It is both impossible to predict what happened before the Big Bang, and meaningless to talk about it anyway; at the singularity, the laws of physics did not apply, meaning anything that happened is inconsequential and had absolutely no effect on how our universe is today. So it can be taken completely out of the equation. miguel, that is why most people say there was nothing before the Big Bang.

Do you hear that sound? I think it's the gong signalling 'just under two weeks left'!

Haha :P I'm coming out the tail-end of exams at the moment, so won't be able to complete my entry (for a second time)

Science is neutral, obviously. In my post I was only discussing those few words alone, 'building a bomb is neither good nor bad', without even referencing science.  Actually, even in context of whether science is good or bad, I still don't see why building a bomb can be considered ethically neutral? Indeed, science really has nothing to do with the statement.

Miguel:
Building a bomb is neither bad nor good. Using the bomb is what matters.

I'm really unsure about this. Once created, bombs go nowhere, do nothing else, only until they are detonated and kill people. The person who makes it essentially contains that result within the casing, postponing it - nobody builds bombs just because they can - there's a clear goal to making a bomb, it only has one purpose. Building is not the same as using it I know, but by the actual physical act of creating a bomb, the ONLY thing you are doing is directly increasing the capacity to kill other people (even if the bomb is not used, the bomb's 'potential' is brought into existence, when it did not exist before), I think does have some unethical flavour to it as well.

My [unfinished] story from last time fits this theme too! Would I be allowed to enter it? Or does it have to be completely new?

For me, rather antithetically, one look at the complexity of the universe makes me reject any form of organised religion. In fact, the religious explanations of why we are here are quite frankly insulting to the real beauty of it all. Just go to an observatory or read a book on evolution. Can it honestly be given justice by any of the stories written thousands of years ago, when we knew so little compared to now?

Quote
NORSE CREATION MYTH
Odin and his brothers first fashioned the earth (Midgard) from Ymir's flesh and, using his eyebrows, encircled it with a protective wall. Using Ymir's unbroken bones, they created mountains and from his teeth the rocks, boulders and stones. Using Ymir's blood, they created the sea and lakes. Using the dead giant's skull, they created the endless expanse of the sky and supported its corners with four dwarfs.

How ridiculous does this sound in retrospect? (At least it's 10x more kickass than modern day creation stories). And yet people had faith in it indistinguishable from people who hold religious faith today. What makes it any different from Christianity, Islam, Judaism? The answer of course is bog standard social influence, and which norms adapt or become extinct. Instead let's tell people that no words that man has ever written or said can truly represent the fact that such an awesome universe exists in the first place!

Anyone else think Facebook is evil?

Look I mean wake up guys please. Look I can PROVE BEYOND DOUBT Mark Zuckerberg is the worst kind of Reptilian and not only that..... the Devil.... Ok he was born in 1984. Btw NOT I repeat NOT a coincidence, Think Orwell chose a random year? Well guess again because Big Brother is actually him (and he is also a Devil) and Mark Zuckerberg has 14 letters, right? 1984/14 = 142. Mark has 4 letters in 142x4 is 568! Now Facebook has 5 founders (aka Summit of Elitist Evil) and Zuckerberg has U in it the 21st letter of the alphabet. We take off 1 from that cos thats how many countries there will be when Zuckerberg gets his way. So 5x20 = 100 Now the 568 from earlier + 100 = 668........... scarily close to the Devils number........ when I first saw it I was scared too..... Seriously people WAKE UP!!!!!! Repost this to everywhere you can!! Zuckerberg must be stopped!!!!!

Dawkins doesn't really strike a chord with me: you can't really argue against faith with rationalism, because they don't really exist on the same spectrum.

This is exactly what Dawkins thinks you can do, he discusses this in The God Delusion: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-overlapping_magisteria#Criticism (2nd paragraph onwards gives a nice summary).

Is it against the rules for two people to work on one project?

Nope! It's happened many times before :)

I'm glad to see there's already a lot of interest!

There was a glitch earlier with the voting system. If you tried to vote but couldn't, it is now working again.

Topic: 'Old, New, Borrowed, Blue'

This month's guidelines were set by Ghost:

"Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue" - create a game that, just like a proper wedding, has these four things as plot-significant elements (not just a throwaway hotspot). No further specifications; "old" could be anything from an old car to leftover food to a really old crusty pirate, and so on. No genre restrictions or special themes either, it's just about including four things that match the saying.

Ending 30th June

This month's winner was Witchy Woo by Myinah and Soxbrooker.

What is MAGS?

MAGS is a monthly competition for amateur adventure game makers. The idea is to create a game in under a month, following the rules set by the previous winner. It aims to help you work to a deadline, improve your skills, or provide a kick-start into making adventure games. Regardless of skill, MAGS is for everyone. Voting is based on "favorite" games, and not the most artistic, or the best coded. If you have bad art skills, use it as a chance to do some graphic work. If you're sub-standard at coding, use it as a chance to give scripting a go. Ultimately, people will vote for the most enjoyable entry.

You may get help for the competition, although you must end up doing something yourself. You should however be warned that it proves difficult to organize a big team within thirty days. You are not allowed to use material already created before this competition. Your game must be completely new! Music and sound is an exception; you can use free material that is available to the public, if you wish. Modules and templates are also allowed.

Entering MAGS is simple. First, conceptualise your game following the month's criteria (see top). Second, create your game fueled only by coffee. Finally, post your game in this thread, including:

âÅ"“ A working download link
âÅ"“ The title of your game
âÅ"“ A suitable in-game screenshot

At the end of the month, voting will begin, usually lasting for fifteen days. The winner chooses the next month's theme, and their name and game is immortalised in the MAGS Archive. For more information, please visit the Official MAGS website.

Well I have a couple of paragraphs already, I'll try and finish it off before tomorrow. But it will be poop.

Cleanic, Jaffles, anybody else: there's just a few days left to polish your entries!

I tried something like snippet 2 to begin with but it doesn't seem to work - you either get a string of 9s or 0s after the 1st DP.

The first line is great though, I'm losing precision anyway when I chop off the rest, so it doesn't matter too much about perfect rounding :)

Thanks Khris!
