The Rumpus Room / What's this website
Sat 16/08/2014 00:15:43
I'm thinking of a site I used to read a couple of years ago, I think I first came across it through the forums. It was basically a rant website where this grumpy American dude would write articles about things. One thing I specifically remember is one about The Phantom Menace. The site itself looked like it was from the 90s and the font was big*, and at the bottom of each article there was a hit counter that read something like 'X people also hate [thing article is about]'.

Anyone know what it is? It was actually really funny.

* Edit: just in case, I'm not talking about barnrunner.com

Edit 2: Damn, the name of it literally just came to me, an area of my brain must have been working in the background.

http://maddox.xmission.com

In that case, consider this thread me sharing a very entertaining website I found.

Topic: 'Sub-par Hero'

This month's guidelines were set by Ghost:

The game's main character is a superhero with superpowers. But those superpowers aren't exactly... super. Maybe they can only talk to the creatures of the sea. Or they can only turn invisibile when nobody watches. They can grow an awesome moustache... but nothing else. You get the idea: They are low ranking and they know it.

Got your sub-par hero? Now give them a chance to really shine, or at least fail in the most impressive of ways.

For references, just watch Mystery Men ;-D

What is MAGS?

MAGS is a monthly competition for amateur adventure game makers. The idea is to create a game in under a month, following the rules set by the previous winner. It aims to help you work to a deadline, improve your skills, or provide a kick-start into making adventure games. Regardless of skill, MAGS is for everyone. Voting is based on "favorite" games, and not the most artistic, or the best coded. If you have bad art skills, use it as a chance to do some graphic work. If you're sub-standard at coding, use it as a chance to give scripting a go. Ultimately, people will vote for the most enjoyable entry.

You may get help for the competition, although you must end up doing something yourself. You should however be warned that it proves difficult to organize a big team within thirty days. You are not allowed to use material already created before this competition. Your game must be completely new! Music and sound is an exception; you can use free material that is available to the public, if you wish. Modules and templates are also allowed.

Entering MAGS is simple. First, conceptualise your game following the month's criteria (see top). Second, create your game fueled only by coffee. Finally, post your game in this thread, including:

âÅ"“ A working download link
âÅ"“ The title of your game
âÅ"“ A suitable in-game screenshot

At the end of the month, voting will begin, usually lasting for fifteen days. The winner chooses the next month's theme, and their name and game is immortalised in the MAGS Archive. For more information, please visit the Official MAGS website.

Topic: 'High School'

This month's guidelines were set by AprilSkies:

Only one rule: Create a game set during high school times.

Crowded hallways packed with rowdy students, cheerleaders, leather jackets, lockers, Rock'n'Roll, prom, football games, brawls, chemistry lab...
Ok I admit that many of these words are just clichés that come from some American movies, but I guess that most of us have a nice memory of high school times: first kisses, first loves, pranks, rebellions, lightheartedness, summer vacation and so on and so forth.

Let me conclude with a quote:
The kids want a little action - The kids want a little fun - The kids all have to get their kicks - Before the evening's done
'Cause they're goin' to *High school* Rah, rah, rah *High school* Sis, boom, bah *High school* Hey, hey, hey - You better let them have their way

Topic: 'Alien Invasion'

This month's guidelines were set by Radiant:

The aliens are coming!!! As we speak, Earth is being invaded by the little green men from Mars! By the evil robots of Asimon III!! By the tentacled monstrosities of Counter-Neptune!!! Run awaaaaay!!!!

Okay, so the theme is Alien Invasion. A rather large group of strange extraterrestrials have landed on our planet, they want something, and they're willing to use force to obtain it. The player could be a random Earthling, a Man In Black, an alien invader, or something else; they could want our cattle, our water, our soap opera stars, or basically anything; and it's up to you how the situation gets resolved. If you need more inspiration, may I recommend H.G. Wells's War of the Worlds; Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game; or the classic movie Mars Attacks!

The Rumpus Room / Weird Foreign Toilet Thread
Tue 20/05/2014 03:22:43
Hi guys, Atelier here.

Now, as we all know, the world is made up of many different types of people. From continent to continent we speak different languages, wear different clothes, and have fascinatingly disparate cultures. However, you may not also know that the human race has an impressive diversity of contraptions for depositing our waste products, of both the liquid and solid variety.

I will take you by the hand (but please, don't forget to wash them after we've finished) as we look at the many different varieties of toilet out there.

Squat Toilet

This here is a squat toilet. As the name suggests, one positions themselves over it in a frog-like fashion for delivery of waste. The squat toilet is most commonly found in Africa and Asia, although they can be found elsewhere - believe it or not, the one pictured is actually in Michigan, USA!

Chemical Toilet

Found worldwide, the chemical toilet is invaluable at concerts and building sites, where there is no established sewage system. The body is positioned similar to how you would use a flush toilet (see below).

