Critics' Lounge / Re: Character pixel draft

You should amp up the contrast between the white and gray, even though it's not the final color scheme, you'll want to see what impact the lines have on the whole readability of the sprite. The line that marks his armpits is almost invisible.

The side view maybe needs a bit more curvature or detail (like maybe the sleeve protruding slightly) on the left side. Right now it's just a straight line in the torso/shoulder area, which is kind of the opposite of every other part, even in the other views. Just looks a bit jarring as is, plus it will make the silhouette more interesting.

The right part of the side view is also a bit off. Either shave off a pixel on his belly, so only his pecks portrude or some other solution. Right now it's a just a patch of orange where his sleeve ends and that looks like a mistake more than choice.

Good luck and add those details and color you plan so we see how it turns out.

General Discussion / Re: Fallout 4

I rather recently bought Arkham knight, so I'm not going to buy this game at launch, but as all Bethesda titles, the game looks awesome. Plus it's good to give modders and Beth some time (a month or so) to patch things up.

Hey, did anyone else actually prefer VATS when it was untimed? Main reason why I played Fallout 3 (coming from Fallout 1 & 2) was that even though it was shooty (and I can't play shooters for beans), it had VATS, so I could just go into VATS mode most of the time and play it strategically. Now it feels like I'm going to be forced to think quick. I don't like thinking quick!
Well this might work really good also, besides it's still slow movement so it probably won't be a shock...in Todd we trust.

I always preferred VATS in F3 and Vegas, because IMO it actually connected to the weapon aim precision - when you play other FPS-s if you aim a gun correctly, you'll hit your target, while in Fallout you may aim like a pro but you are still "fighting" the numbers in the game mechanics and suddenly it seems unfair. Most of my fights in Fallout games, end up using up VATS, then frantically shooting in panic because I know that even if I aim straight at enemy at a 5m distance, I still might not actually hit it.

This all also somewhat connects to my preference of the 3rd person camera, the bloody radar always indicates enemies, so I'm nervous if I don't actually see them.

There's also Copy which offers 15gb in the free version, otherwise it's basically the same as Dropbox. You can use it as a disk (when you install it) or you can use them via browser with drag-n-drop feature etc.
I don't know about Copy, but I use Dropbox as a backup for photos I take with my mobile phone, pics get uploaded as I take them.

Google Drive is also ok, with some additional tools on google account, but although Dropbox and Copy are slow, Google Drive is veeeeeeeeeery slow.

The story/message dances on that thin line of being deep and being pretentious, but it's ok and the idea is interesting. The simplistic graphics are interesting and the music is really nice (although in the first part, the music very suddenly shifted from one melody to another and it felt a bit too sharp).

I played the first game and while it looked fine and has an interesting world and story, it's great to see it getting a smoother polish.

Good on you Firgof, I planned on making a simple point-n-click system in Gamemaker and learn more about GM in the process, but alas it seems it's going to be a busy couple of weeks at work so maybe next time.

Just today at work I was talking to a co-worker and he mentioned something I recognized as a Discworld reference...then I got into talking about Discworld and remembered how much I liked those crazy stories and how Good omens is one of my favourite books ever. I mean damn it, the man was only 66 years old...just, damn it.

I have question about an item:
Spoiler
what's the rope for? I haven't used it for anything
[close]

To be honest, the voice acting sounded a bit flat, but not really bad, but otherwise great little game.

Very nice, Pablo.

According to the website:
QuoteSTM Motor gives smooth, near-silent focusing when shooting video
I'm not an expert or anything but I'd say the STM lens has an advantage when you also want to record videos with it.
But, as one of the comments suggested, it works with T4i (which is 650D, but 60D is a paralel model to it) and newer models of cameras, because it works with the hybrid CMOS sensors (but let's not get deep into sensor technology).

I don't know about your budget Darth, but since you got the semi-tele lens in your kit already, it'd be a good thing to get something cheaper now (since you're choosing between two lenses) and save your money for when you want to buy something better or maybe even buy stuff like UV filters with that $50 difference.
Also fun is the so called "nifty-fifty", Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Camera Lens. which can open up to f/1.8 so you can do some cool shots as well.

Yep, the first Canon kits had a 18-55 mm lens. Just as an orientation 50mm is like "normal", less than that is wide angle, for stuff like landscapes, architecture, and a must for interiors. More than 50mm, especially above 200mm you enter a telelens area, this is for stuff that's far away, for example animals at a distance, football matches etc.
The thing you've got (55-255mm) is good for portraits (which are usually shot at about 135mm) for example, but if you want to make a bit more use out of it, get the 18-55mm, should be cheap.

Macro lenses are a special type of lens which are adapted so they can take in focus images that are close to the lens. Yours probably has a limit to 2m or more (if the subject is closer, it just won't be able to focus), but macro lenses can focus on a few centimetres/inches and you don't actually need that usually). Unless you really want to take pictures of bugs up close, you don't need a macro lens.

