General Discussion / Re: American Idol ...

Sorta along the same vein, I was thinking the other day how much pop music sucks, like Britney Spears or whatever it is the kids listen to, but then I thought about how much that must sound like the sterotypical old person response.  You know, like how old people in the thirties were like, "Jazz isn't music, it's noise."  Or like how old people in the fifties where like, "Rock n Roll isn't music, it's noise".  Or like how old people in nineties where like, "Rap isn't music, it's noise".  Of course, a lot those sentiments seem ridiculous to us now.

The question is, is my repulsion to music on the top 40 a result of my being old (at a ripe 24 yrs of age) or is it really just crappy music.  You can try and stay true to some kind of relativism, but I'm not sure that Britney will be accepted by future generations as say a Miles Davis is...

At least you have stuff to look at, in my office I just have an empty cubicle staring at me.  Friday afternoons are the worst.  It's 75 degrees out and sunny.

Well that's good then.  I'm glad that he writes songs and has his own material.  That's something you don't see very often in pop music.  I wonder if it's any good.

What I don't get is how they're going to market Bo.  I mean, what is he going to sing, being a "rocker" and all?

I guess what it comes down to is I don't understand how he is a "rocker", or what exactly a "rocker" is and how this has entered our collective lexicon.  Does having long hair and flared jeans make you a "rocker"?

After singing dozens of corny Mariah Carey-esc love balads on live tv, I don't see him having enough legitimacy to be anything other than some made-for-tv corndog.  Maybe I'm not giving him enough credit, hopefully he's got enough brains to stay away from idiot producers who want to force feed him stupid pop material.

Damn it all, I guess I'm a fan too.  At least my girlfriend and I watched it a pretty often this season.  I think the attraction lies in how awful the songs are and how bad these peformers can be.  Sorry, but I can't stand Carrie or these songs they have them sing (that new "single" she sang?  Come on, that wouldn't have even been a hit in the 90s).

Bo does have an amazing voice, and I was a big fan of Nadia (and Scott, just because he was arrested for domestic violence, what an american idol!!!) but most of these other singers were just annoying.

Still, I did like to watch.  Simon is always good for a laugh, and I enjoyed watching Randy try soooooo hard to be a living breathing stereotype.

It's good for Bo that he got second, that means he's not legally owned by American Idol for the rest of time as per the contract, but is still famous enough to make records.

I think his legs look a bit off---if he were a real person he'd probably fall over standing that way i.e. with his legs so far apart.  I'd also say that his torso is a little too long and his legs are a little too short.  But the boots rock!

I've had this very same problem and no one could figure it out.  Strangely enough, it comes and goes.  Once it was in one room, then in another, then disappeared entirely.

Here was the thread:

Adventure Related Talk & Chat / Re: Loom

Loom is probably my favorite adventure game, and it something that I'm always going to try to emulate when making games.  It's everything that adventure games should be---rich in story, setting and interface.  It's one of the few adventure games out there that could be made into a book and still be fantastic...most adventure games wouldn't make a good comic book.

Thanks for the comments.  He is a mental patient, who inexplicably is wearing a prison jumpsuit.  The forehead is big because I was drawing from a photo of Clint Eastwood---that guy has one big forhead!  It's a little exagerrated in this case, but it's a cartoon.

Critics' Lounge / Sprite C+C for Emily Enough
Tue 26/04/2005 05:00:37
Can I get a little C+C on this sprite?  It's the last character I've had to draw for my game...I think he looks pretty cool.  I always struggle a bit with the hair, but I think that looks ok...

I have sympathy for you.  I've been more of a casual smoker myself, though I was smoking a lot for a while mainly because my girlfriend smokes, but it's hard when people around you smoke.  I stopped---but my dilema can't compare with yours.  I think the cold turkey thing is the way to go.  It's definitely a matter of willpower.  I always find that everytime I want a cigarette I just think about dying.  And how that would suck.  Hmmm, good luck!

Let us know how it goes.

AGS Games in Production / Re: Hero Theorem

You're right Steve, it does take some innate ability, but there are skills and techniques involves that anybody can learn.  This is especially true when it comes to computer graphics, as there are very specific ways to do things that can be very helpful in the long run (though a lot of it can be specific to the drawing program used).  I think if Bernie showed how he does a BG step by step, layer by layer, you'd see that there are a lot of techniques that anybody can learn.

Bernie, this game looks great.  You should really make a tutorial on background art.  I would love to see how you make these great backgrounds--in a step by step way.  I know a lot of other people would appreciate it too.

Thanks!  I think I'll have a playable game from start to finish in probably a week or two.  Then I just have to make an intro and ending animation, and add music.  Then beta testing.

#435
Oh I see, thanks for walking me through it.  That's not so complex after all.
#436
Hmmm, thanks for trying, but I don't get it.  I guess I'm not familiar enough with Global Variables to do it.  Instead, I've just given the player an invisible inventory item that is taken away once the script ends in the next room.  I think it should work---though it's sorta silly.
#437
I figured that I would have to use Global Variables, I'm just not sure how to use them in this situation, which is why I posted the previous message.

What would the variable be applicable to?  I'm used to using them for if you interact with an object, and need to change the interaction and stuff like that...but this is all concerning a room.
#438
Sorry for the strange subject,

I've got a situation where the player is in one room, something happens and she's transported to the next room.  I want some code to run, and then I want her to say something only once after she enters the room on that occasion.  She's been in the room before, so I can't just use the first time player enters screen thing in the editor.  I feel like there must be an obvious way to do this.  I've been looking through the help file index, but can't find something applicable.

As it is right now, I put this code in the Player Enters Screen after Fadein section of the room's interaction editor, after a conditional if she has an inventory item (right before the transport she gains an inventory item).  The problem is, after she gets the inventory, she always says the message when she enters that room.

help?

#439
Odd indeed!  A few days ago I removed the regions entirely, and as I said, tested it with hotspots.  Then I removed the hotspots and just left it without anything for a while.  I went back to it tonight and put the regions back in with the change room commands, in order to restore the room to the original settings that were giving me trouble.

And now it works fine!  I don't know what happened.  I really don't consider this problem solved, because I still don't know what the problem was.  Either way, it works so that's good.

Thanks for the help, and I'll write back if a similar problem arises again.

This is slightly off topic, but does anybody know if there is a way with Paint Shop Pro to rotate without anti-aliasing?  I use Paint Shop Pro 5, and the most annoying thing is that when you rotate an image, it anti-aliases the hell out of it.  It means that to do simple arm movements you have to draw the whole hand instead rotating like Eric shows.

But it's different with Photoshop?  I have access to Photoshop, just wanted to finish my game before learning a new program.  Maybe i'll upgrade...
