I think your absolutely right. Don't use voice acting unless it adds to the game experience. Problems such as bad voice acting and such would not be present if there is no voice anyway. I used to like the voice acting in the old games I played because it was such a novelty. Now it is not. Voice acting is just as likely to cheapen the game as it is to make it better. Of course, if there is a reason to have voice acting, and it is good quality, that would be great. Stuff like the voice acting in Space Quest 4. The narrator was very funny and the voice added to that. Of course, if the voice acting is just for the sake of it is no good. I played Monkey Island 3 recently, and hearing Guybrush say "umm..nah" 50 times was really annoying

there is no point arguing whether what we sense and observe is fact or belief. It could be taken either way as there is no proof of either. For the sake of sanity and balanced living, it is easier to believe that it is fact. Therefore the actual answer is inconsequential.
Belief in God could also be argued either way. There is no proof either way. Only BELIEF. One of the greatest stupidities of humanity is that it thinks it knows everything. Who is to say there is not a popsicle floating about somewhere in space? Or that there is or is no God? Or that what we observe and sense is fact or illusion?

A wall. Just barely. It is really dark. And a mosque dome peaking over the wall.

General Discussion / Re: Beard and long hair!
Tue 29/06/2004 08:06:11
I used to have long hair but I it never grew long enough so I had duck tails (when your hair curls at the end so as to stick out from the side of your neck). I got so annoyed with that, so I shaved my head. My face was so boring that I then started attempted growing a beard. Now my hair is coming back and I just discovered that Male pattern baldness is getting to me (my "forehead" takes up almost half my face), and at the age of 18 that is just scary.

About Pakistan:
Sadly there are a lot of problems here. Women are REALLY badly treated. If a guy goes to shop the salesman will say hello and shake your hands, maybe hug you and such, and try to sell you stuff. If it is a girl, unless the salesman knows the person he might just stare at the women if she is not wearing a hijab, and no hello, no touching AT ALL, and will barely sell anything only if the woman finds what she needs herself and pay for it. And that is in the city. Sure, this is not the usuall thing but it happens. I believe this behaviour was caused by some ultra-religious president guy (who's name I cannot now remember). In the villages it is was always like that.
We are really poor due to a whole line of corrupt prime ministers, who just recently ended. Then we spend so much on defense causing even more losses.
Even with all its problems, I still love it. I am proud of the values and beliefs that stands for (even though they are rarely followed).Ã,  It is so beautiful. There is stuff from deserts to plains to forests to mountains. I love the clothing. I may be evil, but I love the piracy. You can get CDs for Rs 45 (I believe that is around 75 cents) and DVDs for around Rs 100 (around $1.50). I think that the whole country uses one copy of Windows. Still, it is crazy to try getting a CD for even $20. That is just impossible for the average person here.

Myths:
It is not really dangerous. Unless you are out alone at 2 am in slutty type clothes you are usually ok. You will not usually see soldiers with guns or terroristy people. That is mostly at the borders and at the important embassies.

One thing I dont get about America is how wasteful it is. Stuff is thrown away just cause one tiny easily fixed part is broken. Family is moving so half the furniture is thrown away. New kinds of the same stuff is bought even though it barely does anything new, and nothing is wrong with the old stuff.

bwahahahahahah! Trust me to use the cheapo method of escape.
Use the knife on the basin of piranhas, and get your hand bitten of.
Reload.
Pick up the bow.
Use the bow to get strong twine.
Pick up bone (from skeleton)
Use knife with bone and twine or bow and twine (either will do).
use improvised spear with basin (after a short stabbing frenzy, all the piranhas are dead
wait for the water to fill up the room
Swim up  to through skylight (the hole is too small)
Use shovel on hole to break it up and widen it
Escape
Use improvised spear on Redwall

Necro!
You probably don't remember me, but you used to give me huge amounts of in the Beginner forums. I always appreciated that, and wondered where you had gone, even though I never completed that game. Welcome back!

Baah! I hate myself for not putting in more effort. And for not actually having muscles as big as that.

