Critics' Lounge / Need help drawing crystals
Sat 11/04/2009 16:23:19
x1              x3

2 props I've drawn. They're supposed to be crystals sitting a on a shelf looking all shiny and pretty.

But as you can see the first one looks more like a bowling ball or a globe and the second one looks like a christmas tree. I've fiddeled around with these for a while now and I can't seem to figure out what makes a crystal look like a crystal.

Initial 6-month contract runs out in just under a month, and while they're rather happy with me working there, being an IT company geared specifically towards the real estate market turned out to be a bad decision during this economic recession. Yay.

Same boat as me I see. "Yes, you're doing a good job and fit in the compagny. But you still have to find another job, sorry about that"

Unfortunatly, me aswell since march. I worked as a software engineer usually making user interfaces and creating databases for custom factory applications. but since the recession compagnies aren't all that hot on spending money to upgrade their equipment anymore. So in lack of orders my contract wasn't extended I was working at.   :(

Using opera myself 99% of the time, it has most features onboard (things like the 'fabled' noscript) right of the bat. Also less people use it which means less a big of target for exploits, because no program is truly 100% safe.

Going back to the coloration, the right one looks alot better. But the left one could work just as good with a bit more brightness on his blue stretch suit, It is rather dark.

There doesnt seem anything really wrong with their skin tones. Left one has a nice tan, while the right one is a bit pale.

his right arm should move a little backwards while his left arm should move forwards grabbing the object.
If you do this yourself you'll notice you'll turn your torso a little bit.

*Edit*

A quick drawover just as an example; His torso turns a bit now, and I tried made him look in the direction of the object he's trying to grab.

Just a quick drawover. I tried to keep it simple enough not using many new shades, and just freehanding the wrinkles in mspaint with the draw tool. (usually the parts were your arms and legs bend, or where your shirt or sleaves end).

As for shading the face, there isn't much shade needed there. unless you're into over dramatical shading ofcourse. But for a game I think it's better to keep it neutral

Also I made her stance a bit more asymetrical and redrawn her hands a bit more freely, again without changing too much.

And lastly I upped the contrast a bit, personally I thought it looked better that way. But thats just me ofcourse.

And there you have it, this is my quick and dirty approach on how to make clothing appear less flat. Hopefully it'll be some use to you.

As per usual, I'll offer some vague tips, and then Progz is going to show up with a complete new sprite, shaded and all.
I'll admit, this made me giggle

Just bought Street Fighter 4 for the PS3. It might be 3d rendered, but it's still as old school as the 'true' 2D beat em ups. Just the way I like it.

A quick repaint. I just reduced it to 75% from the original and then just cleared the cluttered lines a bit. I also moved his left arm back.

I also did a quick jab at a shaded version. But that'll be allot harder to animate, so best leave it as it is in my opinion.

Oh, and don't buy these cheap loes about Mozilla's uber-bestness. Use Opera instead.

I second that notion

A rather blunt spoiler

It reveals the monster for those who are curious and can't wait till they can see the whole movie

And thus ends this little competition. So without further ado:

First place goes to:
OneDollar and his soldier on ice.

Second place
Yarooze and his silent hill army.

And third place goes to
Ilmion and his jetpack infantry.

So congratulations OneDollar, the power is yours! And remember: use them wisely.

somehow that makes me think of duke nukem 3d:"That's one doomed spacemarine"  :P
#216
well, technicly a single soldier is already allowed. So it doesn't need to be that big :) but I'll see on the 12th
#217
Well bugger, Im starting to believe that this one will end with no entries.
it is oh so awefully empty  :'(.

This CB's topic is: Your own personal army

Use the given outlines to create your own army.  Infantry, tanks, fortresses or giant bomber thingies. Anything is allowed, and favorably something of a distopian future setting.
I've always been a sucker for the warhammer 40k series, so I thought I'de use a few shapes which you can use to create your own little army with.

RULES
Theme:          Create your own Army
Max colours:  unlimited
Max height:   unlimited
Max width:    unlimited
-Additional-
* The outlines may be mirrored and rotated in any way or form.
* The outlines may be copied.
* The outlines may be resized.
* The outlines may be altered, but still has to be recognisable. (the altering especially holds true for the smaller pieces to make them fit)
* Extra guns or other various potentialy lethal objects may be placed ontop of the outlines aswell. Aslong as the original shape is still clearly visible.
* Not all the outlines are required to be used.

Here is an simple example for creating a soldier and what is allowed:

The backpack and gun are added, and aslong as the additives don't become domaneering part of the picture, it's allowed.

As usual bonuspoints for creativity and originality. Also bonuspoints for the use of a background.

*edit*

And here are some rewards for showing off ;)
