General Discussion / Re: A question

Can you elaborate a bit?
Are you talking about a game with adjustable settings, or a game where you can change the appearance or "stats" of characters from a set of options, or a game with a more or less open code, where users can import their own functions and graphics etc?

I love it when Darth defends the hippie movement  ;)

I feel i should clarify something about the placebo effect.

The placebo effect is not a positive effect. It is something that applies to clinical trials.

Oh, on the contrary; placebo is benign in the sense that it gives the patient positive mental energy to heal. It doesn't mean that a specific kind of medicine can be marketed solely for its placebo effect; anything can be a placebo as long as the patient believes it to have healing power.

Also, it should be noted that this mental energy is only one step on the path to getting well, and naturally a placebo pill can't cure more serious afflictions on its own. But it's nothing magic about the fact that in most cases, you need to believe that you can be well in order to get well.

The only negative aspect of placebo is that it can make medical tests tricky to carry out, if you don't know how to do it right.

Homeopathy is inherently unscientific, since the very theory behind it goes against both chemistry and common sense. If it works, it's purely placebo, or by way of the supernatural.

With acupunctur you can at best question the benefits; even if you don't believe in energy meridians and the holistic approach to medicine, the immediate release of endorphines is well documented (albeit not very revolutionary or difficult to achieve in other ways).

Also, personally, I find this debate useless as it's seemingly as strong as the religion v science debate with both sides so strongly opposed to the other.

Oh come on!
Debates aren't useless just because people disagree strongly. I came into this thread with a pretty open mind, and I've already shifted a lot in my opinions.

I mean, we have to be able to discuss something in here, more than just general mindless whackiness.

When I look at it objectively, I think it's absurd that alcohol is legal.
Think of all the crimes we wouldn't have, all the domestic violence we would avoid, all the drunk driving we wouldn't have, all the loose cannons that would be less loose.

I enjoy alcohol myself; in fact it does wonders for me, but I would gladly sign up for a total, global ban. If I could push a button that would blow up all alcohol and erase the entire concept from the memory of mankind, I would, because I think it would be so beneficial for our world.

I think the alcohol vs. canabis debate is slightly flawed. Haschis and marijuana are not at all as intertwined in our society as beer and wine. The latter carry an enormous cultural weight, and are much more than just means of intoxication, which is why it's relatively easy to ban various peripheral drugs and substances, but nearly impossible to discuss a banning of alcohol.

Also, when people list all the facts and numbers that support the legalisation of cannabis, I think they must be forgetting or at least ignoring several factors.
I know of people who've had psychoses, and entered depressions, after just haschis usage, and I often hear that people who smoke a lot during a long period of time seem to sort of get lost in time, and later say that they felt how they disappeared during that time, and afterwards can't account for whatever happened during that period. I don't mean a literal unconsciousness; I mean that they function almost as normal, but can't really use their time well. I dunno really, just thinking loud right now.

The main reason the US Government is going apeshit is because The Obaminator is trying every angle he can to convince people that a nationalized healthcare system is the way to save us from all sorts of horrible things

Erh...nevermind. I guess Obama deserves his share of conspiracy theories...

Well, technically the swine flu is more dangerous than the normal flu. It just so happens that a lot of people above 40-50 are immune to it, so over all the casualties don't exceed a normal flu.
But during a normal flu season, most of the severe cases and the casualties are found among the elderly. A normal seasonal flu does not kill off as many healthy young adults as the swine flu has done.

This being said, it's still much less dangerous than media makes it appear.

On a side note, I can't be vaccinated due to my egg-allergy.

Let me guess; you have been experimenting for hours and hours to find a way of revealing that hidden text?

Yeah, Terran, I was just gonna say the same.
Sounds like somebody took the concept of normal sleep paralysis, and exploited the fact that very many people have had this feeling without telling or being able to tell about it. Quite cheap if you ask me.

It doesn't matter if nobody knows you, or if you've done absolutely no impact on the community, the important thing is that you come back :)

Yeah, it's the speed issue that discourages me from playing these real-time strategy games more than very casually.

It's basically the same with battle of middle earth, and warcraft 2, or any similar game; once people have discovered the best strategies, it's all about executing said strategies as fast as possible. Just makes me stressed.

Critics' Lounge / Re: My graphics

I think you have a very long way to go before your graphics can be used in a practical way. Except by Derek, apparently.

I agree with Hudders that your characters are very disproportionate and highly "random" when it comes to shapes and forms. It's one thing to pursue a "whacky" style, but that doesn't mean you should draw every single limb and ear and eye totally arbitrarily, and intentionally misplaced.

If you want to progress as an artist, I think you should study both anatomy and cartoon drawing; study the works of your favourite comic artist and you'll see that there's a method to the madness.

Well if they kill everyone involved and sell their organs, as you speculate, I suspect they will indeed get some criticism from the "peace at any cost" crowd.

I think it's also important to read up on the background of the Somali pirating movement, which has a lot to do with illegal fishing in their waters and illegal waste dumping on their shores.
Naturally, this doesn't excuse pirating, but it's a part of an explanation to why it exists.

So I should have a demo available in roughly 40~50 years.

For your information, statements like that are not perceived as ironic around here.