The price of a lens is usually connected to the build quality (which means sturdier materials, more sharpness and less distortion on the lens) but also to how big is the aperture. What that means is how much lens can open up, so it lets more light in. Yours probably goes down to 5.6 or 4.8, but the more expensive stuff goes to 1.8. Lower numbers mean more light can get in. Side effect of a wider aperture is that the distance in which the subject is sharp is narrower.
For example you set the aperture to F22 and you make the lens focus/sharpen on your subject, now not only will the subject be sharp but also the area in front and behind it, but if you set the aperture to F2.8, the subject will be sharp but the area in which objects are sharp will be reduced (if something is a meter behind it or in front of it, it will look blurry and not in focus).

You use 3 things to set the brightness of an image
1. ISO number (on a 60D keep it between 100 and 800, any bigger and you get brighter images but with more fuzziness on the image)
2. aperture - F11-F16 is usually okay for most uses, F22 for everything to be sharp, F8 and below for cool effects and getting more light
3. exposure time - as a good guide to avoid mistakes, when shooting without a tripod, don't go below the mm of the lens - if you use 250mm on the lens, don't use longer exposure than 1/250 of a second (for example don shoot at 1/60 of a second), because the shaking of the hand will be noticeable

Good guide is - on a sunny day F16 at 1/160s (but try test it out for best results)
- to get more light open the lens more (lower F nubmer), prolong the exposure time or raise the ISO number
- to get less light, do the opposite

If you're interested in something more specifically, ask away.

The Rumpus Room / Re: My boss is a wanker

General director told us yesterday morning (not earlier so we can make plans) that working day is shorter (because Saturday is All saints day and is a holiday of sorts) and we were working till 2 pm and not the usual 4 pm (even though I can't remember the last time I left work even close to that either).
Problem is yesterday was a deadline for some materials to go to print (and thus could not be rescheduled), but that didn't stop people in charge of giving us new spreadsheets with vital info for printed materials to leave at 2 pm (including the general director), while me and a college were working till 7 pm, including stuff they were supposed to do and pulling information from old spreadsheets.

So on Monday, we'll receive the test prints from the printers and instead of checking for any color and image setting problems, we will spend the whole day correcting info that we might have written incorrectky, because we used information that was changed or because we didn't have time to double check the numbers. And this correcting part I am certain will happen because some prices etc. were not approved (people who do this went home as well at 2pm) and similar things happened before. Not only that, my department will also be to blame if something is wrong, because we're the last link in the chain.

Looks good now, though I am a bit confused at the ratio in size between a mouse and a cat...then again it is a carton world so everything goes.

Btw that background (and the ones from the game production thread) look really good, you should consider putting outlines though, again just to fit in with the characters.

Maybe try that blue from mole's suit, something to keep with the more saturated color palette of the other characters. Also her proportions kind of lean towards realistic while other characters are more cartoony, which all kind of separates her design from the other characters and makes her feel out of place. It's a good design, but does it seem to fit that well with others?

Critics' Lounge / Re: New book cover
Wed 13/08/2014 17:45:32
Don't get offended, but I don't know how much you know about printing, so going from the ground up:
...that's not really how an entire book cover looks like when it's being prepared. Is it for a digital or printed book?
So if it's for a printed book, you should know the dimensions before designing, you need to leave some area outside of the printed area (called bleed, that take into account mistakes during cutting of the paper) and it seems like you didn't even leave enough of a margin from the edge (you don't want any important info near the edges, not only because of the cutting issues, but generally you need to leave space for people to hold the book and not cover information and also with time books get damaged around edges). Example of book covers https://www.google.hr/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=book%20cover

Now the design part:
it's kind of hard to comment since we don't know the general theme of the story collection. Also if you're selling this (and in general when publicising), be careful of the font license.

I am torn about this. Cleaning up photos and photomanipulation is a rather big chunk of what I do at work...on the other hand this looks fun.

To me it seems like the hallway would look like this from above:

Is this correct? Seems a bit weird.

I've played only Chaos theory of the "older ones" and the main difference is that the older ones are pure stealth, while these (especially Blacklist) are more "choose your approach" (although stealth is still safer).
#19
I'm currenty playing Arkahm Origins (Gotham knight trailers amde me want to finish up before that game comes out). If you like Arkham City, Origins is basically the same game except there's snow and less stuff is destroyed in the city, think of it as a big DLC for Arkham city.

Splinter cell: Blacklist is not bad, they fixed some things from Conviction, though multiplayer is very tricky get working, but when it works it's awesome.

Sounds to me a lot like "Crazy for loving you" or something like that. Very atmospheric though.
This game's gonna be very smooth and fresh.
