It's interesting that an overwhelming majority of americans advocate the second ammendment with the argument "so that the government can be overthrown in case it misbehaves", while not even 50% of the americans go to vote in their elections.
So they are very concerned about being able to change their government with brute force, but no so interested in doing it parliamentarily.

I'm 26, my gal is 22, and I'm not sure I could go much lower without damn good reasons. I could possibly stretch to 20, but wouldn't even dream of going below 18.
I've done a lot of teaching in high-school, and kids there are just so immature I sometimes lose faith in humanity and cry within.

Unless you're very immature for your age, or very inexperienced when it comes to relations and sex and all that, I see no reason why you shouldn't strive to find women of your own age.

Well Eager-Mind, this is a debate about gun-control which was generated by the initial event. With all due respect to the departed, there is always room to discuss why it happened.

As an event, it's tragic all right, but it's the same old story as always - last night in Bagdad probably more people were killed. If we were to start a thread about those killings, people would probably start debating the politics around it too.

Edit:
Actually, comments like "why are we discussing guns when people have DIED here etc" seem like attempts to win moral points by completely changing subject, pretty much like the please-think-of-the-children-woman in Simpson.

If I had been killed, I'd rather have people discussing the reasons behind it and the steps to prevent it from happening again, instead of crying some fake tears and moving on without changing a thing.

We discuss this because we're concerned and want to change things.

Here's a site for people who still like to bring Switzerland into the discussion.

Darth, sorry but Boyd's points make heaps of sense here.

The 'violent tendencies' aren't going to go away if we throw out the second ammendment.
Well, they won't go away is if you pressed a magic button. However, if less people were legally able to purchase guns, there would be much less guns on the market, black or white. The problem in America is that there are too many darn weapons, your factories simply produce too many of them.

The process of lowering the accessibility of weapons will not only be some politician publically announcing "guns are hearby forbidden!", as the weapon lobby wants to portray it (in their slogan 'when guns are outlawed, only outlaws will carry guns'), but it must be a thorough cleansing of all weapons, from the streets, from the kids, from the families, from the schools.
If people are no longer allowed to buy weapons, less weapons will be produced.

The availability of firearms didn't cause these violent tendencies.  If the guy couldn't get his hands on a gun so easily (and wasn't willing to make the few easy steps it takes to get one illegally) he'd just have found another way to commit the crime.  Poisoning food, toxic gas, etc.  Imagine if he'd snuck into the cafeteria and laced all the soup with cyanide?  The death-toll could have, potentially, been FAR worse than 33 (not that this isn't horrible of course).

This sounds horribly un-scientific. Are you gonna keep guns because at least they can't kill more than around 30 people at a time?

I don't think this person was out to clinically take as many lives as possible, because then he would indeed come up with something more diabolical, something more profound, because after all big bombs are not hard to concieve in any country. You just need a lot of gun powder, or some chemical or whatever, you hardly even need a lab.
I think this guy was really really angry, and he looked at his gun, and said "I'm gonna take this damn gun and go around and shoot everybody I see until they get me. Because I'm so freaking angry." The gun was readily available. He just needed to load it and he was good to go.

I have a really really hard time imagining that, in a world without guns, newspapers would, on a regular basis, go "Extra! Another school massive-dosis-of-rat-poison-in-the-food this morning!" Do you really think people would go to these lengths, just as often as they do now, if guns were not as available?

General Discussion / Re: Lurkers

Yeah I remember the thread way back. Evenwolf started it, and attracted lurkers like a torch attracts mosquitos in a swamp.
I think it's good if everyone lurks a bit before posting, but years and years seem a long time...
anyhow, hello.

That is horrible indeed ..
Where did he get a gun in the first place?

Yeah where? Maybe he tripped over one, got one thrown at him, had one for easter present, found one in his breakfast cereal box, spat up one after having a bad burrito; yeah maybe a gun simply materialised in his hand by just holding it up in an american morning breeze.

WHERE oh where.

Thanks Mods!
Spoiler

The drawings are just meant to be hints unless you can't work out what the captain wanted from the sailor

So...any other person willing to try it out...SSH...anyone? It's a quick demo! Just give it a shot and see if you can spot any blatant errors.

