Your new background is a bit hard to criticise, being very "specialised" kind of...

The style itself good, it's 100% more functional for an adventure game than your previous piece.

You have a good, simple composition, clean shapes and a nice colour scheme.

This kind of style requires very clear lines, near-vector quality, so take your time to clean up all your stray pixels and make all the shapes and edges as clean as possible.

Also try to include some distant objects near the horizon. At the moment the lack of backdrop creates a sort of desolate, almost agoraphobic feeling. A few distant trees or similar, even clouds, can counter-act this effect.

Winter here too. Dunno why, I hate winters...

Not much to look at, just whipped up something atmospheric. It's not even much of a background, more like a cut-scene thingie...ah well :)

Are you setting a view just before starting conversations that you forget to unlock?

The funny thing is that lots of people can pull of these tricks and do it much better, but they don't claim to be psychic or paranormal. But as soon as somebody promises what he does is absolutely "real" and actual telekinesis or telepathy or whatever, then thousands of people blindly believe them.
Even though they just saw a better trick which was explained and revealed. Strange.

AGS Games in Production / Re: Dune : ghola

Tragically, both Lynch's and Cryo's depictions of Duncan Idaho are kind of off.

I think except for Idaho and obviously Paul himself (sure, Maclachlan is usually great, but Paul is supposed to be in his mid-teens...) Lynch had a wonderful cast. Leto, Jessica, Dr. Yueh, Chani, Gurny etc, are all perfect imo.

They're maybe not true to the descriptions in the book, but so full of character and charisma!

The other movies/series haven't come close to this class.

The basic shape and composition is very functional, I believe, but there are some issues.
I think they have to do mainly with interior design. The room(s) don't look very natural...for instance, those huge red chairs clash quite hard with the pink walls.
They look more like those sack-chairs a teenager would have.

The table and chairs in the kitchen also seem to clash against the surrounding interior. Wide archs and open light surfaces...I'd expect a modern little round table, maybe glass or something.

The light on the floor indicates an exterior brighter than the interior. Hence, the window should be the brightest part of the background; but the pictures on the foreground left wall are just as bright. So, the lighting conditions are a bit unnatural.

Lastly...my eyes could be deceiving me, but is the perspective 100% correct in the kitchen? Some parts look wrong.

If there are no edits done here by tomorrow I'll whip up one for you.

It's not a bad picture, but it's hardly Sierra, sorry. It's neither old pixely lowres Sierra nor semi-old handpainted hi-res Sierra.

The style is not really suitable for adventuregames, in that it's too grainy and inprecise, and rather inconsistent. Furthermore, there is no real depth, neither perspective-wise nor colour/contrast-wise. After just a quick glance I couldn't even make out it was a 3-dimensional room I was looking at.

I think you need to use references on this one, to get the basic compositions right. Build up the room geometrically and with proper perspective.

While foreground objects is commonly used in backgrounds, this one would benefit from having at least some "opening", to let the viewer into the picture.

Mine? Hm, not that I was aware of.
As a one-edition activity it might work, considering there are no similar activities currently running.

Yay another thread re-inforcing the kindergarten aspects of this community

Make it a competition/activity. We haven't had much creative writing going on there for a while, so this could be a one-off event.

Bohnito, very nice picture. It's not a perfect background, since it features sprites/characters, so people might prefer to vote for "pure" backgrounds. Not that it matters, just a warning :)

Progz, saying that something is marketable, with a potential of becoming big and sell well, is an enormous compliment.
99,9 % of all music placed on myspace and the likes will never even get close to a contract.

We really need to be less sensitive and more realistic here. People are allowed to vent their opinions, end of story. (They're not allowed to say "fuck off" on the other hand, but that's apparently another story.)

All publicity is good publicity. All attention is good attention. I remember how I posted a song here years ago and I got like two replies. I would have died to have someone tell me that it could be "big".

Jeez, really.

H2G2 is mainly funny because of the ingenious language. I don't think the comedy in those novels lies in what the characters actually do, I think it's in the textual descriptions  of them, their looks and thoughts etc. The innovative phrasings with which he conveyed pretty corny jokes, most of which only computer geeks in high school can still truly appreciate after all these years. I mean, who's actually still laughing out loud every time they hear the 42 reference?

The glory with the novels is that you can re-read them all the time; you may remember the jokes themselves, but not the language and the formulations, and they'll keep you amused forever.

The movie lacked everything I personally enjoyed with the novels.

Just make your own GUI, and have the f5 button or any other key/button make it appear.
Make one button on the GUI call the SaveGameSlot function.

Jesus, stop being so sensitive, and stop jumping on bandwagons. Someone started attacking Helm for being blunt etc, then suddenly a whole bunch of people jumped right on. Even though Evil's post was much more criticising and less constructive. MOB MENTALITY.

It is always ok to give opinions in this forum. You know why, boys and girls? Because this isn't someone's personal homepage. This thread isn't Cameron's own private myspace page. He didn't pay to advertise on this board, so he can't dictate what people may say and may not say. What people can say here falls under the regulations and policies of this forum, and please, please let us moderators tell people what they may or may not say.

As for the music.
No, it's not original, not original at all. It sounds like Jimi Henrix riffs with 60's pop melodies. But it's still really good. I've done music recording myself and I know how darn difficult it is to get it sound even decent. And this sounds really good. But it's not going to make headlines for being innovative or original.

And in the long run, aspiring artists like Cameron will benefit much more from being challenged and questioned and provoked than from being petted on his back from people who just wish to appear friendly. Learning is a painful process. If it doesn't hurt, you're not learning anything.

General Discussion / Re: Question to wretched

What is there to be discussed publically? How can we publically discuss whether some guy used a quotation deliberately or not, and furthermore, neither Wretched or Manored seem interested in discussing anything themselves.

Incidently, there's currently another thread about The hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy running in gen-gen, and I think that should cover this forum's needs more than well.

Fellow members.
The games database will soon offer more features. Along with more classifications and genres, there will also be new ratings, carried out by an "expert" panel. The old users' ratings will still be there.

We now need people for this panel. They will be handpicked from the applicants by CJ and his moderators and work anonymously on a special board, where they will rate all AGS games according to guidelines in official documents.
The members of the panel will rotate each month, kicking out the oldest member and inviting a new one. After half a year, the entire panel will have been changed.

In order to apply for this very special position, you need to meet the following criteria:

1. You must be at least 18 years old.
2. You must have been an active member of the community for 2 years or longer.
3. You must not be known to misbehave or break forum policies.
4. You must have played most games in the database, and preferably all the canonical titles.
5. You must be prepared to spend quite a few hours per week playing and rating games. Lots of spare time is essential.

If you meet the criteria and wish to apply, PM member Application (below). Applying does not mean you automatically get picked. Only apply once. If you get selected, someone will PM you. This procedure will begin after a while, to allow plenty of applications.

Thank you.

Having bright, saturated, non-shaded sprites on detailed, shaded, handpainted-esque backgrounds is a very established tradition, not only in games but in cartoons in general. It's generally considered a nice stylistic touch.
I think it works good and could add a refreshing element of contrast. In cases of clashing light conditions, one can always lower the lighting of a region.

Progz' edit is beautiful, but may prove too cumbersome to implement on a complete set of animations. It could also render the general impression a bit too realistic; a bit dull or hefty, so to speak.

Yep, George Remi was the boss, 'nuff said.

Don't feel the need to say much more than was covered in Snarky's post.
