General Discussion / Re: London 2012 logo
Sun 17/06/2007 16:42:52
the logo should be a rain cloud, it's gonna piss down during the olympics just like it did when they had the commonwealth games in manchester.
and i thought the 5 rings was already the olympics logo...
and £400,000 is about right, the UK is pretty much notorious for the outrageous amount of money it spends on new logos.
they really should just hold a national logo design competition, i'm sure they can get a hell of a lot better designs in 5 years.

i'd like to see this and/or a way of controlling the cycle speed. perhaps it could be done in a similar way to how Unreal and other earlier 3D games that can handle 16/32bit colour deal with textures; they're limited to using a 256 colour palette, that way you can set the palette values for the items individually. or something.
oh yes, it would also be great if colour cycling didn't get blocked.

i dyed my hair blonde last year and continue to do so (although i haven't done it for a while and it badly needs doing), it was a bit strange at first but then i and everyone else got used to it and you just forget about it, and if you don't like it you can always dye it back to your natural colour.
the only thing is that i haven't cut my hair for over a year and dying long hair calls for more dye and it's harder to do your roots, plus your appears to be a darker colour than mine was so you may have to bleech it first.
and just for fun here's what it looked like before dying

how it turned out the first time

and the second time

and what it looks like now, in need of dying again

General Discussion / Re: Mafia the game
Tue 12/06/2007 23:28:45
i played through Mafia just to complete it, i got hardly any enjoyment out of it at all.
it did have a few neat features though, such as being able to pay a fine to get the cops to stop chasing you, and the cars requiring petrol although i never actually managed to run out of it.
but the story and voice acting were pretty terrible and it just felt like the actors were reading their lines and not actually acting.
i also spotted a possibly copyright violation which i emailed the publishers about but never got a reply, there's a sound clip that's taken from the movie Leon used as an ambient sound in some areas of the game near buildings (it's the part of the movie where Matilda's dad is shouting at her about smoking and tells her to get inside and do her homework outside of their apartment), it's slightly muffled but highly recognisable.
the final mission was infuriatingly difficult too, that coupled with the really crap ending earned it a "bleh" on my rating scale, it would have got a "hmm" perhaps if all the playing areas had been one, but then there wasn't much to do in free roam anyway.

are you using Windows XP?
the webcam function in skype won't work with any other version of windows.
there is always MSN though which should allow webcam and audio conversations at the same time, or if not you can use MSN for webcam and skype for chat.

i'd really love to get an old Chevrolet Astro or any other old american van with nice leather seats and a sofabed in the back.

i've been hearing about this on the various Digitally Imported stations i listen to (mostly Classical Electronica), but they also have the occassional advert.
it would be a shame to lose Soma, as i hear a lot of good stuff i can't find anywhere else on Groove Salad and i already lost the starstream channel to live135 or whatever it went to when it stopped being shoutcast.
it's really just another example of the rich wanting to get richer.

does your XP disc automatically boot if the disc drive is in the boot devices?
i installed XP recently and it pretty much took care of everything itself and the only thing i really had to do was make it less annoying and get it running like win2k...

Linux is not the end-all be-all solution to computer trouble.
True. But it's becoming an excellent alternative to Windows, and it has a lot less errors, in my opinion.
Still, computers should be all about choice, so it's really up to you.

linux has a lot less errors because there's a lot less the typical user can run on it. i ran Ubuntu on my old pc for a month or two (Athlon 800) and all i did was look at the nice screensavers, play the mini golf game, try out a few ports of games i could already play perfectly fine through windows. the only difference i did notice was that movie playback through VLC (especially xvid) was a lot better than under windows 98.

I think there's more potential to help the 11 year old because his need is greater but I think it will be more stressful and maybe a bit of a lost cause.  The other seems fun and simple but perhaps a little unrequired.  What do people think?

i think that with an attitude like that this isn't really a decision you should be making, from that statement alone it seems like you want more to have fun and an easy time than to actually help the kid.

i had this problem when i seriously messed up my registry, the pc would get to the Windows loading screen and then just reset.
it could also just be overheating ofcourse.

General Discussion / Re: vista problems
Thu 17/05/2007 02:41:00
hasn't vista actually been released late? i seem to remember it was supposed to be released last year sometime.
or was it next year... something about them removing a load of planned security features to make the release date.

What that game needs is colour (although this may be the style of the game) but in all a nice game and a nice idea.

But first a few details:

1.  The game is designed in Commodore 64 style.

guess you didn't read the first post too well  ;)
i don't see how any extra colour would add anything to the game, if it was added now it would take away a lot of the game's charm, Progz has done such amazingly wonderful things with the limits he has set himself.

but... people ALREADY knew that, that's why it was so obvious what you had done.
this was just a pointless waste of a thread. save the 'jokes' for gengen where they belong with all the other rubbish.

it just looks like you've taken a photo and resized it to be smaller using pixel resizing and then made it bigger again using smart/bicubic sizing. anyone can do that.

General Discussion / Re: AGS is slow???
Fri 11/05/2007 17:13:32
if i remember rightly AGS does have an option to split the game up into smaller parts.
just sounds like people badmouthing AGS because they prefer another engine to me.

i think everyone has kinda misunderstood the theme for this contest.
it's when games INSPIRE real life, not games IN real life.
imagine your entry R4L but instead of pac-man being played in a real hedge maze instead there is a hedge maze made to look like pac-man's play area with like a graveyard where the ghosts would be and a cherry tree somewhere.
or Sinsin's entry, but instead of having a character from mario kart in it, have the speed bost pads or question mark boxes on the road.