Adventure Related Talk & Chat / Game Design
Thu 13/05/2004 10:56:30
My previous game attempts suffered because I just thought of a basic plot, drew a BG, scripted it into AGS, and while doing this thought of other rooms and elements to add, drew them, scripted them into AGS..., and so on.
So how exactly should a game be designed for maximum perserverance to completion, quality and structure? Should I do scripting and then add the BGs, should I should I do the sprites along with the BGs or after, when should I start worrying about all the Global variables etc?
Is there some tutorial for game design, or is there some kind soul out there who can help me?

That tree reminds me of the Weeping Willow in King's Quest 5.
But the weeping willow was sooo saaad.... :'(

DC, maybe it would look better to have the face more incorporated with the bark of the tree. Just my idea though, it looks great as it is. I would love to see the "pixelified" version of this

oh yeah, I almost forgot, another good book I read recently was "Life of Pi" by Yan Martel. Also another good book I recently read, not so much for entertainment as for curiosity, was "A History of God" by Karen Armstrong. I borrowed a book about Salladin by Tariq Ali, and although I can't remember its name, it was a very enjoyable book. I enjoyed Roald Dahl's books alot when I was younger (and still do), so I read some of his "Adult" books, and though they were enjoyable to read, they seemed too disturbing. I was also recently reading one of Paul Theoraux's (correct spelling?) books "Ride on the Iron Rooster", and though it is slightly old, I still found it great.
*EDIT*
Remixor, I read one of those graphic novels, and I have a strong feeling it is by one of the authors you mentioned. It was called something like "The greatest kid in the universe" and the story kept switching back and forth between 2 people 2 generations apart (grandfather and grandson I think). It was really warped, and in some places even depressing, but it was a great read.

I can't change any of my profile settings. When I click the profile button my profile comes up. Then when I click any of the modify buttons on the left, I am told that "The user does not exist". Even when I try just looking at the profile of others, I get the message that the user does not exist

General Discussion / Re: what... mad
Wed 05/05/2004 13:59:28
sadly, alot of things are getting me mad at the moment. I am mad at my telephone line, that barely gets me 19kbs right now, and disconnects every 2 minutes...woop..there it goes again. I am mad at sleazy telephone repairmen who swear they will do whatever they can to fix my line, then go and share it with some other customer. I am mad at my college which is delaying my studies as the teachers never come. I am mad at people who try attacking the wrong by advocating with other wrong. I am mad at voilence and oppression in ANY form

I just finished "The DaVinci Code" and your absolutely right. I started reading it, and then I just could not stop. I read right through the night and finished sometime in the morning. I guess I need to learn self controlÃ,  ;D. I have read 3 or 4 of the Xanth books, and wish to get some more. I LOVE the hitchhiker books, and read them all 5 or 6 times. Of course, I cannot compete with my peers here, as I just got them about 2 years ago. Another book I read from Douglas Adam was Long Dark Teatime of the soul. Although it was slightly confusing, I still found it a great read and really funny. I also read a few books by Dave Barry, which I also found really funny.
I had started the LOTR series when I was 12 (courtesy of my father, who read it about the same age, and read it 12 times since(really)), but HAD to stop in the 2nd book. I hate stopping reading books that I have started, so I started again two or three years ago, and enjoyed it much more. I was wanting to read the "Wheel of time" books, but I saw one of the books from later in the series at an old bookshop, and could not resist the price so I got it. A big mistake, that. I read the Harry Potter books too, and I liked them too. Three others that might be considered "kiddish" but I still enjoyed are "Chronicles of Chrestomanci", "Redwall" and "Morrigan"
I am now reading into war stories (also courtesy of my father). I read "Goodbye to all that" by Robert Graves, and now am reading "Emden" about the ship. I even read a lot of "Flashman" booksÃ,  :P, which give a hugely distorted, but amusing version of many historical events.
Of course, my most read book, and still one of my favourites is....."Dotty Dolphin". I mean who can resist the incredible allure of the book, the fat, plastic coated, drool proof, flexible, illustrated pages, and the short, though incredibely deep text:
....................
Dotty Dolphin likes to be
besides the ships upon the sea
The sailors all look out and hope
to see her in their telescope...
For if a ship should go astray
Dotty helps them find the way.
Dotty dolphin loves to care
for ships and sailors everywhere
.....................
Just wow ;D
