Which makes it even more depressing reading that Andail has limited the resolution to 320x200 for the 'standard edition', in what I guess is an attempt to pander to the disgruntled pixel crowd. Wonder if these practices will ever leave these forums.

Oh come on, there are restrictions in many activities, it's a way to add variation to them and make people try on techniques they might not be familiar with, all in the name of practice. We're here to practice after all, not just produce excellent art.

Again, I have to say the results from this workshop are astounding, but there's no need to bear grudge towards other activities that differ in outlines or deal with other techniques.

We have to accommodate for all sorts of artists; lo-res and hi-res, but we don't have to do it each time, always. There's room for both.

Thank you and please move on now.

EDIT:
Re-opened to allow for participants, and only participants, to actually publish their results.

All right, we (I) have decided to split up the blitzes into a standard edition and a deluxe one. The standard edition will be just like the ordinary ones; two weeks duration and preferably no C&C; just submit and vote. Obviously, you should still motivate your decisions.

(Loominous can still run the Deluxe version whenever he wants, and the two will run parallel.)

Allright, here comes the new bi-weeky Background Blitz Standard Edition.

BIBLICAL SITE REVISITED

This is not a background; just a picture for your inspiration!
Basically you pick a scene from the bible (or possibly another famous religious scripture), and pretend that a modern-day adventurer comes across it today. There should be an element of anachronism involved. Either the site itself has adapted to a modern environment, or the adventurer has travelled back in time, or similar.

Restrictions: any resolution, any amount of colours.

We close this activity 2 weeks from now, no delays.

This has been a very educational activity, and I can certainly envision a regular workshop-thing going on parallel to the ordinary background blitz.

If you take your time and look through the progress displayed in this thread you can really learn something from each and every picture, and furthermore the results are extremely good.

Dualnames, you don't need to yell at people or pretend you own the place.

However, to speed up things and accommodate for the more casual forumites, let's wrap this up and fire up new activities. I suggest we install one ordinary background blitz, and let Loominous start a new background workshop whenever he feels like it.

I'll give you a day to display your results and then we'll consider this round over.

So you're saying you're happy you haven't tried it, or you're happy even though you've not tried it?

I'm very very happy because I haven't tried it.

How do you know that's why you're happy? Maybe you're happy for another reason?

I'm extremely open-minded when it comes to these issues. As long as sex is consensual and doesn't involve minors or animals, then hey, whatever floats your boat.
I can easily understand that the missionary is too repetative and unimaginative for many people. And besides, if you have a sexual desire to be tied up and whipped, it's not your fault, we can't exactly decide what we get turned on by.

Then again, having a constant wish to be dominated seems to me, even when I try to be liberated, as a complex psychological issue involving shame, guilt or bad self esteem. Maybe just prejudice...

Joking aside, it was truly a great effort, considering how hard it is to pull off a film project like this. 30 mins of finished film requires an enormous amount of editing. And it turned out very professional in the end. The most apparent flaws are the bad lighting (which is hard to achieve without proper studio lamps) and the voices, which are too soft and often drowned by background noise.

The acting exceeded my expectations by miles, and many of the "actors" are really photogenic. Layabout was great to watch (maybe you should start cleaning tables near hollywood and see what happens?), Grund suited perfectly for his part and Davy with his original style and talk really made for an interesting side kick.
CJ was absolutely hilarious, Blazej and Dominika made a perfect free-spirited artsy couple and even the Dutchmen played their parts great.
Perhaps Eric pulled off the greatest acting feat, and his comical contribution really made the movie worthwhile.

Impressive work, all of you!

Was the horse injured during the recording?

I'd also advice against threads like this one. Eventually they'll turn just as cumbersome as any other directory, since people's tastes vary so much.
Usually they'll just end up praising games that have already enjoyed praise and attention sufficient to reach even the most ignorant newcomer to the genre (like BB's mentioning of Blackwell).

Besides, if people really want to find good games, they can just browse the database and ignore the lowest-rated games.

The only redeeming factor of this thread is that Jet mentioned Tulles World, which I am as grateful as I'm surprised to learn about.

It's good that you're being helpful, Lionmonkey, but the thread you're replying to is almost 4 years old.
So, no more thread-digging please :)

(Just wanted to throw in a warning here that Lionmonkey performed a 2.5 year dig-up, so while contributing to this thread may provide food for thought, it's probably not very useful for the initial poster.)

So typical...the mitteneers are so worried they'll miss out on interesting forum discussions that they take down the forums while away.

Guys, unless you can steer this thread towards either something more on-topic or at least more entertaining, I'm locking it.

The Swedes have sucked so far. Considering that we're on the 7th position in the all-time medal chart, our current 56th place is a just a farce.

Our only real victory was that CAS has cleared Swedish wrestler Abrahamian's name, and warned FILA for being unfair.

Not that I watch the olympics alot, but it's satisfying when justice is done.

Aw, I so regret missing this year's mittens.
Next time I will make sure to be there come hell or high water.

Jesus, people, stop spoiling the game.
I don't know if you're being jerks on purpose, but it's really easy to insert hide tags in your posts. Or just avoid giving away the ending all the time.

Thank you, Gypsysnail :)

I'm still using my old - and slightly worn - Trust 6x8 inch tablet. I'd buy a smaller Wacom one but haven't got around to do it yet. If you're on a really tight budget I'd totally recommend Trust, but I've had some various compability issues with different computers, and sometimes I've had to download drivers in a special order, or install them and restart in a special order, etc, before everything works properly (pressure sensitivity etc).

The tablet pen is used in basically all situations except if you would draw up alot of straight lines or something else not necessitating free-hand drawing. Typically, you'd have the mouse nearby and swap between them like a hairdresser swaps between the scissors and the comb; in a very quick almost subconcious gesture.

I still work only in PS because I simply know it better, but I intend to learn Painter one day since I think it can emulate different media better (oil, watercolour, etc) which can really help when putting paint on large surfaces.

The general idea when working with a pen tablet is to start out with large (often assymetric) brushes with low opacity, then work your way to more details by decreasing brush sizes and increasing their opacity.
Good luck and be sure to show your results!

General Discussion / Re: Star Trek
Sun 03/08/2008 14:40:38
That's exactly how I feel about Star Trek. A technical problem of some kind occurs that I not only don't understand; nobody can possibly understand it since it's made up and thus impossible to relate to.

Also, all the other species from various planets and whatnot look exactly like humans, except for some extra wrinkles on the forehead. I mean, use some freaking imagination when you design your aliens.
#1918
please hold my hand, somebody
#1919
The technique is nice, kind of old-school comics, nice sketchiness and shading. The only major issue is the head, anatomically speaking. It's too big, and kind of skewed strangely. Eyes and nose too large and too high up. Hard to explain, I could redraw it later.
Good job anyhow :)

Nice photos!
CJ looks slightly more manly than I'm used to seeing him. Then again, Scotch has turned slightly more girly, so it evens out.
