Here's me when I went sightseeing to London, and on my trip to Paris last year.

I think you could do something like this.

if !(player.HasBeenInRoom(5)) player.ChangeRoom(5);

Damn. I could have sworn that function existed D:

I'll stake my claim to a third of the booty!

Wow! I love games in this style. I'll certainly play this later and tell you what I think.

I hereby proclaim mode7 as winner of MAGS November. Congratulations!

Because opt-out would be much more convenient than opt-in, both time-wise and management-wise.

in your opinion, in the face of global war most people are cowards

No. My assumption is that the vast majority aren't cowards, so everybody is automatically signed up. As for the pacifists, un-fit, or whatever, their appeals will be judged fairly and accordingly.

So in your opinion people don't have sufficient abilities to properly regulate any aspect of their lives by themselves? By nature they are insensitive cowards with no control over their sexual urges?

That's some extremely pessimistic view.

Um... seriously Ascovel? When did I say or even imply any of this?

Edit:

what about people who fall in love and two years into their blossoming relationship find out they are brother and sister?

Khris, sex and love are completely different things. Of course I wouldn't make it illegal for siblings to love each other, but I believe when it escalates into inbreeding it's just wrong on many fronts. It's been proven scientifically countless times. On the extremely rare occasion they don't know their connection, there's not much you can do.

If I stared a game on the 30th my time but the 1st GMT that would fall under this theme, would it be eligible?

Sure, the more the merrier. Thanks for the interest guys, I have a feeling this will be a good one!

10%? really?

Well apart from the fact it's not a very in depth set of questions, it's simply the way I interpret them.

"Government should not censor speech, press, media, or internet." I disagree. Obviously there are some lines which the media shouldn't cross. Say for example a TV station started broadcasting radical material. Nobody would be able to stop them.

"Military service should be voluntary. There should be no draft." This one was a maybe because press-ganging is simply wrong; but on the other hand, saying no draft full-stop means that in times of global war, we couldn't summon the men which we would need.

"There should be no laws regarding sex for consenting adults." I disagreed with this. The key word I picked out is no laws. I believe there should be at least some restrictions, against incestuous relationships for example.

Topic: 'Discovery'

This month's guidelines were set by Tabata:

The protagonist has to discover a strange place which is completely foreign and unknown.
For example, Lucy discovers the land of Narnia when she steps through the wardrobe.

Ideas to help you:

• How does your character make the discovery?
• What is their reaction to this unknown place?
• Are they scared or happy to be there?
• Do you have to help them escape, or even help them stay?

Good luck, and may I take this opportunity to wish everybody a Happy Christmas! I honestly love you all.

Ending 31/12/2010 (but people will be too smashed to realise lol)

What is MAGS?
MAGS is a monthly competition for all amateur adventure game makers. The idea is to create a game in under a month, following the rules set by the previous winner. It aims to help you work to a deadline, improve your skills, or provide a kick-start into making adventure games. Regardless of skill, MAGS is for everyone. Voting is based on "favorite" games, and not the most artistic, or the best coded. If you have bad art skills, use it as a chance to do some graphic work. If you're sub-standard at coding, use it as a chance to give scripting a go. Ultimately, people will vote for the most enjoyable entry.

You may get help for the competition, although you must end up doing something yourself. You should however be warned that it proves difficult to organize a big team within thirty days. You are not allowed to use material already created before this competition. Your game must be completely new! Music and sound is an exception; you can use free material that is available to the public, if you wish. Modules and templates are also allowed. Please do not enter the competition with a rushed entry (a game created last minute). Sure, you can make a game and rush it - but don't do this just to win by default.

Entering MAGS is simple. First, conceptualise your game following the month's criteria (see top). Second, create your game fueled only by coffee. Third, finally, and most importantly, post your game here, including:

✓ A working download link.
✓ The title of your game.
✓ A suitable screenshot.

At the end of the month, the all-important voting will begin! This period usually lasts thirty days. Should you win, along with announcing the next month's rules, your name and game will be immortalised in the MAGS Archive. Yet hopefully, at the end of the month, the accomplishment of finishing a game will be your greatest prize. For more information please visit the Official MAGS website.

This was a neat idea Babar. It actually works! It's interesting how most of the results are in the same quadrant.

Updated chart.

Personally, I've never heard somebody say "all of them didn't get the lecture", it sounds so clumsy. At least, on its own:

• "John, Joe, Anne... all of them didn't get the lecture."

This sounds a little better if you define 'them' beforehand, as it were. Whereas with 'nobody', its already defined in itself because it means absolutely zero people.

• "John, Joe, Anne... all of them got the lecture."

This sounds correct. So, it seems that as soon as a negative is involved like in the first example, it sounds odd. =S

It depends what the verb is I suppose. Change your A/B example Khris so you use a different verb.

• Person B knows Person A is not talented.
• Person B does not know Person A is talented.

In the second, it only implies an absence of knowledge, and cannot be read two ways. Therefore these sentences are complete opposites.

• Person B wishes Person A is not talented, (he does not wish A is talented)
• Person B does not wish Person A is talented, (he wishes A is not talented)

On the other hand, these two sentences are identical. If it's stated that he does not wish something, he must wish it, and vice versa; neutrality can't be assumed if the feeling is already created and stated. This is just philosophical rather than lexicological.

Be grateful it's not your hair I guess. :)

Phew, that's good news. mode7 is awesome! =D

As there was no winner last month, for MAGS December I'm lacking a theme. So I'll open it up to the forumers to help me out.

The first person to PM me some guidelines will get theirs featured.

You may set up next month's guidelines at your leisure. You may want to set a general theme, or offer a bunch of items that should appear in the game. Maybe think of some actions or functions that need to be included. Bear in mind, it should more or less fit the adventure genre, and obviously, must be kept clean. Please confer with recent MAGS rules, to avoid obvious repetition. Earlier competitions may provide some inspiration if you are stuck.

Guidelines received.
