Grundislav Goes to a Midnight Release
So what I gather from this is that this is a Midnight Special. *parum-pum*

Oh, man, love the theme! Hope I'll find time to whip something up - been meaning to draw a public transport-related scene for a while now. :)
Well I just hope more people will have the same attitude.  :)

On my way - interior in transport

Backgrounds are not just about castles, meadows and far off planets, you have to get there...even in a game.
To be more specific - interior scenes from cabins or cargo vagons on a train, ship cabins, cockpit on a plane, inside a space pod, back seat of a bus, underground train or a tram carriage, maybe inside a horse drawn carriage as well...basically small spaces in transport locations and NOT stuff like restaurants on a ship or a bridge on a space ship etc. Look at the screenshot above for an example and feel of it. It would be very nice if there was a walking area, but space is limited and maybe cramped.

Keep the resolutions standard, but you are more than welcome to make the space smaller than the actual background (again as in example above).
Deadline is January 10th, should be plenty of time but since there's the whole NY celebration thing and holidays and such, ask for an extension if you think you're not gonna make it in time.

Hope this is challenging and fun enough for everybody. Good luck.

EDIT:
VOTING OPEN
VOTING ENDS Jan 16th!

Categories:
Idea: Was it an original/creative interpretation of the theme?
Atmosphere: Was an interesting world created? - Did the scene evoke a feeling?
Design: How well the individual elements are designed, from clouds to doorknobs.
Composition: How well the elements are combined to create a pleasing whole, and lead the viewer to the points of interest.
Functionality: How well it would work as a game background, with clearly defined entries and walkable areas, as well as a good viewing angle (this also includes introductionary shots of an area as long as a player character can be present in the scene). (this can be little more losely judged since I left the theme a bit open to interpretation I guess)
Technique: How well it's rendered (within the chosen style!), in no way meaning the more elaborate the better.

Wow, really though Misj' was gonna take this one. Thanks for the votes people.
I'll get my thinking cap on and think of something for the next BB.

I think the non 8bit version was a bit more eerie in an organs playing kind of way, while the non8bit version has kind of gothic/romantic feel...that probably doesn't make sense, but in any case I like it.
Made me think of Fearless vampire killers for some reason.

Frito, using few layers is convenient and smart, especially when you're not working on big images.
It's kind of a matter of personal preference and skill I think. More layers gives you more control and over individual effects and is a nice way of having a backup/history image available for each bigger step you made. (there's also snapshot option in history panel, but that is purely for backup and not really convenient for slight modifications and changes).

Again, this is a rather small image, when you're working on 4000x4000px at 300dpi images and such, then the extra layers will reduce the speed of things, almost no matter what machine you have.

Guys like FZD work with very few layers usually, but they're industrial level professionals.

I'm a bit late, but io Saturnalia to you all. May your crops be fruitful, your spirit free and your time spent with the ones you love and care for.

Wow, so much wikipedia, so much references...so much text. Some really nice jokes and very interesting style. Some of the puzzles were a bit confusing, but I got through.
Very entertaining.

Depends on what style you're going for. More realistic will have that kind of lining on the columns, more pixely will have the same but with dithering and cartoony style will have 2-3 shades (shadow, normal, lit).

It's kind of hard to tell what style this is, it's kind of a mix of everything right now.

Well that's a shame. But don't forget to wear 2 pairs of socks on your feet, it'll help lessen the blisters.

Trust you to always look on the bright side o' life, Anian.
This is actually one of the rare occasions I really wasn't being negative. Constructive criticism makes people better. The drawing is really good so far, certainly better than what I can draw, why not make it even better?

First of all, I think you jumped a couple of steps between the 1st and 2nd picture.
Second thing is that the hair on the left (her right) kind of has too much volume, kind of fights gravity and stretches too much on the left.

I'm not trying to bring you down, lots of problems here could be fixed in the next episodes by experience with this one. Even though I liked the atmosphere of the game and that kept me going...lots of things were very frustrating.
- things keep appearing randomly and at locations on opposite sides of where you always are and mostly without any reason so more than often I had to look at all the available locations before finding something
- puzzle logic here was very confusing
- the story, although somewhat cliche, was interesting
- the characters were ok (btw you might want to not use the word "ok" when everything else screams fantasy/medieval, maybe "very well" or something)
- the graveyard and the ruins had a really nice creepy vibe, somewhat reminiscent of Monkey island, very good job on that
- music was very nice as well
Spoiler

- the moss - I was jut a greedy adventure kleptomaniac so I took it, but is there any reason for me to actually take it?
- the blade of grass, while clever in concept, wouldn't it be better if there was for example a bunch of tall dark grass near the moat that in description would say it's a type of swamp plant with strong sharp leaves or something
- both the grave digging and the find the X in the tomb, would've have been so much more interesting and logical if there was some light indication that separated it from the rest of the background
- the brick in the wall, my first thought was the graves but I got quickly got lost in trying to count, then I thought of the bricks checked the walkthrough and still couldn't find it for 5 minutes, because I really can't count rows if the rows are messily drawn
- also for the brick, you really should change the description or something, I as a player have no indication that I am doing something, I'm not talking about the actual brick but maybe when you click on that wall change the description to "nothing interesting about that stone" or something to indicate to me that you actually put an option for meto choose...
- the mushroom search...man that was complicated, of course I didn't write it down the first time, second time I did, but still had to do some guess work

Wintermute engine has a 2.5 system built in. You put 3d space primitives and then it calculates shadows and scaling etc. for a 2d background.