Flush Toilet

This is a typical flush toilet, and could be said to have a monopoly on the toilet world. Many of you will be familiar with the design. Some have two different power settings, which allows the user to respond to the situation in accordance with its severity.

Wow, what a fascinating variety of toilets we humans have produced! If you would like to learn more, there's probably a subreddit for this kind of thing. Atelier out.

Topic: 'Sex'

This month's guidelines were set by Krazy:

This month's MAGS theme is something the adventure game scene has been lacking ever since Leisure Suit Larry dropped off the radar (Reloaded doesn't count). SEX. Your MAGS game must be centred around the idea of naughty goings on. Whether you tackle it with silly tongue in cheek innuendo, tell a gentle erotic romance story or just address it head on with as much depraved filth* as can fit into AGS is your decision. How will you incorporate this risque requirement into your story/game? It's something we'll all have to wait and see with great antici.....pation.

* Atelier note: obviously, keep it legal.

Topic: 'Shakespeare'

This month's guidelines were set by HanaIndiana:

This month's MAGS theme celebrates the 450th birthday of England's national poet & playwright, William Shakespeare.
The game should reference his work in some way (big or small), or even star the author himself.
How you reference his work is up to you. It can be dialog, characters, story, ect...

This month's guidelines were set by Hobo:

Moustache are cool, moustache are hot, sometimes serious and dramatic, sometimes silly and queer. Male or female, bird or toaster - moustache does not discriminate, everybody are welcome to enter the competition and have a moustache good time!

It would be awesome if your game would somehow revolve around a moustache plot, feature a moustache character or a moustache inventory item, but all entries with at least a hair of moustache are accepted. Either love 'em or hate 'em - this is your moustache chance of your moustache lifetime, don't miss it!

Moustache! Moustache! Moustache!

PS: All beards and other bodily hair is also welcome, but moustache is a must(ache)!

Topic: 'Fictional Spirituality'

This month's guidelines were set by Atavismus and Peder:

The game has to include elements of the spiritual journey of the main character.
The definition of spirituality can be very personal and large.
It can be considered as the link/relationship between us/our spirit and something higher (nature/universe/creator).
It's also a matter of interior life and the link between all of us.
The game can be serious, parodical, satyrical, etc., whatever.

Some keywords: initiation, rituals, meditation, priest, book, temple.

Topic: 'Night-Time'

This month's guidelines were set by Fitz:

A solar eclipse? A curse cast on the entire kingdom? Or just an ordinary night resulting from the sun hiding below the horizon? You decide. You name the time and the place the story is set. Ancient Inca city? A magical kingdom? New Jersey! All that matters is it all happens at night -- which might be your ally (say, in carrying out a store robbery), your foe (imagine you're a small, furry creature that big feathery creatures love to hunt at night) - or a trap (if, for example, you're lost in the woods). Go! You have until dawn!

Hi guys,

Some of you may remember me working on a fantasy text game that I started a couple of years ago, the WiP title was Text Quest.  Well, I started university last week, and as much as it hurts to give up something I've invested so many hours in, I now think it's very very unlikely I'll ever be able to finish it how I envisioned it.

So, not wanting to see all that effort go to waste, I'd like to donate the files to somebody/a team who could turn it into a great game of their own. I would also be willing for somebody with the expertise to turn it into a self-contained module, or some kind of plugin if that's possible.

I've done all the groundwork so atm it's a fully functional text RPG game. I had fantasy in mind although it could be used for any genre. It could make a kick-ass detective text-game. The 'engine' includes:

- Text-drawing to a main window, fully customisable font/colours etc
- Scrollable text window at two different speeds
- Image drawing
- Perfect for a sprawling game world
- Aggressive/passive/unique NPCs
- Inventory and equipment system
- Can generate minimap and full-view map of the game world
- Randomised dungeon generator, coded by Khris
- Full quest mechanism with markers
- Followers and mounts
- Basic day/night cycle
- "Smart" text parser that has a best guess at which NPC/object you want to interact with, based upon everything in the room
- Full 'dialog' mode so you can talk with NPCs

An OLD example screenshot - the minimap appears in the top left.

The only thing missing is a combat system, but I created provisions for one such as levels, armour ratings, NPC hostility. Aside from that, it does require a bit of general tidying and bug-hunting but as I say it's playable atm - I just haven't added any rooms, quests, or NPCs!

Preferably I would like somebody who is well-known around the forums who already has game-making experience, only because I really want to see something finally come to fruition after all this time :-D

If you are interested please post here or PM me.

Thanks
Atelier

Edit: I'm surprised I forgot to mention, there are four fantastic orchestral tracks written for the game, including a main theme, composed by Jon Babb (bosa).
