Hi, Scab, and welcome to the forum. I have merged your post with this thread, which is where newcomers introduce themselves.

I don't know what the heck this is but I can't say I'm not enjoying it slightly.

I didn't really mean hardcore cheating, as in creating sockpuppets to vote for your own contribution (although, of course, that has happened in the past too, for something as trivial as a colouring ball) I meant just some lightweight cheating as in, oh, I have this background I made some months ago that noone's seen, I guess there's no harm in using it.

But it seems most people don't want a theme, since that would prevent them from using the ideas they've already come up with (even though the OROW hasn't even started yet), and much less any other restrictions, so I'll just be quiet from now on :)

Yeah, why not a theme, really? That would probably reduce the risk of people using premade material, or starting prematurely.

Announcing this early and explicitely allowing to make plans was a great gesture; now paddling back and implying that there "will be cheating anyway" makes me a bit sad.
In fact, lots of sad.

We don't have to be so melodramatic; some people are going to cheat, it's a fact of life. The question is how much they're cheating, and whether it's a big deal, and that's not necessarily the case.

I personally don't mind if this is just another "Release something" activity, without strict rules or criteria, but then I don't think it should be a competition, with a winner. We can't compare one designer who's done everything himself, within the time limit, with one who's used every cc-licensed resource they can get their grubby hands on, as well as material that's been lying around on their harddrive for years.

What, is 320x200 going out of fashion? Since this community is all about cutting edge technology and keeping up to date, and not at all about deliberately pursuing a style that we happen to find aesthetically appealing, we should immediately rectify this by making sure AGS can only produce stuff that looks good on 50" plasma screens, unfiltered.

We should also notify collectors of old stamps that we now have email, in case they're not aware of how backwards they are.

I refuse to read what some random bloke has to say about adventure games when he can't break up his text into manageable paragraphs.

But yeah, this quote
Quote
Use item A on character B. Watch cutscene. Get item C. Walk to next room. Walk to next room. Combine item C with item D to create item E. Use item E on object F. Watch cutscene. This is a script on a drip feed. Your Rubber Chicken and your Crowbar and your Can Opener are keys that unlock doors within this prison world. The doors only lead to more rooms within the prison.
says it all.
Yes, in a way you can describe adventure gameplay like that. Is it supposed to prove anything? Way better than Shoot Zombie X. Reload.

But it's up to Cat, of course.

People need to stop being so hurt about this and accept that there have to be restrictions, or this can't be a competition.

How are we gonna have an OROW if you're allowed to use precisely everything you point at on the whole wide interwebs? This whole activity will be reduced to a release date for whatever small-scale game project you might have lying around. A game jam is about everyone working on the same conditions, with the same time limit, and the same premises.

Can't draw? Use stickmen. Can't make music? Yes you can, just hum into the freaking microphone. I bet the one who makes a stick-men adventure game with self-recorded hummings is bound to win something.

Good initiative, Cat :) I'm tempted to participate with a really tiny game, just to get away from TSP for a while.

*) This means a room in real-life definition, not an AGS room.

Surely you mean the other way around? One AGS room in the technical sense, but it can be a large outdoor scene, or a scrolling maze or whatever, as long as it's just one room file? Close-ups are handled with GUIs, right? Or am I wrong?

I don't really see why we should be able to use pre-made material - or stuff made by others - since that takes away the entire purpose of OROW. With too lenient rules, this activity will be reduced to merely an official deadline for releasing the game, instead of the time period allowed for creating it. But well, I won't object.

Your parents didn't, out of fear even the fleas wouldn't stay with you.

You're as fierce as an algae, and only slightly smarter

No, we don't have that kind of censorship here.
Well, maybe if the title had featured the n-word or something truly offensive, but for "shitty", no problem.

[wouldn't it make more sense if you first responded to a previous insulter, then added a brand new one? Otherwise the rhyme would be repeated. This means Arjon has to come up with an insult that the next poster should respond to.]

You are beautiful when you are angry. :-*  I like you for that.

Thanks, trying my best!

I thought my post drawing a parallel between a person's particular religious faith and brand loyalty was clever and funny. Apparently, it was neither. :~(

This was one of your posts:
QuoteOh, Baron. As a Canadian, we all know that your religion is The Church Of Tim Horton's.

It's just that not all threads have room for comedians. 95% of this forum is pretty light-hearted, so when some people are trying to have a serious discussion, just try to leave the rumpus by the door. These debates are sometimes hard to keep track of as it is.
Thanks.

Ok, I just removed a bunch of posts that ignored the warning I posted like less than 24 hours ago.

Really guys, respect the topic of the thread.

If you don't enjoy discussing religion, there's no f-ing reason to barge in and tell everyone about it. Just pick another discussion to take part of.

Ok, everyone, let's not make this thread derail completely. From here on, let's agree not to write posts that
1. are just meant to provoke. It's basically never funny, it doesn't make you look smart, and it just ruins the thread.
2. only point out how meaningless these debates are. Yes we've all heard the paralympics analogy, and no, it's not true. If you don't personally see a meaning in debating these issues, just stay away from the thread.
3. actually belong in the Rumpus Room. Yes, posting a funny même may seem like a good way to let the situation cool off, but it just makes the thread really long and hard to follow. Go and start a thread in the Rumpus Room if you're itching to be funny.

I'm curious about one thing, so here's a question to any christian person reading.

When I look at the laws of my country - or other countries - I have opinions about them. I acknowledge that they're the result of democratic processes; social institutions, governments, societies that evolve, etc, all trying to create a functional system, but I still have opinions about them. If my country wouldn't allow gay couples to marry, I would be upset, and perhaps try to influence people and change their opinions.

When you look at the Bible, do you ever have opinions on the rules stipulated there? Do you ever go "oh, the Bible - and God - seem to say that being gay is a sin (or an abomination), but that sure sucks, and I wish it wasn't so." I'm just curious if you always agree with God, even when there's no conceivable reason for the rule to exist?

And when it comes to the claim that not believing is a kind of religion too... I'm surprised intelligent people still use this argument, because it's so incredibly illogical.

Do you believe there's a goblin in your basement right now? You can't be sure. There's no evidence he's there, and he won't show up if you ask him. However, if you told your kids he existed, they would believe you (if they were small enough). Would you say that not believing in the goblin is also a religion? Or would you say that a lack of belief is just that - a lack of belief, and not a brand new set of beliefs? Do you understand that for non-religious people, your God is just another goblin in the basement?

Lastly, I'll reiterate for the fourth time that I never said anything of any nature whatsoever about heterosexual vs. homosexual parents raising children. The only statement I ever made about parents raising children was in reference to two-parent vs. single-parent homes, regardless of the sexual preference (and it is a preference) of the parent(s) involved.

Why did you say this, then? What was the reason to argue that two-parent homes are better than single-parent homes, in a thread that debates gay marriage?

Did you you uncheck the aa box before drawing the mask?

I just want to say that I think debating the existence of a God as a whole, or where we end up when we die, is really just futile, and I've got no problems accepting that religious people believe in what they believe in (and I really dislike the kind of militant atheist type who just can't accept that people believe in stuff).

But this is different, because this is about having opinions about how others should live their lives, and moreover what they shouldn't be allowed to do. That's a step over the line, in my opinion.

Christianity has basically taken a concept that existed before them, made it a religious thing, and created a set of rules (selected from a long list of arbitrary rules, most of which they don't adhere to themselves) that for no reason whatsoever (only because it says so) excludes certain people from exercising this right. It's just absurd.

Things change, this is the freaking age of aquarius, get with the program!
