Interestingly, I much prefered the first version, with the "whacky" perspective. The new version looks stiff in comparison.
I think if you worked on the first naïvistic version and polished it a bit, it would turn out better in the end. You could even increase the whackiness of the perspective.

Are you people from Mars or something?    I find it hard to believe that anyone in the civilized world doesn't know that this kind of thing is a normal occurrence in  most "so called" Muslim countries.

Rick, the occurence I'm referring to is the legally sanctioned revenge, which is pretty much a new thing.
My (ex) life partner since 3 years is from Iran, so I don't need to be lectured on what's going on in that part of the world. I can assure you that I've been outraged plenty of times because of the examples you brought up, and they are not new to me.

Systematic abuse and oppression of women is an everyday thing, but this is the first time I hear about a woman who will be allowed to take revenge on her attacker.

And the thought of having the perpetrator strapped down and receive acid in his face, in a controlled manner, is a pretty shocking image. Not that there isn't an animal part of me that finds satisfaction in this morbid way of carrying out justice.

This very literal application of Islamic law is soon to be carried out in Iran.

http://edition.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/meast/12/14/iran.acid.justice/

It wasn't in Swedish newspaper until recently, and I was shocked enough to post it here.

In some islamic countries it's common that envious or indignated men pour acid in the faces of women to render them outcast. It seems one woman is soon to get even.

I'm an educated English teacher, and I'm certainly more qualified to teach grammar, literature and linguistics than the average native Englishman, even though the latter is undoubtedly better than me at speaking and understanding English in general.
Knowing and teaching are two different things.

Speaking of which, I intend to take a Celta certificate this summer just to prove to potential customers that a non-native can still be a good teacher.

Yay, we have finally found the right design for the new site! Can't believe how much work Loomy and Darth went through for nothing!

I used to have the entire Internet on floppies.
Damn was it tedious to surf the web back then!

Ok made this extremely crude drawing just to prove some points. I hadn't even got my tablet so I just sketched roughly with the mouse.

Basically my main idea was to show a way to keep a focused lighting, and get some coherency in your drawing.

Obviously, I changed the style a lot but you can improve lighting while still keeping your style.

To start with, get rid of all those cast shadows since they first of all don't make sense, and second they give an extremely jumbled impression.

Then I think if you're having a light source, like the one you've got outside the door, use it. Make it an eye-catcher, something the eye can rest on.

Just some ideas.

Oy, relax, he's not being that defensive.

But I'm curious to see those backgrounds, which are supposedly much better than the original ones. So how about some screenshots?

Kk, I'm getting it now.

I think I woke up on the I-don't-get-it side of the bed this morning. This feeling was amplified by SSH's post about an obvious joke.

Then at around 5 pm I got some more sleep and suddenly the world was crystal clear.
Except for SSH's obvious joke.

You certainly have some good points there, and my theory on information may need some revising :)

But still...your poster sure looks nice, but isn't it still a bit cluttered? To my mind, it looks like a newspaper page full of various ads. It's hard to spot the main event, so to speak, or even the name of the event.

Design-wise, I think you've nailed it, except for the text "shadow" (the magnified, low-contrast background text) which has this generic web-design feeling to it.

So, either way, it's a vast improvement.

Progz's version is definitely an improvement, but I'd still say her chest and shoulders look a tad big. To be sure, we're not talking anomalies here, just a fair bit larger than average.

I remember playing BASS and monkey island with floppies, and most of the time was spent on watching loading screens and searching for the right disk. For some reason, many of these large games weren't constructed so that a series of adjacent screens could be loaded from the same disk, but instead seemed spread out randomly over the disks.

But Abstauer, I feel a bit dumb here but I actually don't really understand your post. What was the embarrassing episode? I think I need the "further explanation"-version.
#1696
Hold your horses, amigos, this is far from done.

Edit:
Since I don't think written advice will come across properly here, I'll just make an edit later today to show you my points.
#1697
Oh, you definitely need to focus the lighting a bit here. You've got highlights and shades and far too many contrasts spread all over the screens.
Especially the second bg is hard to read because of the jumbled impression.

The further you get from the "central" point of the image, the point which should catch the eye, you need to gradually decrease saturation and contrast.

I think a first step would be to clean up some text there. Professional posters rarely have that much information, instead they try to make the viewers curious and inspire them to find out more about the happening.

The poster at this stage is just a clutter of text-snippets in so many shapes and colours it makes you nauseous.

One option would be to have one poster, and then a little information folder with more text, that could lie around tourist information stands and whatnot.

We were taught intrusive R's back in Uni. Not to use them, of course (unless we wanted to) but that they existed and why.

I distinctly remember hearing it in Mods' AGS opera "Helm", where the songs goes he'll draw[r] a background for you and me, so it's funny that the first to respond here is Mods himself :)

I hear it most often when Australians and Brits speak, and it seems very frequent in certain phrases, like "China[r] and x" and "law[r] and order".

As a non-native, I tend to notice every single time it occurs.

After a few mishaps last month I'm left financially challenged (only until next paycheck, but still) so I'm re-living my student days all over again.

Here's my favourite recipe-o-cheapness.
What you need:
Cabbage
Carrot
Onion
Garlic
Pepper
Various beans (try to get some sort of bean mix)
Tomato sauce
Rice

The trick here is that all ingredients are stupidly cheap, and most people don't know that cabbage and carrot in thin slices are perfect to fry.
Basically shred all the vegetables into pizza-sallad-sized chunks and fry them in oil. The carrot can even be pealed down right into the pan. The beans will provide proteins, but if you've got the cash and want to bulk up, add bacon (preferably cut into small chunks with scissors) or some spicey sausage. Serve with rice.
