I'm not quite sure what Increator is writing in response to, but it seems good enough advice. I wish I knew that when I was without vehicular transport for a couple of months...no idea how I'd have jogged in a big overcoat, though :D.

But seriously, what is up with all this Icey hatred?
Honestly, I don't really know Icey, I haven't played any of his games, or any of the games inspired by his characters, and I neither love, nor hate, nor overly care for OSD, and my only knowledge of him seems to be from what he says in these forums.

Monkey, as you say, the thread started off with a reasonable enough purpose, but then why were you one of the first to jump on his back and start gnawing (no hatred to you, monkey, but I find it funny considering the quote in your signature :P)?
I mean, discounting Icey's somewhat quirky writing style (and honestly, in a forum with so many international members, I've seen worse. It may be "funny" that his is bad considering he's from an english speaking country, but... is that reason to badger him even more?).

His request wasn't SO far out. People here collaborate very often to play online games. We have civ games, minecraft, we played trackmania, etc. Yet in some bizarre subversion of the concept of "trolls", the first relevant or even related response to the original point of his topic was somewhere in the middle of the 2nd page.

I'm certainly not "passionate" about online gaming, and while I have P64 installed on my computer, I'm not overly fond of either Mariokart or Super Smash brothers, I PROBABLY wouldn't join in on playing those, but I'm sure others would have fun. I've had my fun playing other online games here with other AGSers.

Perhaps someone interested could set up a server so that some like-minded people could enjoy themselves.

I like the Trapezoid method (also, hello Trapezoid! :D). One of the things I love about adventure games is the exploration, and the LOOK interaction really helps with that. Instead of just describing the item to the player, you could perhaps use the player character's response to give an understanding of the character.

Since the conversation has moved on a bit from the original problem with "Look at", I'd like to mention that for me the idea that "Oh, this object only has 1 possible interaction that is relevant?" isn't necessarily followed by "then I should simplify my interface to only have 1 action!"

I don't quite see how that follows. It doesn't break immersion for me to have a choice between "Push Desk" and "Open Desk". It breaks immersion when I start thinking of the game mechanics with having only "Use" and wondering what will happen if I "Use Desk".

It's like those "interactiveness games" I played on the computer as a kid, where you could click random objects on the screen, and each different object would have a different result: a sound effect, an animation, some colourful graphics, etc. Half the fun was clicking on things to see what would happen (the other half was clicking repeatedly on one particular thing and laughing at the repeated sound or animation). Those were fun, but I didn't really consider them adventure games, and I'm not really sure people would want that to be the motivation in an adventure game.

It's like someone at some point looked at games with their plethora of stock responses and said "Why do we have 9 verbs here, when more than half of them half the time give a stock response and have no result?" and figured the answer was "Simplify and reduce the interface" rather than "Be creative and inventive, and think of situations where you'd need to both push the desk as well as open it".

Now sorry to digress even further, but recently for a game I was working on (which uses the 2 button look/walk & interact interface) I came across a situation where I'd want to be able to USE a character (or more specifically something on him) as well as talk to him. And I couldn't think of an all-inclusive, easy to use interface that would allow that! Verb-coins block the screen, require delay (of either extra clicks or waiting time) and thus really annoy me, having a verb-list for 3 verbs seemed a bit silly, and having to swap between different verbs constantly by right-clicking Sierra style also seemed distasteful to me. So then it came down to some technical method....

I was first thinking of utilising the middle-mouse button somehow, but those irritating laptoppers stopped me. Then I thought of combining it with the keyboard, but that seemed like it could be a bit unintuitive. Finally (with some agreeing voices), I decided on a double-click==talk, single-click==use thing.

So...if you figured you HAD to have at least 3 verbs (excluding inventory and walking, of course), how would you handle it?

No, you have to CHECK the recycling bin first! It'll have vital information!

Because m0ds wanted to plug Kinky Island, of course! :P

It's a post that your friend added you to, and through it you can be invited to Google+. It means exactly what it said, you should try clicking the link in your email later, and then perhaps you will be added to Google+.

In that case... Kingdom of Loathing.
And Fallen London.

I thought about that, but honestly, Plato's Lost Dialogue seemed kinda boring...just loads of text, and only a few interesting bits explaining random stuff about Atlantis.

I always wanted to WRITE something like the Grail Diary (I even bought myself a moleskin journal thing), but I wouldn't be able to think of anything interestingly exotic and mystical to fill it with, so now it just has odd quotes I found interesting, a semaphore cheatsheet and some origami designs, and funky symbols in a fake language I haven't properly defined yet. I just love pulling it out in the middle of a discussion and start taking fake notes :D.
#1248
I believe you should be able to get a Grail Diary on ebay or something. The Last Crusade (adventure game) used to ship with it.

