Thanks!

Ha!  That did it.  Why was it 2?

No, it isn't, but I'm a little lost here.  Here's the whole troublesome bit of code:

if (GetCursorMode()==0) SetLabelText(2,0,"Walk to @OVERHOTSPOT@");
if (GetCursorMode()==1) SetLabelText(2,0,"Look at @OVERHOTSPOT@");
if (GetCursorMode()==2) SetLabelText(2,0,"Interact with @OVERHOTSPOT@");
if (GetCursorMode()==3) SetLabelText(2,0,"Talk to @OVERHOTSPOT@");
if (GetCursorMode()==4) {
   string usinginv;
   string useinvtxt;
   StrCopy (useinvtxt, "Use ");
   GetInvName(character[GetPlayerCharacter()].activeinv,usinginv);
   StrCat (useinvtxt,usinginv);
   StrCat (useinvtxt," with ");
   StrCat (useinvtxt,"@OVERHOTSPOT@");
   SetLabelText(0,0,useinvtxt);  }

It's something I copied from someone else so I get that nice status line at the bottom of the screen.   My inventory GUI is GUI 1, so I imagine I should change that first 0 in the final line to 1, but what object number do I use?  I don't have a label in the inventory box, so do I create one?

I want the status line to display the name of the inventory item after I click it.   You know, so it says, "Use stick on sofa" and so on.

Really, so the Inland Revenue handles EVERYTHING related to tax?  We have the IRS in the US, but local governments have tax assessors that determine how much certain properties should be taxed and other things like that.  Interesting...

So I guess you're telling me that as far as you know, the only way to get public documents would be to go to the UK (nothing is online?).

That's fine by me, I just doubt my boss would go for it.

Ok folks, here are a couple more questions that I'm hoping someone can answer.  This time it's about Scotland, specifically about local governments.

Do you have local tax assessors and public records departments?  For example, in the US, a lot of state counties make property and tax records available online.  Is there something similar in Scotland, or throughout the UK for that matter?

I've been trying to figure out how Scottish and UK government works, and I've found it somewhat baffling.  I get the whole devolved government thing, and it would seem that Scotland has Councils throughout the country that are somewhat similar to our county governments, but in looking at say, the Argyll and Bute Council website, I'm not seeing useful links for public records.

I would appreciate any help you can give me,

Logan

Hi, I just imported my first inventory sprite into my game, pasted it over the key image in the inventory items, and check the box that says "start with inventory item".Ã,  When i open up the inventory in the game, the image is there and looks fine, but when i click on the image and press "ok" in the GUI i get this error message:

(Global Script Line 27)
Error: SetLabelText: specified control is not a label

My Global Script Line 27 is this:
SetLabelText(0,0,useinvtxt);Ã,  }

What am I doing wrong?

Excellent!  Thank you very much SSH.

General Discussion / Questions about the UK
Wed 08/12/2004 14:42:39
Hi,

Since there are so many people on the board who are British, I was hoping someone could help me out.  I'm doing a bit of research at work and I need to know if there is an governmental agency in England or the UK that monitors corporations and deals with trade regulations.  In the US we have the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), and all public companies have to file annual reports and other filings with this organization, and they in turn make most of these documents available to the public.  I'm researching some corporations in the UK, and was hoping that there was an agency similar to the SEC that regulates and monitors corporations.

If anybody could help me out, I'd be eternally greatful.

Very impressive BG Darth!  I love it.  I also love the character, he looks like Colonel Mustard.

I def. like the lighter floor color.  You really needed a bit more contrast in terms of colors, but i think that's been achieved.  As for the scaling, I thought originally that it might look wierd without it, but so long as you limit where the character walks, you might be able to get away without doing it.  Plus, your character seems to fit in the BG as is.

It might look wierd if he goes up the stairs though...maybe you can just have him go to the next room when he gets to the edge...

Wow, that's really great ProgZmax.  That's really helpful.  I think I'll still do it without the reflection, but the head movement is great.
#571
That would be pretty time consuming, and I'm trying to finish this game sometime within the next ten years.  It's a good idea, and I would do it if I could, but I think I'll just move the jaw and possibly the hand.

Thanks for that pic Candle, it's helpful.

