Fuck. Wasn't it obvious that MAGS threads are created only by one person? Admins, please don't lock it, please delete it so there's no confusion.

Topic: 'You, From the Future'

This month's guidelines were set by Duzz:

The topic is not limited, but the protagonist must meet their future self at some point in the game.

Ideas to help you:

• You give yourself advice on a tough upcoming decision.
• Your future self brings news.
• You won't tell yourself whether you hooked up with the woman of your dreams!

Ending 31/10/11

What is MAGS?

MAGS is a monthly competition for all amateur adventure game makers. The idea is to create a game in under a month, following the rules set by the previous winner. It aims to help you work to a deadline, improve your skills, or provide a kick-start into making adventure games. Regardless of skill, MAGS is for everyone. Voting is based on "favorite" games, and not the most artistic, or the best coded. If you have bad art skills, use it as a chance to do some graphic work. If you're sub-standard at coding, use it as a chance to give scripting a go. Ultimately, people will vote for the most enjoyable entry.

You may get help for the competition, although you must end up doing something yourself. You should however be warned that it proves difficult to organize a big team within thirty days. You are not allowed to use material already created before this competition. Your game must be completely new! Music and sound is an exception; you can use free material that is available to the public, if you wish. Modules and templates are also allowed. Please do not enter the competition with a rushed entry (a game created last minute). Sure, you can make a game and rush it - but don't do this just to win by default.

Entering MAGS is simple. First, conceptualise your game following the month's criteria (see top). Second, create your game fueled only by coffee. Third, finally, and most importantly, post your game here, including:

✓ A working download link.
✓ The title of your game.
✓ A suitable screenshot.

At the end of the month, the all-important voting will begin! This period usually lasts fifteen days. Should you win, along with announcing the next month's rules, your name and game will be immortalised in the MAGS Archive. For more information visit the Official MAGS website.

As for oct, I plan to make it interesting now that I have the "power" ;)

You'll be setting the guidelines for November, it works in a staggered system :)

Congratulations icey! It's a shame there wasn't more of a competition but you won nonetheless :) Sending you PM shortly.

Hopefully MAGS October will be more of a success!

Calin's words turned out to be strangely prophetic. I changed my mind so count me as an advocate for new forum software. But not just for the sake of it. The broken calendar (which Duals has been reminding us about for god knows how long), search function, and two days' downtime showed it would be a good idea. And not necessarily immediately. Incidentally what happened to the shiny new website, that was awesome!

though I want to roll this out someday. :(

Good :)

Right then. We have one entry, any other takers, or is it a default win?

Guess what. A timeline of your life. To a paranoid and cynic like me that's just sinister... I'm beginning to wonder how much Zuckerberg sold his soul for. Or at the very least how much the elites are asking for it.

Hear me out: external web trackers, automatic tagging through facial recognition, comprehensive work, education, and location history, and algorithms to tell you who you talk to most often. Out of context these are terrible concepts! Nah... under the trusted guise of Facebook the average person doesn't realise how much sheer power the company wields.

I heard that in the USA some companies are actually microchipping their products now. It's only one more step (chipping humans) until they can log literally everything you've ever bought, make physical money redundant in place of virtual credit, know everybody you come in the proximity of; and hidden chips in public places could give realtime coordinates of your location to a central server.

That kind of dystopia is possible (I'm definitely not saying its probable); however if you do need tangible proof just google Alien Technology (company). It epitomises the companies with malevolent agendas: NWO/globalist or authoritarians/extremists... the various motivations are irrelevant but the actual power these genuinely trusted companies has is scary. If that blog is true, and they get a timeline of your life, for me that's a blatant show of compiling your life into some kind of story. Then I'm out of there before they know what I'm going to eat before I do.

Everybody loves choices!

1. Write about a scientific or technological breakthrough that would change life as we know it. You've probably heard recently about the developments at Cern.
2. Create a shape poem. To make it easier you could post it as an image, using monowidth fonts, or however else you wish. Any subject. Examples:

3. Write a story with the protagonist as any figure from history. The scenario can be of your choice. Mother Teresa goes on a booze up for example.
4. Write a proper gritty action story. Brawls, guns, rooftop chases, and epic one-liners (avoid clichés; "any last words?" "say your prayers" etc. Exceptions made for any lines uttered by Clint).

