Is there any way to find a video of Dave Gilbert's presentation on how to write efficient dialogs with fewer words? I'm supremely interested. I've found that I completely lack that skill.

Thanks Mark too for all your hard work!
Thanks for coming Joey, I really wanted at least a few interactive fiction talks. I'm sorry I had to dive out of your talk, I hope someone filmed it so I can watch.

Are there any videos yet?
I don't think so but Adventure Treff filmed a load and were taking lots of pictures. I didn't take as many this year as my phone was acting up, but I got to play with my tablet and take some nice dioramas (laugh) I will try to get those up asap

If you want a digital copy of the schedule on your phone's calendar ( Save paper!!) then I made one in google for that very purpose:

You can simply scan the code above on your phone or download it directly from:
https://www.google.com/calendar/ical/3nk51nf94regibbqeefjpk2qd4%40group.calendar.google.com/public/basic.ics

You'll download an ics calendar file which most decent phones and tablets should read. It will then copy the events to your calender. I don't think it updates so keep an eye out for updates at the event. If I have time and things do change I'll try to keep it up to date, but this should be good reference.

There's also an HTML link
https://www.google.com/calendar/embed?src=3nk51nf94regibbqeefjpk2qd4%40group.calendar.google.com&ctz=Europe/London which will take you to the Google Calendar page.

They should get their toshes up to AdventureX, see you already commented about that. Good job (nod)

Today I realized that in the tile-based platformer demo code, the comments actually indicate the exact logical inverse of what the code is doing. This aside from the bugs I've had to fix in the code (allowing the player to fly irreversibly off the top of the screen, and a rounding error resulting in negative zero) really just strengthens my distaste for the program. Inconsistent indentation styles, inconsistent use of operators, inconsistent and occasionally incorrect code documentation, obfuscating a simple operation like rounding a number by using bitwise operators and not explaining why... With this kind of "quality" demo, it's easy to see why people love GameMaker so much.

Ok that's good then, I know a few people who graduated entire courses and were still using it :-X

Slightly concerned that a degree program has you using Gamemaker tbh. Make sure you have stuff made in a more robust engine before you graduate. Hope you find a solution to your collision woes.

General Discussion / Re: New voice microphone
Mon 17/11/2014 08:14:24
I agree you don't need onmi directional for voice acting, it's useful if you're podcasting as you can record several people around it but for VO it will pick up extra background noise. Also if you want a sub £100 solution I'd go for USB as a conventional 3.5m plugged into an onboard sound card is usually not that great for all the reasons Gurok's mentioned. I recommend any of the Blue USB mics Snowball ( basic) and Yeti ( slightly more expensive) both have onmi modes if you do want to podcast  but you can switch to single direction for VO. Just make sure you look up some tutorials on how to use them if you've not used a good mic before, the yeti for example is  " Side address" so you need to make sure you talk into the side and not the top!

How about you link the mic or give us your budget?

It is creeping up on us. Reminder to everyone to start checking their travel and accommodation plans!
#53
Yeah that is some great art

It's south from Kennington so outer in my book ^_- but yes prices should be a bit cheaper than the hotels near the old venue.

haha well my friend found some that put him off, but actually it looks OK? will leave it for AGS people to decide ;)

We've not updated for a while so I thought I'd give an update. The end of Summer release date was a little optimistic, but we're hoping that the game will be playable from start to finish in the next week or so. Which I guess will mean our first Alpha build!
I did a playthough of what we had so far during our last meeting, making what I hope are final dialogue edits. Among a variety of small edits, I fixed the line on that screenshot and tidied up one of the puzzles. Backgrounds are now all finished.

Once the game is playable from start to finish we'll do some more playthroughs then the aim will be to lock dialogue down. This means we can give Matt the final animation list and he and Steve can finalize the layout of some of the more complex in game cut scenes. We'll also sort the final audio ( music, SFX and VO) ready for beta.

( we're also updating the screenshots so keep an eye out for those)

Also in case anyone is wondering the title came from a game name generator.

I'm really excited about this game! I remember you talking about it at AdventureX so it's really cool to see some new screens!