Critics' Lounge / Need Animation suggestions

I seem to have backed myself into a corner here.  This character is looking into this room via a glass panel, and the main character walks in front of him when talking to him.

I'm having trouble figuring out how to easily animate him to show that he's talking.  I tried moving his jaw a bit, but it looked wierd, and I tried moving his head, but it's at such a wierd angle that it just looked like he had a tick.

Any ideas on how I could easily make a talking animation for him?  Or do you think I could get away without doing it?

Thanks

Logan

PS...C&C are welcome too!

First of all, check out Al Lowe's site, particularly the download section.  He's got examples of design documents that he used for Leisure Suit Larry.  Read them over to get a feel for how much planning should be involved.

If you've already got a big idea, start writing a story.  Your puzzles and plot twists may develop organically.  But seriously, to save yourself big headaches later on, use this time to organize your game BEFORE you start creating graphics and animation.

Oh, this is where you can get those docs:

First of all, there are plenty of cases of police brutality and extreme use of force that you should look into for evidence to support your case.  For example, check out the Amadou Diallo and Rodney King cases.  I just googled NYC police shootings and this page came up:

http://www.saxakali.com/CommunityLinkups/NYC%20Police%20Killings%201999.htm

I can't vouch for all the facts on this particular page, but bottom line is there's lots of info out there to plead your case.  Also, I would recommend discussing the recent killing of an Emerson student in Boston via the use of a "non-lethal" weapon.  It's a really under-reported case, and a real tragedy, and a perfect example of police using excessive force.

I'm sure there are plenty of cops who mean well, but when human beings are put in positions of authority over other human beings, people can really go nuts.  Look at Stanley Milgram's research experiment in obedience (people administered electro shocks, or thought they did, to healthy individuals because they were told to).  Particularly, people who wore uniforms were more likely to administer the shocks.

Having been on the receiving end of police extremism, I firmly believe that police forces should be held accountable for their actions.   If there are no checks, then what's to stop overzealous officers from doing as they want?  So long as there aren't cameras on them, nothing.

I use to spend the entire day working on my game when I was unemployed, and before I started traveling for work I would work at least a few hours a day, but these days I'm lucky if I can spend a few hours a week on it.

Yeah, it is, and quite honestly, adventure games are usually the last thing that I would buy.  And I absolutely love adventure games. It's just such a hit or miss genre.  Free games of excellent quality, as often found here, make me not care that there isn't commercial interest.  It kinda makes me happy that there isn't commerical interest.

General Discussion / ipod help
Thu 28/10/2004 21:07:59
Hey, I was hoping someone can help me here.  I haven't been able to get a good answer from the mac website or from friends....

So i just got an ipod, and I've ripped a lot of music to my pc's hardrive...So much so that it's just about maxed out.  Now I've imported all of that music to the ipod from itunes.  I then went back to my computer and deleted a lot of that original music from my harddrive and itunes, to make more room for more music.  I then put on more music and imported that to the ipod...but then lo and behold, it's automatically deleted the original music from the ipod that i had on itunes prior to deletion.  Does this makes sense to anyone?

so basically I've wasted hours upon hours of ripping because I deleted so much of it, and ipod took it upon itself to delete it as well.

Is there a way to just import new songs to the ipod without taking songs off, or am I expected to perpetually devote 18gigs of harddrive space (which i don't have) to itunes music, so I can fillup the ipod?

Hopefully there will be an ipod user among you...

Thanks!

yeah, i wish i was back home in Connecticut, or in boston or somewhere other than DC.  I bet people are going nuts.  I wish it were a better series though, the cards barely put up a fight.  The pennant race was excellent though.

not that i'm really that into baseball.  I'm just happy the yankees lost.

Critics' Lounge / Re: Hair/feet C&C

The skin color is staying the same.  It looks good in the game, and it's a theme I have going on with other characters.

Nickq, what do you mean "the point of the hair"?  The top of her head?  Where the light strikes?  Could you explain?

Thanks

Sorry if this is a bit small, hopefully y'all can zoom in some how.  I finally finished the side view of Emily here.  I also changed the hair of the front view.  What do people think of her hair?  The feet?  Would anyone make changes?  Thoughts?

Thanks for the help,

Logan