If one or more of the above takes your fancy you go do your thang gurlfryend!! Ending Monday 10th October. I'll do trophies if I get time.

Can I do it? Please?! I was on suicide watch for at least a week after I lost.

If you're a proofreader isn't your job to proof read? Why are you repetitively taking the mick out of somebody who clearly needs help with their script? It was slightly humorous at first but after a quadruple post it's just lame.

PS: This is just a little taunt. If it ignites a haters contest I'll be pretty upset (that means I will insult people and shake my little fists).

Wow.

Oh damn wasn't that... Sherlock Holmes?

Edit Ok that was a ridiculous guess I'm going to hide now

Yeah, I looked for alternatives for Text Quest (after I started creating it with AGS), then after nothing turned up, I realised I had coincidentally already found the best program for my purposes. There's so much scope to do what you like, and the built-in parser is obviously really handy too (however I'm still waiting for parser folders :P)

Here's a screenshot of my own project. I guess this is what you're after, rather than just pure walls of text? Anyway if you do decide to stick with AGS I'll gladly share a variety of code if you need it :)

Wasn't there also a carnival on in Dresden at the time? Which makes it more... tragic, if the word fits.

My favourite thing about Hitler is that he drastically reduced unemployment in Germany, established Volkswagen, his paintings revealed talent, and he was a gifted orator. Also Mein Kampf is an extraordinarily interesting book.

It's a shame his passion and charisma were misguided from the onset, as he could have done great things. He turned Germany into a phoenix which rose from the ashes of WWI. Anyway the symbols of Nazi Germany are still somewhat sinister, (rightfully or not, as endless pages have discussed prior), but no they won't always be. The World Wars will never be forgotten but yes over time their relevance to the modern (or future as the case may be) world will be increasingly less. Perspective: 1066 is still a famous date in England but no grudges are held. I only dislike the French because they don't know how to form queues. I cannot WAIT to party at Pevensey on the 1000th anniversary lol.

It's difficult to compare an isolated invasion to a whole world war, but that's the point, we don't have any reference points, WWII being the most cataclysmic war in human history. In 1000 years, will the symbols of Nazis be taboo? Or the things they did? I don't think so. Right now though it's acceptable for them to be - it's still modern history and scars still remain, in memory, culture, and the Cold War was spawned off Nazi Germany's defeat, which is more evidence the echoes of WWII are still very much present. A phantom of the war in the Pacific is that Japanese babies are still being born deformed today. Seriously WHAM you're a funny person who's made a couple of awesome games but you could afford to be a bit more tactful - not many people would think of anything other than Nazism when you use the terms Sieg Heil or 'final solution'. And btw the latter term is actually an official Nazi term, coined by the Nazis:

Quote from: Wikipedia
the German Nazi leader Adolf Hitler termed it "the final solution of the Jewish question" (German: die Endlösung der Judenfrage).

So. Hitler takes a lot of the wrap but cannot be entirely blamed for WWII (obviously he was ultimately instrumental in it occurring). Don't forget the Nazi party existed and held anti-Semitic views long before Hitler came into the scene (and Jews weren't the only ones persecuted - black people, homosexuals, gypsies, spastics). Nope, it wasn't solely Hitler's fault. It was Himmler, Goebbels, Heydrich, von Schirach (an interesting one highlighting indoctrination), etc... etc... etc... right down to the person pouring Zyklon B into the hatch, right down to the common Kraut with the gun. The women and children too? They definitely didn't pull a trigger. Oh wait... the boys probably did on Hitler Youth camps. The children were too young to know any different - or just parroted their parents' views. My point is, anybody who says that a baby in a cot is responsible solely because their father is fighting must be joking! Sure, they would have grown up to fight just like their father, or been brought up to be a good house-wife just like their mother, either way believing it is for the good of the Father land. But in no way are they responsible for decisions that had been made before they were born. Let's extend that shall we? In no way should anybody feel personally ashamed of the war, wherever their parents/grandparents allegiance lay.
