Go to "profile", which is just beneath the banner on top of the screen.
Go to "forum profile information" and change the url to your own pic.

Paint-over:

* fixed colour scheme (the original colours clashed)
* changed lightsource
* added colour perspective to establish depth (note how the original has literary no such depth)
* shadows where necessary
* added a path to break up the big yellow surface
* some highlights

Hope it can help you, good luck :)

Well, if the windows are painted in very homogenous, strong colours, they would create coloured light. If there are plenty of mixed colours, or colours like brown or olive green, there wouldn't be much difference.

Either way, the background would gain from having most of those beams removed. Just a little haze beside the windows would do.
But most importantly, you need to add details and dirt and stuff. It's way too empty and, well, artifcial looking.

Please, this is not the foreign legion.
We've always kept a pretty liberal moderation policy, and it has worked so far.

As for n00bs, I still see points with having a list for experienced members who would consider private tutoring. I mean, if there is a general desire for this among newcomers, and if there are members who agree to mentor, I don't see why a lot of other people should have anything against that.

It wasn't a hit last time we did it, but things can change. Also, I know for a fact that there existed a few mentor/newcomer relations that worked out well. I believe last time we had the followings criteria for potential mentors:
* Above 18 years of age
* Should have one year's experience within the forums
* Should have released one game

If there are more requests for mentors, as well as volontary members, we can just put up a sticky, and the newcomers can pm the mentors themselves. No big deal.

Very promising! Gorgeous backgrounds, very impressive.
This makes ATC sort of worth all the hassle :)
#3226
That looks good to me. Hopefully even to Tuomas :)
Now go on rendering!
#3227
I just renamned myself Txarly and sold it uncropped.

Seriously though, it's a good rendering. I'd say it's a bit too tidy and clean, and also the light beams are too prominent.

sorry, CJ, but you do. Which is why I fell for you in the first place. So don't file for divorce just yet :)

There was plenty of lag in my interview, but that's because Grundi told me to use the speakers instead of the headset, for some reason.

I must say that Zooty has an excellent radio-voice, he was great to listen to.

One thing that makes our forum a bit special is that it's based on a program that requires extra knowledge, along with ideas of design, music etc.
Dunno if people would like to have a private tutor rather than publically post their problems, but if they do, I guess it would be allright in a hypothetical point of view.

Another point is that if problematic elements appear, like whenever "certain" people post pretty useless stuff in the critics lounge, the mentor can deal with it directly, so that every Tom, Dick and Harry won't have to tell their opinions and blow the whole deal out of proportions.

we tried a mentor system some years ago, but it never really caught on. We could make another attempt, I guess.

That's another reason you shouldn't make shadows too prominent :)
The characters will stick out a bit

Feel free to announce your competition here, and maintain it on a personal webpage, where you can elect winners and donate money to your heart's delight.
We can't officially implement a competition based on your personal preferences, be it financially funded or not.

If you can't take care of such a website yourself, you might also advertise for a webmaster.

Tuomas, just trust me buddy. In this case, you're wrong.
I don't know what tests you have performed, but either the design of those tests is flawed, or you have misinterpreted the result. I'd like to see them, though, to get an idea of what you're basing this incorrect idea on.
#3234
Yes, Tuomas, you're simply wrong.

I'm in a hurry right now, so I can't illustrate it.
One way to establish how four drawers would look, would be to draw a cross, where each line ends in a corner of the frame. The perspective middle would be in the intersection of these lines.
To establish the perspective quarters of the box, draw new crosses, etc.

Such a diagram would only work to a 100% if
a) there would only be one lightsource in the room
b) there would be no ambience that would reflect the light
c) the light would be very direct and strong

I mean, look in an ordinary living room, with a covered lamp in some corner. Making the shadows strong and defined might be good for some dramatic effect, but it also gives a rather upset expression. For a calm scene, make shadows subtle.
#3236
hold your horses, my friend, it's not a supernova!

I made an edit:

With two moderately bright lightsources in each end of the room, the shadow play isn't very spectacular. Be soft and gentle! Use brushes and don't rely on filters, it will make the lighting artificial and weird.

I agree with...well, all of you, in different aspects.

At first I was struck at how Loominous presented an edit that was seemingly neglectful towards the original style and concept.
Then again, in general, if you want to be able to skillfully express all kinds of states and emotions, all kinds of looks and characteristics, he is correct in the sense that you should start by pursuing perfection; the ideal. So in a training-ground perspective, Loominous is right. Looking at the finished product, his edit serves no real purpose.

To always take the paintbrush away from the student and complete his work with breathtaking results is something an ordinary art teacher would consider bad pedagogics - it would raise the overall quality in the classroom, but the individual learner might not be able to attain that level, and would possibly be discouraged to continue.
It can sometimes be hard to keep within the boundary of good tutoring, without simply becoming an "art-improvifier".

I do, in contrast to Helm, think that the incorrect anatomy of Squinky's figures really is an obstacle that needs to be overcome. If you could get the anatomy and proportions right, I believe some of the poses would seem more natural by way of mechanics.

Lastly, this is an open forum, and as an editor (even the most acclaimed one) you're not immune to c&c, Loominous. Eric has every right in the world to question your edits. Even if you disagree, you can't say that it is automatically wrong.

Disco, I hug frequently.
I hugged all mitteneers. Some were a bit reluctant, but especially Adam turned out to be a great hugger.
#3239
But Tuomas, I think Increator has a point, actually.
If Flukeblake couldn't spend some extra time on this picture, why should a lot of forum members do it?

Flukeblake should realise that there is very much he can do to improve his art without turning to an internet community. One simple thing would be to spend more than a couple of minutes on his pictures, another would be to return to it the following day to see if he can find something to improve himself.

Unfortunately, Flukeblake has a history of threads containing only these two-minutes jottings, none of which he returns to in order to improve it according to other people's advice.

My, the overall quality of this thread is sky high! Good work so far, everybody!
