i actually used to run a pc with two soundcards, one ISA SB16 compatible, and an SB128pci, when i was in windows the SB128 would get used, and when in dos the ISA card was used, even in a dos window, so technically having two cards is possible...

well, not all mp3s are just ripped from CDs, some people make their own, you only have to make them OGG if you intend on selling your game UNLESS you wanna pay the people that own mp3 compression thingamydoodas...
but if your game music is midi then you might aswell leave it as midi...

have you tried going into Edit, then Audio Properties (in sound recorder this is) and setting the preferred device for recording to your soundcard?
also, if you go to Audio Properties in windows, and take the microphone off of mute and set the volume (if the microphone bit isn't there go to Properties and enable it) and then speak, do you hear anything?
try setting the volume to max and leaving mute off, then try recording again, or try some other recording software or software that lets you use a microphone and see if it works then...

if you have a device such as a midi cable or joypad, or even joypad attached to a midi cable, disconnect it and try again, i had the exact same problem when i had my midi cable plugged into the soundcard and my joypad attached to it, when i disconnected the joypad from the cable, the microphone worked.
if it still doesn't work your soundcard might be bolloxed...
