Remember when games have either CGA or EGA mode, and it was always the big question if your computer could handle the EGA graphics?

Man, I loved those EGA graphics.  Nothing was better than playing Arkanoid in EGA mode.

Better than buying PC Gamer.  Still, you would have thought they could get Tony Soprano's face down better.

I play maybe a few a year.  I feel kinda bad about that, but I guess making games appeals to me more than playing them.

Plus, DOOM RULZZZZ!!!

Some people are great artists.  Other people can write great music.  Other people tell great stories.  Other people can program like there's no tomorrow.  But rarely can you find one person with all these skills.  Like prog said, most AGS games are solo projects, so you have to keep that in mind.

And regarding your question of how do you go about drawing...well, find yourself a drawing program like photoshop or paint shop pro and practice.  Find some screenshots of a game you admire and figure out how to draw similar graphics.  Read tutorials.  Practice.

I do believe it's very similar to a game played by the Mayans or the Incans...you know, the one where they kill the losers after the game is over.

I don't think the natural history museum is closed...it's website doesn't mention anything except some exhibits being under construction...

Either way, just about every museum in town is free!  I've been meaning to get over to the new (relatively) American Indian museum...i've only walked through it briefly and the building it quite stunning.

In rural areas, I'd say there is usually no local bus network...gas (was) cheap and people just drive everywhere.

Of course i'm not that familiar with that part of Canada (or most parts of Canada) but i can't imagine it's that much different than anywhere else around here.  If there is a bus, it would probably drop you off at some town and you'd have another like ten miles out to where you're staying.

But who knows?  Maybe i'm entirely wrong.  I'm sure we can figure something out.  I'm just saying it's going to have to be a consideration when picking a location.

November would probably work fine!  Even if we scaled it down to just saturday and sunday and it was just you, me and scummbuddy, that would be fine!

I took a quick look at the cost of cabins in Ontario & found a pretty useful page, at least to get a general idea of costs:

http://www.cottage-canada-usa.com/ontario.htm

I think these cottages are pretty cheap!  I don't exactly know where they are and depending upon how many people come, we'd have to find one big enough, but finding a cottage seems doable.

This one could hold twenty people: http://www.cottage-canada-usa.com/listing/0057.htm

One thing that occurs to me is getting around...This isn't europe where you can take trains and what not everywhere.  Unless someone lives nearby and has a vehicle, we'd have to rent a van or something...

Wow, that's quite an adventure.  And that island looked pretty far away!  Not too bright!  But i would have done it too.

AGS Games in Production / Re: Square John Boy
Tue 29/08/2006 16:55:40
Hi there.

I just wanted to let anyone who's interested know that I've been chiseling away on Square John.  I've pretty much got the GUI up and running, little bit of the programming done, and all the interior screens done.  With that said, I went through a big dry period while trying to draw outdoor scenes and sprites.  I just couldn't get anything to look the way i wanted it to.  I've been doing better and now I think everything is back on track.

I wanted to share a little drawing a made...it's a new design for the house.  I'm almost done with the drawover...I'll post that when I'm done for comparison.

Edit:  And here's the (pretty much) final version.

You know where this is all headed, right?  Soon there will be 50 people attending Mittens each year and all the fun & games will be over.

You're going to have to change the name to "The Annual Adventure Game Developers Conference"; rent out a proper conference center at, say, an office park in Springfield, Massachusetts (think Slough); and develop a detailed schedule of workshops that will include such absorbing topics as "How to Color in RGB" and "Falling Off Cliffs and You: The Sierra Guide to Success".  You'll have to hand out name tags, charge a $250 registration fee, hire security guards, book hotels at group rates, and hire guest speakers like the third lead assistant designer for Space Quest II.

Personally, I can't wait.  Just as long as there's a good bar around where I can get plastered.

Unfortunately, I've decided to postpone Washingttens due to the apparent lack of interest.  Only Scummbuddy and Dave Gilbert said they'd definitely come, and while I look forward to meeting these two gents, I was hoping to host an event with at least a couple more people.

Hopefully we can do this sometime in the future...

Did you all decide where mittens will be next year?

Don't make me start another thread again!
#116
Yes, please, let's come up with a final roll call.  Here are the people who said they would come:

1. Dave Gilbert
2. Edmundo
3. Scummbuddy

These people have said they're interested but haven't said anything since:

4. SteveMcrea
5. Darth Mandarb

If anybody else is interested, please write back as soon as possible!  If only Dave can or will come, then maybe we should do this another time when more people can or will come.  Either way, I'm happy to have you all down.

And "Illuminare Acqua" Akumayo, I'm sorry to have to set an age limit, but I don't want to be responsible for anyone underage.  It's nothing personal and I know it sucks, but that's the rule I'm setting down.  Sorry  :-\.

Here's another version, I moved a tree over in the foreground and turned up the blues a bit.  I think it makes it feel a little colder.

Rix, the trees should probably have some snow on them...unless it's recently melted.  I've tried putting snow on them but it's sorta difficult and looks too busy.  Snow is kinda a pain in the ass.  In fact, drawing outdoor backgrounds really sucks.  I hate it, and it's totally slowing up production of this game.

Alliance, the game is called Square John Boy.  It's somewhere in the production thread.

Thanks for the comments.   Any more would be appreciated.

Hi there,

I'd like a little feedback on this background.  I've been struggling lately with drawing outside scenes.  I'm not really satisfied with this, and it's mainly the background trees.  They don't look defined enough to me...they're just too mushy.  But I don't know how else to go about it.  Any suggestions or drawovers would be really appreciated.

Thanks

Logan

You were featured on Boing Boing!  Way to go!  Can't get much bigger than that.