I want a Grail Diary too, though!

You should combine the two games so that the Guitar-Hero screen would be a jet-fighter, where you'd have to "kill" enemies in the sequence they appear to make the music :P

You know, loads of the resources in this thread have disappeared off the face of the internet: some were hosted on 2dadventures before it was cleared in 2007, some were hosted on temporary file hosting services, some on geocities, and some on personal sites that are no longer there. I am wondering if these (and future) contributions can't be uploaded to some special ags upload thing? I notice that of the earlier contributions, many that were hosted on our americangirlscouts.org were all that were available. Maybe we can have some prominent "UPLOAD CONTRIBUTIONS" button or something, and a place for this stuff to be browsed. As it is, out of the previous 4 pages, this is all that remains (sorry for the large, and perhaps unnecessary post):

Strazer's Norbert Nicefellow font

Some fellow called Ecle Poss at 3dlinks (asked to be given a copy of the game if his stuff is used)

Eric's Walkcycle base

Stuff by J. M. Kunert between 2003 and 2004:

MIDI Music m0ds made that he is offering for free. Also: Ghostly Rag, Text Message, Memories of a Fountain, Bone Shuffle and Twinkle

Some cursors and items by Krysis

A little code snippet for an in-game Yes/No thing by Akumayo

Some music (1, 2 and 3) made by, and some sound effects collected by, and some images and objects ripped/extracted by Stephen Storc (theatrx)

Loads of (mostly scripting resources) at jasonjkay's site: AGSResources

3D Sprite models by RedBlob: Cassie/Cassandra (TGA and CHA) and Brett (TGA and CHA). Credit will also need to go to Make Human for parts of the meshes.

Pslim suggested http://www.3d.sk/

DutchMarco provided 3 unfinished beach and one graveyard BG as well as a seaweed sprite at his site: http://home.planet.nl/~ooije375/ags/ags.html

A couple of images and animations that WackyWildCard extracted from "The Complete Guide to Anime Techniques". Can be used for a base:

Some awesome borders (1, 2, 3, 4) and patterns (1, 2, 3) Abstauber got from Deluxe Paint 2e

A REALLY Empty Game Module that monkey_05_06 cleaned and and provided in case you want to test some stuff out (created in AGS 3.2b4)

A side walkcycle base as stills and an animation that Matti created out of Eric's base

It could very likely be a memory or CPU speed problem, I remember having a similar (I'm guessing) issue in Photoshop that wasn't the replicable anywhere else, and it especially happened with my tablet.

If I understand you right, when you click and drag the mouse to draw something, the line or dot doesn't exactly follow, it lags by a few seconds, and sometimes gets jumbled up?

open your task manager and have your "CPU usage" and "Page File" thing tab open, and use photoshop, and see if it jumps when you are doing what you are doing.

You could instead have the belt being part of your inventory from beforehand, or have it so that when you click yourself, you pull off your belt, and it gets placed in your inventory.

You probably know of this already, but this link might be of some use to you:

HOW TO MAKE NICE AGI-ROOMS FROM PHOTOS
It also has some great links at the end of the article you can check out.

One solution is to use custom properties. You can create bool properties for all hotspots, characters, objects, etc., such as "Walk" "Use" "Look" "Talk" (you could probably condense it all into 1 int property with some clever scripting IF you wanted), and then accordingly, in your repeatedly_execute (or wherever you are handling your cursor highlighting), depending on which mode you are in, you can have it highlighted or not.

This WOULD require you to go through each and every hotspot and character and object, etc. and set it's various properties, but I'm assuming it'd be less work than having to code it all manually.

If you have other people who share/used your computer (family or friends or whatever, for example your father), then that isn't all that surprising. Probably something to do with cookies and stuff.

General Discussion / The old song-game!
Wed 08/06/2011 19:08:40
I remember seeing this game ages ago on AGS (back when my bandwidth didn't really allow me to participate :D), and I was feeling nostalgic today, and someone linked www.vocaroo.com which lets you record tiny thingoes.

So yeah, basically, I sing something, and then set what the next thing to sing is.

My horrible rendition of Aerosmith's Pink, certainly not helped even by the fact that I was listening to the song while recording

Next up, Queen's "I Want to Break Free"

just use that vocaroo thing and record it yourself, then post it here, along with the next song to sing :D.

No, I meant the recieving of emails like:

"I just collected $363 in just about a day online. scored it easily at - http://...... - you will love life so much more!"

From people you know (or from you to people you know).

It's not got anything to do with viruses (I don't think). What you mention happens often enough to me from people who use hotmail (:P). It's simply a matter of their password being compromised (they chose a very simply password easy to guess, or they entered their password somewhere stupidly and gave it away, or...something.

Simplest thing is just to change your password.