Quote from: dkh on Tue 18/12/2012 00:32:53That's reserved for self-proclaimed 'media designers' here, ie. people that actually think Photoshop still runs better on a Mac in any way (which is not true - or maybe it makes them look better at Starbucks haha).
Oh, but this could be more spot on. Since we don't have a Starbucks in the country when my friends and I went to Vienna, I took them to a SB shop and each table had an Apple product or two and the guys sitting next to us were in black cardings and something and they talked about which Mac is better and how they worked on it.
Btw american coffee is crap, come to south Europe for some real italian, turkish or austrian style coffee.

There's this: http://store.apple.com/us/browse/guide/windows
And stuff like this: http://www.vmware.com/products/fusion/overview.html

Adobe suite runs on both OS and you can I think change between them files, no problem. Windows may have a cost, but Mac laptops are more expensive than other laptop brands. Check what software is essential for your work, but, no matter what Apple users say, it is mostly a matter of preference.
My impression is that Apple products to other laptops are like gaming consoles compared to PCs, they're really good for what they do because they sort of limit your options, so some things work with less problems, but if you're willing to invest some time in arranging things and don't mind adapting to stuff, then you can do far more stuff on PCs.

I used to be a sheriff deputy, and carried a glock on my hip for over six years. I have the typical assortment of rifles for hunting and plinking. I can conceal carry but I never have, for fear of two things:
I believe most situations are only escalated with guns. If someone robs me they can have my shit. If I have a gun I might start thinking thoughts and get myself in trouble.
Wearing a gun everyday, I fear I would get too comfortable and forget about it. Possibly misfiring it or leaving it laying around.
That said, I am against gun control in general. If you want to conceal carry go for it. I like my guns for hunting (which feeds my family) and I take my children out and we shoot and they learn to respect guns.
People always want to outlaw "assault rifles", and for the most part, those rifles are just hunting rifles with tactical gear on them. If you lower the magazine capacities, people will just pack more ten round
magazines with them when they do these things. If you outlaw guns, folks will just start using explosives....or some other device. And there are so many guns over here I don't think it would really work anyway.
I really can't understand how you don't realize that you and your attitude is the usual excuse for carrying guns and how small of a percentage of people you fall into.

On one side you are trained to use a gun and you are very careful about educating your children, you do use it for hunting and are aware that you have to be careful when using a gun to defend even when that would mean being robbed for instance. To a certain extent I even get the gun collecting side of it.
But do you really think other people act like that? Not really.

The other thing that gets me annoyed is the concealed part - why, do you need to surprise somebody? Do you have the urge to start a fight then settle it with a gun? That is purely idiotic. And why the foxtrot do you need an assault or an automatic rifle?! I saw a guy carrying a rifle on a rally about health WTH!? I saw people complain about why they can't carry a gun into a bar where they are really likely to get really drunk. Not to mention the street gangs and such. And I'm not even from USA or a cop, so you've probably seen worse. Were not talking people having a gun in the wilderness where an animal might attack you, we're talking about people who go and get drunk with a gun! People who, unlike you, don't really think through what they'd do if somebody comes at them with a gun and in all likeliness would probably get somebody or themselves hurt.
There's no system of control and even worse there's an illusion of control. Even in my country you have to pass a test that trains your IQ and other skills to have a permit and this is a very foxtroted country.

Just so we are on the same page, I would agree with you if the number of people who do stupid stuff with weapons was a small minority and the law was basically controlling everybody cause there's a few idiots around, but that is not the case. I also don't believe that gun control really could've helped out this incident or other shootings, but it wouldn't exactly do damage either.

Oh, lets not get into the public healthcare system, how about guns to anybody but healthcare to anybody as well. That way when you shoot somebody they take it out of your pay check.
For a few years now, USA has all this indications and symptoms of a broken society showing up on the surface, as someone mentioned, it's a first world country with third world problems and the sad thing is that the rest of the world was walking down that path and is not far behind.

Was an ice bridge in a cave with a hole in the ceiling and loads of icicles...then I tried to draw that...then I did something else:

Made in 640x480px, but thought the clear lines make it look ok smaller also.
If the snow is not enough, there's suppose to be more water inside the well and it's probably frozen.
