General Discussion / Re: Rating system

Thank you, Snarky, I think you express many valid points.

As one of the initiators of this current system, I ask for respite now to deliberate with the panel.
I would also prefer if panel members would refrain from posting until we have discussed a future direction.

As for now, it seems likely that a document with guidelines and criteria will be made public. Whether ratings will be anonymous or not is another question.

I know what your problem is. Since you have little else in your life going on right now, there's so much pressure on you to accomplish something during all those lonely hours in front of the computer.
You need to make that time precious, something rare. You need to fill your days with more than just a monitor staring back at you.

The problem is that the more reclusive you are now, when you're basically in the prime of your life, the harder will it be for you to socialise, make friends and meet women later on. Because you will get used to and comfortable with the solitude.

I would prescribe more social activities, maybe evening courses, volontary work, date women, maybe start your own study circles.

Actually, it wasn't rare in the novels that Sherlock fought his enemies with his fists. I remember distinctly that he was described as a formidable boxer on one occasion

Dualnames, I wasn't able to understand half of your post.

As unjust is that H2G2 towel day got rated 3 cups though it can be enjoyable and breakdown by one dollar was rated with two stars because it had 1 puzzle that was a little hard

Are you saying it's "unjust" that your game got 3 cups...because it's enjoyable? Don't get it. Is it worth more? Or less?
And is Breakdown's rating unfair because of...what? The panel left a comment to explain the rating. Apparently the panel member found that "Shows a lot of promise but the gameplay consists of more than a few tedious pixel hunts or illogical/strange solutions."

Difficulty and length has nothing to do with a game's quality. EVER.
Don't you agree that a game shouldn't be so hard that the player can't progress at a reasonable pace, nor easy enough to let him win without trying or thinking?

Also don't you agree that a game should have at least a modicum of content before it ends, to let the player get into the plot and the characters?

I think everyone needs to remember, before you jump on the complaint bandwagon, that the descripition for 2 cups is that the game is reasonable and worth a try.

Yeah, with a big axe like that you probably can't parry as with a sword; you either just block the blow with the shaft and hope it doesn't break, or try to duck...

We've noted your feelings, Leon.

At the end of the day, this is Chris Jones' site, and you add games to his database. The current system was developed as a compromise between several parties, and it has worked out suprisingly well given the nature of the task.

The rating panel takes into account specific criteria that have been agreed upon beforehand. Before the first games of the enormous backlog were rated, there were example games set up to help get a consistent rating.
The panel works under the supervision of each other and moderators. Any rating can be challenged and discussed. Panel members don't rate their own games.

Many panel members have spent literally hundreds of hours playing through the database. If they ask not to be exposed to all the complaints and pm's and "suggestions" that would follow a signed rating, let's just accept that. The database and the rating may seem all fun and game, but it's a remarkably dirty business.

Just saying, cause you come across as a tad demanding right now.

You can't anti-alias a normal sprite, as it will show up with a transparency "halo" when imported to the ags.

Regarding the animation; I think one way to improve it even more would be to stretch her (his?) right arm in the final frame, as it appear to be bent now. Her right elbow wouldn't be visible if the arm was fully extended, for instance.

Also, wouldn't it be more natural to advance with your left foot when you swing from the right? I tried some swings and I feel much better taking a big stride with my left foot than with my right.

Beautiful, Corby, it actually looks like the proper way to swing an axe

Snake, are you saying that you cannot conduct statistical surveys?
With a selection of ten you're bound to fail, but with 1000 you're probably getting pretty close to reality (given that there is a certain demographic spread in the survey group).

Many languages have up to twelve "original" names for numbers, and then start combining the name parts for 13 and upwards, which may indicate some sort of early idea of implementing a base 12 system.
If it wasn't for this fact, the "teens" would start at eleven...

DGmacphee once made a game called Ultimerr XXII or something, don't ask me where it's at though

He probably wants to prevent you from posting there

Khris's version is a bit smoother, but I don't really see much AA going on.

If the sprite looks strange you probably need to draw it in higher resolution, using more pixels. Ideally the outlines would be anti aliased using alpha layer

Sorry, but "original and signed" implies a limited edition print, numbered and signed by the artist himself.
Various foundations and other institutes can manufacture and sell authorised prints for any amount of euros, down to the price of a simple poster.

But for a truly signed and numbered limited edition print by Warhol to cost â,¬100, it must be an exceedingly large edition.
Not like these prints, for instance.

Wait, I'm smelling a creationism/evolution debate!

Ouch...you've really started in the wrong end here.

Start with sketches to get the basic proportions and perspective right. Build up your image layer after layer, with the background first.

Right now it seems like you've tossed in some objects into an abstract space.

Jon, please don't tell me that was an intentional pun...

You pronounce "I have a new band" British because you have a "yod" in new, that is, saying it like [nju:], instead of [nu:].
Even though many American varieties don't drop the yods, it's probably a short-cut to make it sound really typical American.

The word "compass" would probably sound more American if you made the first vowel sound slightly longer, and shifted it a bit towards the /a:/ in father instead of the "short O" /ɒ/.
This is described here quite well.

Asking CJ about his favourite AGS game is reserved for Mittens only.

Not that he will answer it there either, but anyway.
