Site & Forum Reports / Re: AGS IRC Down?

Still no  :cry:

A video I watched made me realise this information is available, and apparently, AGS is among the top 15 game engines used for games on steam, and the most popular adventure game focused one
https://steamdb.info/tech/

(but it only counts a game as an AGS one if it includes either the AGSteam.dll or acsetup.cfg, neither of which are really needed to run a game)

Site & Forum Reports / AGS IRC Down?

Someone mentioned this in general, but I thought maybe post here as well for greater visibility (it is the same domain, after all), but the AGS IRC Server has been down the last couple days.

Just noticed it in the last 2 days, thought it was me and my horrible holiday internet

I don't think seeking places/services to specifically target parents is useful, rather you should market your games as being for kids, and then naturally when parents search for them, they will find your games.

The 3D or the style of attempted humour or something reminded me of this from an ancient AGSer :D

I think at this point you have an acceptable base, but the BG seems a bit empty. If it's not going to be shown for very long, I guess that doesn't matter, but otherwise, I'd say some stuff to fill it in would be useful: a couple of cars, posters/notices on the walls, manholes, maybe some silhouette in the foreground, etc.

Sound in general is always a plus for me. If I'm playing an adventure game, I'm hoping to be focused on it specifically, and I'm not going to be distracting myself by listening to podcasts in the backgrounds. If I CAN mindlessly play an adventure game like that, I'd suspect it probably isn't a very good one.

Voices depend very heavily on the quality of the voice acting, though.

The very heavy detailing on the trees on the left is a bit distracting, especially since they're so far back, and even stuff much closer to our view is less detailed. I'd recommend having them at the same level as the trees on the right.

Seeing as the post was made over 6 months ago, I somehow get the feeling they're not looking for someone to do their chemistry puzzle anymore

Obviously, most devs would not care to share such information, but due to an exposure of steam's achievement API back in 2018, there was some data uncovered. So if the game you are looking for came out before mid-2018, there is some info on it. Games like the ones you mentioned were redeemed by a couple thousand players over the course of several years (the majority obviously being around release). This of course is not counting games that were in popular bundles, or games that were given for free, or games from famous publishers like Wadjet Eye.

As for your second question, certainly, when you have something ready to show and a concrete release date, you should start sharing. How much you should share before that, having never published a game on steam or gog, I cannot say.

Ooohh...yikes. I thought this was done in collaboration with Nr. 2698. If not, that's a bit...not nice. I mean, the art (that I can see from the screenshots) is basically his, except palette-swapped. Am I misunderstanding something?

Thank you for this awesome resource!

Could you share the tutorial you made relating to FoY as well? I remember it being very useful, and it would be a shame to have it lost!

Happy Birthday CJ! Thanks for the gift  :=

The problem here is that you have this function in repeatedly_execute(), which runs every gameloop, which is by default 40 times a second. So 40 times a second you are resetting the character's idle view with a different idle delay.

One possible solution (I can't verify it as I don't have AGS available just now) is that instead of setting the idleview every game loop, you can couch it inside a check inside the repeatedly_execute, e.g.

Code: ags

if (cEgo.View==4)
{
  cEgo.SetIdleView(4, Random(10)+1);
}

This way the delay will reset only after the player has already blinked.

Critics' Lounge / Re: Horror gives you wings

Are you seeking feedback, or just wanting to share something?

    I wasn't sure, since it doesn't seem like you were looking for critique, but since you posted here:
    • The angles are messed up: The wings are being seen straight on, but the person's body is looking to our left (and in fact, at that size, I initially thought his back was to us, and he had wings being sprouted out of his chest)
    • The wings seem a bit stiff (I'm assuming because the animation is simply the wings rotating, rather than actually folding)
    • I'm not getting particularly horrory vibes from it, in fact, it feels like an unexpected climatic situation as he swoops out from behind the hill to save the day

    I get the feeling you're going to tell me "Oh, it isn't complete yet". I look forward to seeing a completed piece for critique from you in the Critics Lounge one day :=.

Why is the short form of Early Access Version "EVA"?

I don't think either method would be a good way to raise funds. Demos are expected to be free, and an Early Access version of an adventure game will not be fun for anyone to play. If your specific goal is to raise funds to support continued creation of adventure games, you might go with an episodic style of games that reuse locations and characters

The bright natural features contrast too strongly with the dimmer models you made.

I may not have interacted with m0ds as much as some here, but whatever beliefs he may have, I always found him to be incredibly helpful and professional. He "published" my free game "Alien Time Zone" (in the sense that he uploaded it to the DB  :=, hosted it for a while, and even had it on his site), and the game is inarguably better for his music.

I can understand wishing to avoid him due to his beliefs, but I don't think that affects much in terms of publishing through Screen 7.

EDIT: Other publisher options would be Wadjet Eye Games (already mentioned) and the company that Ali used for his Nelly Cootalot game.
Or you could just self-publish.
