Topic: 'Something Cold, Something Burrowed, Something Pink'

This month's guidelines were set by Captain D, selmiak, and Emont:

The game should have COLD as a major feature of the game in whatever way the game authors decide; the main element of the game should revolve around something that happens under ground (BURROWED) (be it the turtles or beeing buried alive or a cave adventure or whatever the author comes up with) and the color PINK should have an important role too.

Ending 31st January

What is MAGS?

MAGS is a monthly competition for amateur adventure game makers. The idea is to create a game in under a month, following the rules set by the previous winner. It aims to help you work to a deadline, improve your skills, or provide a kick-start into making adventure games. Regardless of skill, MAGS is for everyone. Voting is based on "favorite" games, and not the most artistic, or the best coded. If you have bad art skills, use it as a chance to do some graphic work. If you're sub-standard at coding, use it as a chance to give scripting a go. Ultimately, people will vote for the most enjoyable entry.

You may get help for the competition, although you must end up doing something yourself. You should however be warned that it proves difficult to organize a big team within thirty days. You are not allowed to use material already created before this competition. Your game must be completely new! Music and sound is an exception; you can use free material that is available to the public, if you wish. Modules and templates are also allowed.

Entering MAGS is simple. First, conceptualise your game following the month's criteria (see top). Second, create your game fueled only by coffee. Finally, post your game in this thread, including:

âÅ"“ A working download link
âÅ"“ The title of your game
âÅ"“ A suitable in-game screenshot

At the end of the month, voting will begin, usually lasting for fifteen days. The winner chooses the next month's theme, and their name and game is immortalised in the MAGS Archive. For more information, please visit the Official MAGS website.

General Discussion / Re: The Hobbit II
Tue 24/12/2013 17:44:11
The Hobbit was way too unrealistic for me. Yeah I know "but it's a fantasy!" yet even fantasies shouldn't exceed the framework of the world it's set in. Eg everything in Lord of the Rings or GoT is believable if you accept the basic rules of the fantasy world. But I'm pretty sure the hobbit and dwarves wouldn't survive a 10 million foot drop inside the goblin kingdom, and that chase scene was way too action movie-ey, and there was a genuine WTF moment when I saw that messenger on the string that the goblin with the deformed ball sack on his head speaks to. I also hated the whole White Orc subplot, not withstanding the CGI for it just looked so out of place for some reason. And in the trailer for Desolation of Smaug I saw Thorin jump about 10 feet into the air off a cliff, that would never happen.

I was hoping to see something in the same vein as the LotR but it turned out to be a dumb children's movie (the scene where that hedgehog called Sebastian dies actually made me angry). At least PJ stayed faithful to the text as it's essentially a children's book anyway. As a massive LotR fan I still hated it though.

The text for thread titles is noticeably larger now. Is this intentional or a mistake?

Anyway... may I ask why is it taking so long to proclaim the winner? Has there been issues in the voting?

Nope, voting usually lasts 15 days. However, I may post the results later today!

Topic: 'Rebirth'

The year is almost over, but that also means a new one is just around the calendrical corner!

This month, make a game all about something old/at the end of its 'life' starting anew. Think fresh starts or reinvigoration.

• A family move away from their old life in the city to a strange village
• A bear emerges from hibernation in the spring to find everything has changed

Ending 31st December

Topic: 'Night-Time'

This month's guidelines were set by Fitz:

A solar eclipse? A curse cast on the entire kingdom? Or just an ordinary night resulting from the sun hiding below the horizon? You decide. You name the time and the place the story is set. Ancient Inca city? A magical kingdom? New Jersey! All that matters is it all happens at night -- which might be your ally (say, in carrying out a store robbery), your foe (imagine you're a small, furry creature that big feathery creatures love to hunt at night) - or a trap (if, for example, you're lost in the woods). Go! You have until dawn!
