Ooh! I just saw this post for the first time! I have a collection... but as a typical American...it's purely an American collection. Would anyone like to see it regardless?
Pffft....American coins...what rubbish!

Of course I want to see it!
My American collection is quite limited. No coins that aren't still currently in circulation (unless you count dollar and half-dollars :D), and the oldest is a 1945 wheatie.

Check out what I got in a letter today!

You can be expecting a thank you note in the mail, Mati, but thank you here as well!

I hate to sound like a grumpy downer, but does it really serve any purpose? I mean, it is just the novelty of a "mouth/wind control" attached to a synthesiser, right? And surely there are more finely tuned methods of control than blowing?
I mean, technically, there are an infinite number of methods of control you could put in front of the synthesiser- music generated by eyeball-tracking, music generated by strategically punching, music generated by spitting in specific jars, etc. In the end, what you want to look for is the most fine-tuned method of control, which in real time would probably be something like a synthesiser keyboard, and otherwise it'd be modifying the music manually on a computer or something.

General Discussion / Re: Character Portraits
Thu 02/10/2014 10:03:05
I like to think of character portraits as a zoom-in of the person, which is why I don't personally like character portraits in a radically different style from the rest of the game (for example, pixelly lo-res "semi-realistic" or specifically styled non-cartoony backgrounds and sprites, and then a manga style portrait, or "painted" portrait is common in many games, which bothers me). Also a lot of games have the portrait in a "portrait" style (i.e. the character is posing in a specific way), which most of the time doesn't match at all what the character is doing at the time. Even portraits facing the other way from how they're shown on screen is distracting to me (unless the portrait is always a perpendicular-to-face view).

Other than that, I quite like them...barring any other considerations, a nicely done portrait for speech is a plus to me.

I had a computer in my home from before I can remember. Initially I used to sit behind my father and watch as he played adventure games, offering the occasional bit of bad advice. I used to muck about with edutainment titles (Playroom, some Mickey Mouse game, etc.), but I think Prince of Persia was one of the first REAL games I played on my own (well, I also played it with my friend, alternating between one controlling jump and one controlling movement), and that was around 4. It took me a while to complete the first level, and that game was utterly terrifying. After a bit I migrated to playing adventure games mostly on my own.

PS: Which Dangerous Dave, Adeel? The original diamond collecting looks-like-it-was-based-in-a-dungeon black background platformer, or the creepy one with the dude and his shotgun?

I was more a Math Rescue kid :D. Helped me recognise the shot enough to figure it was probably by the same company.

I think you've got more sprites than slots for them now, but here (from the insta-game pack not by me, but I'm pretty sure it is okay for you to use since you're not selling an AGS Mix CD) is the protagonist of Alien Time Zone
and some other games you have not heard of:

I'm struggling to understand why people would even care about somebody on the internet being wrong. As long as you personally speak and write English correctly, what's the big deal?
Because language is not a solo activity. It is a form of communication. And if your communication is broken, it should be fixed.

EDIT:
I have been informed that my phrasing could be interpreted as being a bit harsh. Let me assure everyone that my statement was not directed at any one person, and I meant no offense. Perhaps a less acerbic way of putting it would be:
The main (possibly only?) function of language is to transfer an idea from the head of one person to the head of another person while changing as little as possible. If the usage fails at this, then it is fundamentally useless and broken, and should be fixed.

Is it ironic that my statement of the necessity of standards in language and communication to avoid misunderstandings was misinterpreted?

With 5 contenders, the entries are now closed, and it is time to vote! Voting will go on till the 22nd, hopefully enough time. Please cast your votes to fit these categories:

Concept: The coolest, most creative idea; the one that offers the best response to the rules and spirit of the Blitz topic.
Artistic Execution: The most technically and artistically accomplished image; the most successful expression of a personal artistic style.
Playability: The screen that would work best as an adventure game background (with possible interactions, walkable areas, exits, etc); a screen that would be fun to play.

Sure!
How does up till and including Sunday (thus giving all us anti-social non-partyers time to work on it) sound?
Chance for more people, then!

Green-leather (or whatever that material is) top for the desk! And if you're asking for details to add, one of those dual pen-holders with the extra long pens.

Not sure how presidential yellow stripes are (I guess you went with the oval office flavour? :D), but I can't think of a good replacement (wood? plain white with designs engraved in the corners? gold?). Either way, richer, darker wood and more complicated textures for the furniture coverings and carpet.
