General Discussion / Re: AGS on Wikipedia
Sat 14/02/2009 11:57:35
I hope that everyone, all things considered, agrees that Wikipedia is much better off with proper encyclopedic standards.
We don't exactly need, or lack, information these days, we need information that has been scrutinized and double-checked and verified.
If the price is that we can't ramble on about AGS to the extent we'd like, I'm willing to pay it.

Jerakin, that's great, awesome details.
Since this is a background competition, I would recommend that you remove the sprites and characters and other non-static elements.

I'd hate to say things like "this has been done", but really...webcomics with crudely drawn stickmen and slightly nonsensical humor...it's been done so much you'll need absolutely exceptionally good comedy to make it even the least interesting.

I understand that the white in your picture represents snow, but what is the red X? An emergency flare?

Jesus, it's a plane, has he never flown before? Just eat the freaking food and stop whining.

Oh, sorry for expressing myself stupid, I mean how many we can be in total. I wasn't talking about bringing non-agsers.

I'm too lazy to read through...1.5 page of posts...so I'll ask here. Is there a maximum amount of guests we can bring?

Khrismuc is perfectly correct in the perspective model, but I hardly think the depth of the warehouse is a major issue.

Perspective-wise, my only gripe is that the white building to the right seems a bit over-sized. Scale it down a notch and it'll make more sense.

Apart from that...sky, textures (not generated such, but manually painted, thank you!), details...but you're definitely on the right track.

Yeah, leave your number here and we can call you.

Actually, I'm slowly moving from unconfirmed to not-so-unconfirmed-anymore.

I've already notified my summer job that I won't work that week (that's a salary of $25/hour with paid accommodation and free meals, so I hope mittens 2009 will be worth it), and I don't think money will be a problem if I start saving up now.

So, it looks as though I'll make it this year :)

How about you exercise your right to move in there, and behave like scumbags? Maybe that'll speed up the process.

It would have been a really impressive finishing shot with you and your mother, completely exhausted, running out of a sea of flames.
lol, oh, Andail, be quiet and make another Tulles World already!

Woah, I didn't see that coming.

This discussion has taken an unproportionate amount of thread-space, so I'd like to settle it for now.

Loominous, I have a very hard time understanding why this is such an issue for you.

When you went to art class, were you never instructed to take different - sometimes very demanding - paths to reach the end product? Sometimes you painted negative space, sometimes you were restricted to using only the palette knife, sometimes the reference image was turned upside down.

In the same sense (since you used the football allegory yourself, and said how it would suck if your goals suddenly didn't count for no apparent reason), a football coach might, during a training session, instruct the players as follows: To practice passing, they will advance towards the goal in pairs, make two square passes and then shoot at the goal. Imagine that one player persisted in shooting directly at the goal without passing first, claiming that "a goal is always a goal" and ignoring that there is a pedagogical aspect involved.

My best art classes weren't about everyone trying to achieve as impressive a painting as possible, using their favourite technique (and then compare the results); they were about being challenged, brought out of balance, and then grow from there.

As for the future sprite-jams
We have to try to be objective here, and see to the interest of this community and the setup of competitions. We can only implement so many activities, or the entire board will be dilluted. Just because you think a particular aspect of a competition appears to be missing, and deserves a competition of its own, doesn't mean there will be a healthy amount of participation in that off-shoot over time.

I definitely think that the open nature of the sprite jams is enough to cater for every possible technique and genre over time, but not each time.

As a moderator I would like to end this discussion for now, and simply encourage the future winners to bring variation to the jams, but not resort to some kind of compliant "just paint your favourite picture!" to appease as many as possible.

Now, give room for other debates in this thread. If you can't stand the rules in the next jam, please just refrain from posting and wait for the next one. Or better still, challenge yourself and enter anyway.

MarcusBugger:

Pick out some images that you are pleased with, convert them to PNG (no BMPs) and use this to upload them. Once uploaded, copy the address and use the img tags to publish the screenshots, like this:
Code: ags

[img]your address goes here[/img]

Remember to include at least two screenshots. Good luck!

I just find the puzzles where ordinary tools are employed just as they're designed in real life a bit boring.

After all, establishing a completely mundane and realistic game "universe", filled with real-life emulating puzzles, often results in very strange challenges. As a poster said above, if everything is so realistic, why doesn't he just buy the necessary items in a shop?

Of course, one could have a setting that doesn't feature normal cities with normal economies, and many games do take place on deserted islands or locked basements.

But still..."use screwdriver on screw"...I dunno, it's not my idea of having fun.

Well talking about adventure AGS ROcks. but to make RPG RPG MAKER its a lot better.
AGS RPGS: 2,3,4...
RPG MAKER: 3241 (extimated)

HOW MANY RPGS WOULD RPG MAKER MAKE IF RPG MAKER WOULD MAKE RPGS?

Clue: it's an extimated number

However, the world, and the universe, can be manipulated. Ever heard of Group Theory? Ever heard of the Hundredth Monkey Effect?

[snip]

I hope that all made sense.

Well, not really. Group theory is a mathematical theory (useful for talking about how to solve a Rubik's cube, among other things, but nothing to do with manipulating the universe) and the hundredth monkey effect does not exist, according to the Wikipedia article. So I'm afraid I don't see how they are at all relevant to the point you were making.

But if you combine Group Theory with the Hundredth Monkey Effect, you get the Effective Hundredth Monkey Group, a terrorist organisation that will eventually blow up the world.

Flame-baiting - and publishing the results - is such an extremely cheap way of creating "comedy", and seems most of all like an effort to get attention.

"OH YOU WANT ME TO SEND YOU TEH MONNEY?? OK HOLD ON!!"

* fifty emails later *

"OOPS LOL I DON'T HAVE ANY MONEY!!"

You didn't only waste the scammer's time, you also wasted your own. And the viewers'.
