrible corporate confines of The Claxochem Center for Mental Wellness!

THE SCREENSHOTS:

Fascinating Characters!

Scandalous Locations!

Never-ending Drama!

Projected Release date: It's been pushed back more times than i can count, so I won't even try to guess.

THE PARTICULARS:

640x400 artwork, hi-color, guaranteed to take up more hard drive space than you can ever possibly imagine.  I've completed all of the backgrounds, 95% of the sprites, and a fair bit of the programming.  I've got some animations left to do, and a whole lot more programming to do.  The story, back-story, and most of the dialogue is already written.  And oh yeah, cut scenes.  I still have to do those terrible cut scenes.

Soooo, let me know what you think of the graphics/back-story, and keep in an eye out in the coming months for a posting in the completed games forum

I'm trying to have my character walk to a doorway, animate the door opening, and then go to a different room.  The problem is, the character just walks to the door way, and then shoots right off to the next room without the animation.

This is what i did.  I made the door an object that is initially visible as closed.  In the object interaction editor, under interact object, I did:

Character-move character (Ego,81,108,false)
Object-Set object view number (0, 7)
Object-Start object animating (0,0,5,false)
Player-go to a different room at specific coordinates (9,300,176)

I was able to animate the door, but without the "player go to a different room command".  Maybe i'm way off here.  also, I don't understand the whole Boolean false/true thing.

thanks,

Logan

As the MONTHS wallow by since I first started my current project, and my own blinding obsession with pefection compels me to redo perfectly good graphics, I've just read on Yahtzee's site that it took him three weeks to make Odyessues (sp?) Kent...WTF?Ã,  Not that it's a work of art or anything, but it's a solid game...but to get to the point,

I'm wondering how long it takes most people to complete games?Ã,  Obviously it would vary on how long the game is, but on average.Ã,  I've been working on this damn 13 room game since October of this year.Ã,  It sounds ridiculous to even say it, and to be fair i've spent most of that time learning from scratch about graphics and AGS, but at what time do you just declare yourself insane for still continuing with a project out of sheer stubborness?Ã,

Here's a question, I would like a premade image to pop up when the player looks at a hotspot...in this case, when she looks at a piece of paper on a bulletin board, I want an image of the paper to pop up instead of a simple text message.  What would i do, an AnimateObject?  even if it's just a static image?

thanks,

Logan

I just wanted to say thank you for continuous scaling.

I had no idea that it existed, and then stumbled upon it yesterday.  How brilliant!  I was going nuts doing individual lines with different %'s.

That'll be all.
