Best Idea: Ildu. And very nice bg to boot

Best Design: Neil Dnuma. Just wow. There's a lot of depth in that bg. And it's got great atmosphere.

Best Functionality: Nihylist. Definitely. Simple, to the point, and easy to work with and play in. :)

Best Technique: I'll have to reserve judgement on this one. I just can't decide between Sektor and Neil. I LOVE Sektor's bg style and the way everything just seems so real, but I'm a big fan of Neil's atmospheric style. I just can't vote for one against the other. Nice work on both.

A small campsite, just a lean-to and a fire pit.

I would love some of those classic Sierra sprites. You could post them in my email inbox.  ;D ;)

Love the dog, progz... And lmao, that goat monster is great Kinoko!  :D

My second contest entry ever, and my first sprite jam. :) Hurried a bit due to procrastination....

And on the other hand, amusingly enough, if you want to see good "love tension" ;), watch The Empire Strikes Back. Excellent, excellent interaction there. For a Star Wars flick. It's more the arguing, head smacking kind of love though. :)

Thanks for the input so far. I appreciate the suggestions and will likely use some of them.

QuoteI don't think the second room is bad, but it would definitely need some objects in it, right now it is so empty it seems almost pointless.
Well, it really serves only to introduce a semi-major character. :) Other than that, it serves only as a passage to the main sections of the station.

QuoteCongratulations on using gradients quite effectively. Certainly creates a lost in space, forlorn kind of mood.

Thanks! That's what I was going for.

And I'm glad you pointed out the light thing. It was kind of bugging me but I didn't know why until you told me. :)

For these, yes. It just didn't look right for the mood when I tried other colors. These bgs have been drawn in bluish, slightly off-brownish, in lime green, and a'la spacequest. Okay, so they were never lime green, but the ony thing that really seemed to fit was the depressing gray overtone. Everything else just inspires too much hope. :/

Besides, I have blinky lights and colorful piping. :)

What colors would you suggest? I am certainly open to ideas.

Dude! You have fulfilled all of my life's fantasies!!!

er.... I mean all of them concerning this subject... yeah...  :-[

Seriously though, this rocks. Your bandwidth id MINE!!! ALL MINE!!!! Bwahahaha! If fonts were larger, I'd put you in the hole.  ;D

The trunks on those trees are a lot better, imho. Tops could still be a lttle larger in general, especially on the trees toward the bottom. And maybe fill in the bit of sky peeking through on the left or move it up a bit.

Good pics, though. I like the castle pic. Brings back memories of 8- and 16- bit goodness. :)

In my neverending quest to avoid character art, I have made a couple of bgs. Both of these are for a prison space station and they are sequential. Nothing in particular bothers me about either one, and I especially am happy with the cell, but I figured since I still consider myself to be learning a lot of thing I would post them up here and see what you guys think.

And, yes, I know the viewpoint is different for these. I planned it that way. :)

Cell: There will be an animated sprite in the doorway which will obscure most of what's behind it.

And outside the cell. This is an animated background. The lower right is the cell you came from and the upper left cell will have an animated sprite in place of the static animated force fields of the other doors so that it will be easilly removable. There wll also be a door in  the left hand doorway. Obviously. With this bg, I have two versions. Can't decide which one to use, although I think I like the second one better.

soften the sidewalk texture as it get farther from the POV. The area of the sidewalk behind the building in the foreground looks out of place and draws attention from other things.

Really, though, I like the style in this pic. And it looks better, in my humble amateur opinion, without a lot of lighting.

DOH!  :o

Missed the explosion part. ;D I have selective reading (as opposed to hearing) :)

Like this? That certainly looks a bit different, at least to me... wow. :) amazing that such a simple adjustment could change it that much.

Not being that great at spriting people or anything else that lives (I can draw everything else but people and animals, for some stupid reason), I wanted to appeal to some of you really good character artists out there to see if you could give some advice based on this ugly template. I have read many tutorials on the subject, but I learn more by studying actual works than trying to work directly from theory, at least in this area. So, without further ado, my crappy character template :) :

What I really need here is crit on the proportions, mostly. Something is off, I think, and I can't quite figre it out correctly. Maybe it's just that it's outlined in black, I dunno. The template is total width/height of 50x70, as that is the size I will need for my game.

Any help is appreciated as I am sort of stuck at my current level of suck in this area. :)

The "bespectacled man" ROFLMAO! I have no idea why that amuses me so, but it does. I've liked Yahtzee's games since Adventures in the Galaxy of Fantabulous Wonderment. This appears to be just as excellent. :) Thumbsup, Yahtzee ;D

I will be madly partying my butt of as I.... sit around the house. :) Will probably end up playing Rubies of Eventide around 2 or 3:00 with a buddy or maybe AOE2. Wow. I'm exciting, aren't I? ;)

In all probability, though, my night of boredom will be interrupted by the yearly ritual of rescuing a bunch of people I know from numerous different parties at whih they will be very drunk. Now THAT'S excitement. Knowing that one false move, one wrong word could bring about the complete, humiliating beating of one of your best friends by someone slightly less drunk with a much less developed sense of humor. lol

It's a little small, but you can still see everything come together.  ;D

This is what happens when Murray plays ball with his devious little friend HAL and the ball goes out of bounds....

Resized it so you could see it a bit better :)

The left wall looks a little dark for any light to be coming from the window. Even just a little light with a high angle would put at least a little illumination into the room past the midpoint. All the other light indicators are high up on the walls and right in the middle of the floor. Maybe sort of smooth out the spot on the floor (make it a little more gradual) and extend it toward the window and it will give a better indication that there is more light coming from there.

Really, though, I don't have a problem with it at all, I'm just saying. :) If I ran into this bg in a game I would never notice or even think about it. It's a very good pic.

Team-based space shooter/strategy game: http://www.freeallegiance.org/

Source code was released by Microsoft, the old community picked it up and ran with it. They are very close to releasing their own version of the old Allegiance Zone (from the Zone run by MS) soon.
The attitude is fairly intense at times, and a lot of people give up before they give it a chance, and the game isn't for everyone, but if you have the ability to not take yourself or other people very seriously at times, then check it out. :)

Rubies of Eventide A good little fre mmorpg. It is small, but the community is quite large. Nice people, good game.
