Probably one of the more niche threads, but has anybody else come across Crookes Radiometers?

Mine just arrived in a massive parcel and it turned out to be the size of a mug. Still, very interesting to look at. I love collecting interesting curios, physics/executive 'toys', like the Newton's cradle, storm glasses, etc.

What curios do you have laying about?

Topic: 'Cross-country'

This month's guidelines were set by granary:

Is this a sporting event or a road trip? It's not clear. What is clear, though, is that somebody is going somewhere with some sense of urgency.

Basically, create a game focused on a journey and a physical destination. Maybe it's a high-speed race, or maybe just a vacation. Pick a place to be and let your imagination fill in the details. The location could be modest and personal, such as a favorite childhood hangout, or it could be something on a larger scale, like the moon. The character doesn't even have to ultimately arrive at their goal, as long as they try to get there.

What is MAGS?

MAGS is a monthly competition for amateur adventure game makers. The idea is to create a game in under a month, following the rules set by the previous winner. It aims to help you work to a deadline, improve your skills, or provide a kick-start into making adventure games. Regardless of skill, MAGS is for everyone. Voting is based on "favorite" games, and not the most artistic, or the best coded. If you have bad art skills, use it as a chance to do some graphic work. If you're sub-standard at coding, use it as a chance to give scripting a go. Ultimately, people will vote for the most enjoyable entry.

You may get help for the competition, although you must end up doing something yourself. You should however be warned that it proves difficult to organize a big team within thirty days. You are not allowed to use material already created before this competition. Your game must be completely new! Music and sound is an exception; you can use free material that is available to the public, if you wish. Modules and templates are also allowed.

Entering MAGS is simple. First, conceptualise your game following the month's criteria (see top). Second, create your game fueled only by coffee. Finally, post your game in this thread, including:

âÅ"“ A working download link
âÅ"“ The title of your game
âÅ"“ A suitable in-game screenshot

At the end of the month, voting will begin, usually lasting for fifteen days. The winner chooses the next month's theme, and their name and game is immortalised in the MAGS Archive. For more information, please visit the Official MAGS website.

Looking good Fitz!

I'm sure you and Stupot know already, but just in case, don't forget this month's MAGS ends on the 3rd Sep, so you have a week today left!

I have been informed that my phrasing could be interpreted as being a bit harsh.

Really? It wasn't even remotely harsh or acerbic, I don't care what you fuckers think of me anyway (<- real harshness) :-D

Seriously though, somebody simply misunderstanding the true meaning of ironic doesn't make the sentence as a whole 'useless'. We don't understand language in a mechnical manner whereby a minor error nullifies the majority; you can still understand what foreigners speaking in broken English are trying to convey, for example. If somebody appends 'isn't that ironic?!' to an anecdote and it isn't, well, you'll just think to yourself "no it isn't", and that's that. Nobody's going to die from that mistake. It doesn't need to be fixed so every single word in the sentence is perfect, and therefore you can finally understand them.

Edit: I am just talking about the 'ironic' thing here, obviously some minor errors can be catastrophic eg "cut the blue wire" when you meant to say "cut the red wire". But 'isn't that ironic' falls into a category of things where an error with it's usage is so trivial in day-to-day life it's just pointless to challenge people on. "I wrote a blog" is also another perfect example - yes it's wrong and they should be slapped, but you still understand what they mean so...

I'm struggling to understand why people would even care about somebody on the internet being wrong. As long as you personally speak and write English correctly, what's the big deal?

"Baby, baby, baby, ohh
Like baby, baby, baby noo
Like baby, baby, baby ohh
Just shout whenever, and I'll be there"

And who can forget blink182's bewitching wordsmithery:

"Shit, piss, fuck, cunt, cocksucker, motherfucker, tits, fart, turd, and twat (x4)"

The Rumpus Room / What's this website
Sat 16/08/2014 00:15:43
I'm thinking of a site I used to read a couple of years ago, I think I first came across it through the forums. It was basically a rant website where this grumpy American dude would write articles about things. One thing I specifically remember is one about The Phantom Menace. The site itself looked like it was from the 90s and the font was big*, and at the bottom of each article there was a hit counter that read something like 'X people also hate [thing article is about]'.

Anyone know what it is? It was actually really funny.

* Edit: just in case, I'm not talking about barnrunner.com

Edit 2: Damn, the name of it literally just came to me, an area of my brain must have been working in the background.

http://maddox.xmission.com

In that case, consider this thread me sharing a very entertaining website I found.

The month there is no MAGS is the month the Four Horsemen will appear! http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=50809

Congrats to granary - you're the winner of this month!

Topic: 'Sub-par Hero'

This month's guidelines were set by Ghost:

The game's main character is a superhero with superpowers. But those superpowers aren't exactly... super. Maybe they can only talk to the creatures of the sea. Or they can only turn invisibile when nobody watches. They can grow an awesome moustache... but nothing else. You get the idea: They are low ranking and they know it.

Got your sub-par hero? Now give them a chance to really shine, or at least fail in the most impressive of ways.

For references, just watch Mystery Men ;-D

General Discussion / Re: Coin Collectors?
Fri 25/07/2014 23:58:05
I collect coins in the sense that I keep interesting foreign coins, but I'm certainly not a coin collector :-[

Something I would like to know - does it depreciate the value if you polish coins? I've heard something about polishing coins in the past but can't remember whether it's good, bad, or a neutral thing to do. I'm thinking of old coins no longer in circulation, but I suppose it applies to anything really.

Edit: also, I assume there is no market for foreign currency that is still in circulation? So the value of such coins is literally just the exchange rate?

Puh-lease, if anyone knows where this is located, send me the address.  Better yet, meet me there with a lot of beer and asparagus.   :=

Well, peeing in a likeness of Bush is one of the weirdest fetishes I've ever heard of, but live your life how you want to dude.

I'm afraid I don't have access to the website files - the host can only add entries/guidelines and change the info. I think Peder is your man for that, although a new MAGS site is in the works, so changing the old one might be low priority.

Also, I've just started a new job, so I'll probably have to start Maggies on the weekend.

Here's a creative and convenient TP hanging idea.

Hmm... another flaw is, it's not hard to imagine some circumstances where you don't know how much paper is "live", ie how many sheets you'll rip off. If the live section is hanging vertically without any user support, any subsequent user input may cause another unwanted sheet to dispense into the live section. Industry experts have known about this problem for years.

Edit: more importantly, why is he sitting there with his trousers on?

I couldn't read the rest of the Chocodile article, is it me or is this sentence wrong? "Chocodiles /ˈtÊÆ'É’kɵdaɪlz/ was a confection created by the Hostess Brands company."

Should it not be were? Please advise.

Half-way through people! Any interest?

Also, I have cleared the backlog, so the MAGS site is now once more up to date. I'm planning to start MAGGIES 2013 in the next couple of days, if not today.
