General Discussion / I need a favour...

...from anyone here who happens to be an amateur film maker (I know there are plenty of you about; I could name at least 3 right now). Here's the deal: as part of the first year of my A level music course I have to compose a piece of music, to be between about 5 and 6 minutes in length. It's not an entirely free composition, however, since it has to fit in one of a handful of subjects, one of which (and pretty much the only one which isn't horrible to compose for) is "Music for Television and Film". See where I'm heading with this? I'm asking for someone to send me a film (PAL VHS or CD), of about 6 minutes in length, that I can write some music for. In return you get a free soundtrack, that you don't even have to use if you don't want to. If you're interested please either reply here or e-mail me at apolloice@hotmail.com . I would prefer offers from the UK or Europe, since I can't really afford to pay the postage for someone to send me a parcel from the US or Asia, although I'm gonna guess I'm not going to be able to be too picky about this. Thanks for listening!

Wow, and there was such a big fuss on the 3rd birthday too.

Yeah same publisher, but different writer (judging by the writing style, at least) and a different slant. I have part 2 of the PC Plus series btw, but it was fairly unremarkable apart from an "AGS Showcase" featuring Pleurghburg, Odeysseus Kent and Norman Cooks, so I didn't bother doing a scan. I might be tempted to, if there's enough interest from people here.

The only company I know to have used voxels is Westwood; Red Alert 2 was their last voxel game, before they started on polygons for C&C Generals

Sure, that's fine. You might also want to get yourself an avatar, since a lot of people only look at the avatars, not the names.

Hehehe I'm going to go out on a limb and say that this guy is bullshitting. Of course, I could be wrong, but it's not like I care .-.

In the character edit screen have you set the walking view to the same view number that contains your four walk loops?

I was taking some recruits on a CCF weekend, and I asked them each their name and why they joined the CCF. One kid comes to the latter question, and sits there going "ahhh....". Since I had heard him earlier talking about being a sniper in a computer game, I said to him "please tell me it's not because you enjoy playing Counterstrike". He replied "what's counterstrike?"

There's hope for humanity yet.

Arcangel, I don't want to sound stupid here, but is there any chance you could change your nick? I just want to avoid confusion, that's all, if you're going to start posting regularly.

Beginners' Technical Questions / Re:JPG

Erm, Logan... a 16-bit AGS game saves the images as 16 bit pcx files, not 256 colours. You need to stop being so bloody rude, tbh.

I think that there should be a sensible limit on how technical the rules get. Some people just don't have a formal musical education, and to close the contest to them for the sake of being esoteric would be pretty unfair. Maybe we could say, you can make rules about instrumentation, theme or length, but nothing much more complex?

Does AGS support floating point numbers? I have a feeling it doesn't...

I think it's more of a joke against the people like you, Darth, who think that some of those things are actually good ideas.

Throw out all your crisps and biscuits, grill instead of frying, run every day. Do not go on a low carbohydrate diet (like the Atkins diet) - you might lose weight fast but after a while you'll start putting it back on. 3 months is a bit tight for a whole 20 kilos- think longer term than that. You might not even need to lose all that, it all depends on how much of your weight is muscle and how much is fat.

The definition between children's and adult's books has become very blurred. It seems to me also that most of the best authors (and by best I refer to the writing style and quality of language) are choosing to write for children as opposed to adults. Take Tom Clancy as an example. Now his books are definitely adult, but his english is, to be frank, pretty crap, and his characters are often shallow and boring. On the other end of the scale, one of my favourite authors is a man called David Almond. He writes children's fiction and afaik has three books published - Skellig, Kit's Wilderness and Heaven Eyes. Although they are most definitely children's books, due mainly to the lack of gore, the concentration on children and childhood issues and the slightly fairy tale fantasy elements, the emotional concepts they deal with are often complex and dark. Kit's Wilderness especially deals with suicide cults, evil, death, and loss; but not in a corny teenage trying-to-teach-kids-something way, but in a quite unique and thought provoking way.

Most FPS's don't use it?

Ok then, most fps's pre-2002, discounting half life.

Hmm... an interesting idea, but remember that most FPSes don't use surround sound, let alone adventure games! I don't really see how this could be useful.

1. Why do you want to know?

Either 1. he's not getting any either, and doesn't want to feel left out, or
2. he's just lost his virginity and wants to feel superior to us poor unhealthy geeks.
