Congratulations WHAM!

If you're wondering why it took so long, the votes were teetering all the time but in the end WHAM won with a slight average. Congratulations to Pinback also, for his beautiful looking game.

Now then. You won't be receiving a PM as usual, because I had to make room for this month's RoN MAGS. So watch this space for your special prize (but don't anticipate it ;))

Next year I have a bold business venture. Honest Atelier & Co, place your chips on The Journey Down II for 0 awards, 500:1! Pull a few strings behind the scenes, suave dazzler, tip em some dirty paper, catch em sly, proper job with bundles in the duffle.

It's not been a problem for me. I know they recently removed direct linking if you haven't signed up... lucky for me I have a nifty work around ;)

(which I won't post here because if imageshack found out they'd do something about it D:)

By that logic, they might as well legalise theft and leave it up to the individual to say "Woah woah, back up.  This belongs to somebody else." as opposed to "Wait, I shouldn't take this... it's illegal!'

It's all a matter of having permission from the other party.  If you take an item from someone without their permission, then there is a victim.  It's theft and it's illegal.  But if they give said item to you they have no right to call themselves a victim and no crime has been committed.

This is a good point but here you're detailing a direct physical crime, and comparing it to adultery which causes only emotional trauma (except STDs etc). No, it's better resolved between the people involved; otherwise it would be like the Jeremy Kyle show, except Jeremy wears a wig and at the end of the show he gets to decide how many years the husband will be eating porridge. When things get direct, such as theft, the law should intervene and resolve the issue.

Also anian chats a lot of sense.

I think adultery should be illegal to protect those who would be hurt

I understand this, morally, but Khris hits this one on the head. If we made this illegal, "mobbing, verbal abuse, sarcastic commentary by pundits, pranks, political satire and countless other things" should be outlawed too. It would be a playground situation brought to the real world, where you have to stay inside doing lines (or in this case, doing time) because you got with your mate's girl behind the bike sheds.

And it's nasty messes like that which a law would serve to prevent.

I can't really imagine the scenario. In the heat of the moment the man breaks away and says "wait, we shouldn't go any further... it's illegal!" As opposed to "woah woah back up I'm married!" To be honest, I'm skeptical with any law making an overwhelming difference to frequency of x crime.

I am unsure where I stand and would like other, more worldly, people's opinions so I can put this idea to rest in my head.

I know you wanted to start a moral debate, but, first I must address the religion involved in this question (which is inevitable)... after all, the common definition of marriage is holy matrimony, which is different to marriage outside a church (only bound legally not spiritually).

You could then go as far as asking: what would be the difference in each case? Both are unions under a contract. Both are breaking a contract. So the punishment that applies to adultery in a non-religious union must also be identical to the punishment for religious union, regardless what the Church has to say about it.

If you were to punish everybody buying Cornetto's, you wouldn't punish the person who buys the strawberry worse than the one who buys the mint... you simply punish all people buying Cornetto's, they committed the same crime!

If people commit adultery, hopefully it's their own problem and will rest on their conscience. We don't need prison sentences to tell people they did wrong (well, in 90% of cases it seems). Even if they have no qualms about it, the government should be in no position to actually punish people. It's for the parties involved to work out between them, by going on Jeremy Kyle or something.

Also, when you hear about cases such as Wayne Rooney or Ashley Cole or 'celebrities' like that, it makes me mad how there's no blame placed on the female involved (probably because the media are too grateful to the woman selling their story). They are in my opinion equally responsible, and if any law should be passed, they must also be accountable.

Recently RoN celebrated its 10th anniversary. What better way to celebrate than a special edition MAGS!? There is none! (Except cookies).

Topic: 'Celebration'

This month's guidelines were set by Renegade Implementor:

The theme is open but must include some sort of celebration (be it holiday, birthday, or anniversary).

As well as this, the game should also be either:

• Set in the RoN town itself, or somewhere in the surrounding area (such as the beach or forest).
• Set in another location (eg park, cave, launderette), providing the main character(s) are existing RoN characters (think Roadtrip).

Bottom line, your game must feature a celebration of some kind, and have one of these connections to the RoN series.

