Now that we have sorted out all of these obscure, cryptic date formats and food establishment synonyms, can we try to move on with the activity itself? Thank you.

ummm andail, what do those numbers mean? I'm sure there dates but could you make it more clear WHAT they mean? my guess is November 30th to december 13, but its annoying trying to decipher.

No, no, we're talking month 30, year 13, around noon in the age of the donkey.
Seriously though, I now added 20 before the year, so I hope that will clarify for everybody.

Zooty; that was quick, good job mate.

Ildu; No, sorry. It seems one week has been too short so far, and instead of just postponing the deadline, I'll set it firmly now. Sorry that you don't like the theme, but it's not really reason enough to ask to sort of get over with it sooner.

Topic:

POST- APOCALYPTIC DINER

Guidelines:
At least once in the career of a background artist he or she is asked to paint a scene from after the great disaster, war or whatever. This can be an urban or rural scene, but there have to signs of something post-catastrophic. Obviously, there must also be featured some sort of diner.

Resolution: 320x200
Palette: Unlimited.

Voting:
Give one vote in each of the following categories:

* Best Idea - The underlying idea to the background. Doesn't neccesserily have to coincide perfectly with the theme of the week, just strike you as interesting/amusing/inspiring; a place you'd really enjoy visiting within a game.

* Best Design - The style of the picture, architectural, landscape design, best mood, most evocative etc.

* Best Functionality - How well it would work when adding sprites, including appropriate walking distances, good angle for character sprites, clever walkway solutions, easily understood exits etc.

* Best Technique - How well the ideas are executed in form of rendering.

Cool, and thanks for your votes! There was lots of competition, and I actually didn't expect to win at first.
I'll whip a new comp asap.

Oh please, why do people still persist in posting links to those time-wasting sites

Okidoki, let's see.

Best idea: Have to go for Rel (although voting for her might cost me the victory:)) It's simply hilarious that a monster would concieve such a laborate plan to lure his pray.
Best design: Krysis. Very clean and nice background.
Best functionality: Seaduck- the background fits the old kind of sierra style perfectly.
Best technique: Although I don't normally fancy 3D, Renegade is possibly the one who's spent most time and efforts constructing his background.

So, by way of walk over, we will have to declare Blue4x4 the winner, although his creation is less than comprehensible.
Congratulations.

SSH, Helm is basically saying that he wants to able to fully evaluate his own self, in a Jungian fashion, partly to achieve complete control of his subconciousness, and in extension to experience the only relgious experience you can experience without being conventionally religious.
Of course, this practice requires a strong psyche, which is why he also asks for a hardening of the tool which is also his monitor. Pretty much like a Richter-scale meter would have to be very stable in order to measure an earthquake which shakes the ground on which it stands, so to speak.
As a result, he aims for gaining free will in its rawest meaning.

Personally, I'd like to be able to drink without getting a hangover.

Jet is unfortunately taking a break from the forum for an undecided amount of time.
Please elect another winner and carry on.

Please elect a winner and move on, this competition is overdue.

Well, having a fair amount of contributions to choose from, I don't think postponements are necessary.
Of course, I'd like to see Ildu's background, but he can participate next time :)

* House must be subject to perspective
* The overall composition is boring; there should be less of the quay (unless you add something interesting on the gray stone ground), more ocean and definitely more distant city.
* Loosen up the shadows. They are too defined as of now. Also, shadows are never outlined.
* Try to vary the lightness and saturation. Right now everything has pretty much the same tone. There is nothing wrong with the general colour scheme, but you need to increase the contrasts.

I think Nikolai explained it properly. These forums are not really for personal advertisement.

Although it's a flyer, it's built up as a webpage, with some sort of panel to the left and the background image to the right.
I think first of all the format is wrong. Either cut it in half, or - if it's supposed to fold - make the halves very different in terms of colourscheme, and add something important (some text or more important pictures) to the right to balance things up.

The background stands out too strong; lower the saturation by some 50%. You could also consider framing them with black borders.
The key words should be worked on a lot. They will attract most of the attention, and need to be well designed and appealing. Work out a nice font, add anti-aliasing and allign them neatly.

Well, I think it comes pretty naturally after some trials and errors. To get it all perfectly correct is very hard and not really needed; just make sure the player can maintain an overall sense of direction.

Depends on the motive. For the sake of banners or nations, I would never kill anybody.
If my life depended on it, or let's say the lives of my friends and family, I would in self defence go to any length. While being a pacifist on an ideological basis, I'm confident that I would have the willpower and capacity to stay calm and focus in the heat of the moment.

Sorry Rick, but only a tiny portion of the population gets increasingly more mature as they grow older. More people tend to grow more childish instead.

When he turns 40, the average Joe buys a sports car and a bar desk to the rumpus room, and is happy if he can watch baseball and drink beer every night of the week together with his pals, with which he exchanges stupid blondes-jokes.
Older people develop prejudices and narrow thoughts, and focus more on money and comfort than anything else.

Darth and Grund; the sense of not being able to move as you wake up is very common. When you sleep and dream, a muscular relaxation kicks in to prevent you from moving accordingly to your dreams. Sometimes you accidently reach semi-conciousness before the muscles are activated. Still in a dream-like state, your brain can build up imaginative elements that either reflect the panic of not being able to move (you dream of scary stuff happening to you while being paralysed) or construct causes and reasons for it (you dream of sinking in a pool of mud, or being tied up, etc).

It can also happen when you're about to fall asleep, which is just the reverse effect; you start dreaming before the muscles are relaxed, which can cause parts of your body to give a start or jump uncontrolled. Typically, you dream of falling from a fence or losing your balance.

That was brilliant. It's so Achtung Franz, in a way.

Bonus fact; The song that is sung while the cloud-people dance and cheer (and the leader is bleeding from his anus) is a Swedish christmas carol.