Btw, Tuomas, do you in your original post claim to have nailed all countries except one (Austria)? That's quite extraordinary. I intend to test you 'live' if you show up at next Brittens/Mittens! :)

General Discussion / Re: 'Gaming PC' type 2

Most of those games play on everything from 8086's with DOS to a Pentium with Win95. Of course, without any sort of emulation, certain Sierra titles will run 'fastforward' with even mediocre processors.
Just read the minimum requirements on the original packages and try not to exceed it too much.

I never cared much for slapstick-Donald, I prefered the adventurous bold Donald as Carl Barks portrayed him.
And LimpingFish; you can't possibly say that Donald Duck hasn't been portrayed inconsistently, he's in fact the epitome of inconsistency.

As for Simpsons, I found it much more settling when Simpsons actually wasn't consistent, but returned back to zero after each episode.
When they actually started to make stuff linear - like Flanders actually continuing to be a widower and Milhouse's parents divorced - it started to feel a bit alien. However, this might introduce another aspect of Snarky's inconsistency scheme;

* we have consistency when changes in one episode are reflected in the following episode, creating a natural, chronological order (like realistic series)
* we have inconsistency when changes in one episode become "reseted" and the following episode starts from scratch again (like most of the Simpsons)
* we have another inconsistency when a certain episode does not start from scratch,  but in the same time does not feature the changes from the preceding episode. This is some sort of chaotic inconsistency that makes it extremely hard to map or organise the events and elements of a universe.

It goes without saying that a perfectly logical and chronological order is impossible to achieve in a game universe with various different game writers. The only way to prevent inconsistencies would be if the writers, in advance, "claimed" a set of changes in the plot, as well as a date in real time when the game must be released.

I was hellbent on nailing all those former Yugoslavia states that I missed many obvious.
Also, getting the English spelling right took some extra time in a few cases.
10 left when time was up.

Critics' Lounge / Re: Stream/Bridge background

Rivers always turn and twist, seemingly for no reason.

However, this has to do with the water speed and force being greater in the "outer" part of a bend. Imagine two racing cars travellling side to side - connected with a sturdy metal bar, approaching a bend. When they make the turn, the outer car must travel much faster than the inner. When this happens to the river, the friction will be greater and the water will start to dig out the material to the side.

So whenever there is just a slight curve initially, the water will always start to erode this curve and make it more pronounced, until it's eventually so round that the water will shortcut and leave the curve to remain as a little lake.

Funny how that technical geology I studied more than 6 years ago still can come in handy!

Yeah I know what you mean. He's a tad small.
Maybe this might be more in your taste?

This gentleman's armor is complete with four additional horns, an extra pair of eye-holes, one entire furnace on each shoulder and enough spikes to make a stegosaurus blush.
I dunno, just brainstorming.

Critics' Lounge / Re: Solo piano work
Mon 16/04/2007 20:12:55
I think it sounded really good in the original version. Typically you'll hear that range of frequencies while listening to the piano in a restaurant or lounge, so the slightly "thin" and bright sound is not at all disturbing to me.

RedPress' remix is, quite frankly, quite a mess of carelessly applied reverbs that completely disrupts the original nuances and sustains.

Allrightie, I decided to publish a demo of the game to get some proper beta-testing!

There is no introduction or instructions included in this version, but I figured you ags-people will pick it up as you go along :)
The pupils testing the game will have a thorough introduction as well as a dictionary available.

Please give c&c regarding the language and puzzle-design primarily, and don't focus so much on the graphics. I need special feedback on the grammar and vocabulary, seeing as this is meant to be educational...

Short background: You play some sort of diplomat who's sent to investigate why one of the admiral's ships has not yet departed. There are some problems aboard and you need to solve them!

Allrightie, let's commence the voting. You know the drill.

My votes all categories go to Neil Dnuma. Good work lad!

And instead of our main attraction, CJ himself, we've engaged Santiagarro.
#2579
Radiowaves, this isn't the critics lounge, and even if it was, you should provide more substantial feedback and try to be constructive.

JpGames, just out of curiousity, won't your game have any kind of interface? Will it just be Roger walking around on vast screens?

How much for being featured? :)

Seriously though, it looks like an interesting concept. I've always had a soft spot for corny sims :)