Resources:

The RoN site provides a wealth of resources (backgrounds, sprites, history) to help you get started. You are allowed to use any of these, providing you end up doing something yourself.

• Characters!
• Backgrounds! (ddl)
• Character sprites! (ddl)

Alternatively, you could create your own graphics based off these resources. Quite frankly, why bother?

Good luck to everybody, and happy birthday Ron ;D Before I forget, here are some cookies.

There's not enough to go around so please share.

Ending 31/3/2011

What is MAGS?

MAGS is a monthly competition for all amateur adventure game makers. The idea is to create a game in under a month, following the rules set by the previous winner. It aims to help you work to a deadline, improve your skills, or provide a kick-start into making adventure games. Regardless of skill, MAGS is for everyone. Voting is based on "favorite" games, and not the most artistic, or the best coded. If you have bad art skills, use it as a chance to do some graphic work. If you're sub-standard at coding, use it as a chance to give scripting a go. Ultimately, people will vote for the most enjoyable entry.

You may get help for the competition, although you must end up doing something yourself. You should however be warned that it proves difficult to organize a big team within thirty days. You are not allowed to use material already created before this competition. Your game must be completely new! Music and sound is an exception; you can use free material that is available to the public, if you wish. Modules and templates are also allowed. Please do not enter the competition with a rushed entry (a game created last minute). Sure, you can make a game and rush it - but don't do this just to win by default.

Entering MAGS is simple. First, conceptualise your game following the month's criteria (see top). Second, create your game fueled only by coffee. Third, finally, and most importantly, post your game here, including:

✓ A working download link.
✓ The title of your game.
✓ A suitable screenshot.

At the end of the month, the all-important voting will begin! This period usually lasts fifteen days. Should you win, along with announcing the next month's rules, your name and game will be immortalised in the MAGS Archive. Yet hopefully, at the end of the month, the accomplishment of finishing a game will be your greatest prize. For more information please visit the Official MAGS website.

Monsters are misunderstood. It's exactly this kind of talk that gives my kind a bad name :-[ Before you all get human-supremacist on my ass, why don't you try living in a universe with five dimensions? All we ever want is to make friends, well how can we when we're always ostracised like this!

Some attitudes you have make me sick to the core. Sometimes I feel singled out, just because I may be blue, and have more than the average number of limbs. And I only know like one of my monster friends (we call him Henry Halitosis) who has bad breath, but that's only because a rotting child is caught in his throat. We have much better oral hygiene than you make out, and indefinitely better table manners.

And why do we shout and scare people? Because living in five dimensions is painful.

It's here guys!

My idea was set in the future, when Great Britain is detached from the sea floor and it sails around the world!

I smell an Oceanspirit Dennis game in there somewhere!  :=

Perhaps you're on to something. But I hear Square Penix has got a secret project in the pipeline just round the U-bend!

My idea was set in the future, when Great Britain is detached from the sea floor and it sails around the world! I even made some graphics for it.

Anyway my vote goes to Diath.

Just a few days left now. Stay tuned for a special edition MAGS March!

The Elder Scrolls IV landscape sucked greatly. In fact you could say it sucked more than a Dyson DC11. The landscape was boring and uninteresting because everywhere was the same; horizons were repetitive, and there was only one species of tree.

Bethesda made an algorithm which saved them lots of time, because they didn't have to create everything by hand (bearing in mind it had about 4000 square kilometres to explore). This may have saved them time but it did more damage than good, because the surroundings lacked originality and were blatantly computer generated.

There was no attention to detail. It was supposed to be a fantasy world but I didn't see anything magical in it. This is a good case of the landscape not reflecting the essence of the game.

As far as I understand Bapu is a targeted game looking at the good things he's done. In which case (seriously), I'm looking forward to 'Bapu 2: A Dark Look at the Life of Mahatma Gandhi'. That would keep the yin and yang in check.

Atelier, that is GORGEOUS! This might be the first ever text adventure I'll ever play! :D I wish you the best of luck! ;)

Cheers, I'll need it if I'm ever to finish the damn thing.
#958
Sounds like a good idea to me. If you like, somebody PM me and we can arrange some guidelines for MAGS March.
#959
Ben, I have a question.

When will you propose to Calin?!

This is the funniest thing I've ever seen.
