General Discussion / Re: what... mad
Wed 05/05/2004 18:44:32
It makes me mad when people put morals and ethics before common sense.

All the other things which angry me pretty much fit this statement, but I'll still note some.

It makes me mad when the public opinion about economy consists of the 'Robin Hood myth' (all rich people are evil, all poor people are victims).
It makes me mad when people look at a rare phenomenon instead of a common practice.
It makes me mad when people think with their hearts instead of their mind (a sin I have commited oh so too often).
It makes me mad when people in positions of power who were chosen in a democratic manner are handicapped by ones who weren't.
It makes me mad when human-rights activists stick their noses to where they don't belong.
It makes me mad when the whole press is biased one-way.

And some lighter ones:
It makes me mad when people regard football as a 'silly' sport.
It makes me mad when people who are in my car tell me what music to turn on. Bring CD-Players, I ain't putting that shit on!
It makes me mad when people I hardly know ask for incosiderate favours (such as, "Drive me here and there, would you?" Fuck off!)

I am not a fan of anime as well. In fact, the only part of Kill Bill I disliked (both volumes) is the anime segment. I mean, how much of the same can you show? I've heard people say that QT's dialog drags, but this 'action' scene drags much more.

LotR?

Was that the movie that was one huge amazing CG battle after the other?!

I totally walked out of that movie! And part II and III!

My Sarcasm Detector 9000 detects... sarcasm!

I hate it when my friends drag me to stupid comedies. The bottom two are Mr. Deeds (my only 1 vote on IMDB) and Johny English, on which I won't waste any more text. The 3rd spot was grabbed by the totally horrible Queen of the Damned. Why, why, why do that to a great prequel?
In the movies I-unlike-most-people-didn't-like category there is Twelve Monkeys (didn't get it), The Terminator (horribly dated), A Beautiful Mind (too silly to be touching) and Fight Club (can't forgive nonsense beginning).

Since it isn't really much of change, it's all well. It'll probably take a while to get used to completely, but again, as the changes are minimal it won't take a long time. However, I do agree that you must remove the post count ASAP, before we get some serious flooding.

Apparently, none of them care either.

I have the impression you misunderstood my motives. I don't care about it the who-did-Beckham-sleep-with way. I just think it is interesting to think what sort of movie can fit them both. Thus, it is much more about "silly-movie-trivia-fun" than gossip.

Yai, I found a reason to have some silly-movie-trivia-fun.

From IMDB:
QuoteCelebrated directors Sofia Coppola and Quentin Tarantino have sparked reports they're dating, following a series of intimate meetings in New York. The maverick movie-makers stunned diners at Manhattan's plush Downtown Cipriani restaurant on Friday, when the unlikely pair sat down together for a romantic meal. Coppola and Tarantino fueled speculation they were an item on Sunday when they were spotted strolling the streets of New York with their arms wrapped around each other, according to the Pagesix website. Lost In Translation director Coppola - who has been single since her split with husband Spike Jonze last year - later visited a video shop with Tarantino, they rented some movies and left looking "very cozy". However, a representative for the directors has downplayed reports of a romance, insisting the pair are just "good friends".

What movies do you think they rented?  :)

Am I the only one that's known about this for 2 years?

I can't wait!

I've been following it for a while as well. Seems like they can pull it off, but I guess we shall never know until it is finally released.

Raggit - all movies are saved on your hard-disk as MPEG files. Later, you can add voice to your movies, and the developers are even promising lip-sync for the dubbing. According to what they say, you can create your own story.

I am afraid it will be very limited in terms of moviemaking. But if it's not, well then I'll create "Lord of the Rings vs. X-Men", the latest, biggest and best epic production!

Barcik, although I haven't seen it yet, I think yes, it would be as cool (if not greater) if it were a whole instead of two parts. As Roger Ebert said in his review: "Put the two parts together, and Tarantino has made a masterful saga that celebrates the martial arts genre while kidding it, loving it, and transcending it. I confess I feared that "Vol. 2" would be like those sequels that lack the intensity of the original. But this is all one film, and now that we see it whole, it's greater than its two parts."

If you put the current, two movies together, then indeed the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. But, I believe it is mainly so because of the way they add-up different aspects of the story to create a complete piece of moviemaking. Was it made as one movie, I doubt there would have been such a clear difference between the two parts, if at all. It would just be one lean motion picture, consisting of plot, action, chit-chat, blood, style and character development. Personally, I prefer the current format where all these things are divided between the two volumes. It adds up to the movie's charm.

Two more comments that sprang into my mind while looking back at both films.
1) Vol. 1 has more scenes which feel stretched then Vol. 2. The Hatori Hanzo segment, for example, dragged on quite a bit. And, as a person who rather dislikes anime, that animated sequence was really too long. The only place in Vol. 2 where I think QT could have used tighter editing is the last chapter.
2) It's a good thing the film was divided in two. One of the best things about Kill Bill is how different both volumes are, and yet how perfectly they fit together and complete each other. As Grundislav said, both volumes are the Yin and Yang of Kill Bill. And could the good old Yin-Yang be nearly as cool if it consisted of one whole piece instead of two halves?  :P

Why isn't it obvious. Cancelling the funding of a big project caused such economical problems that forced Lucasarts to sack 29 workers!

I have a feeling there's a whole shitload of Star Wars games coming up.

Oh, what a great movie that was. Right now, I have a feeling that Tarantino can do no wrong. There is so much style, essence and heart in Volume 2. By making Vol. 2 the opposite of Vol. 1 in many ways, Tarantino in fact adds new dimensions to both films which can't be seen there on their own - Volume 1 receives more depth, Volume 2 receives more vividness. Together, this is a full and complete saga.
First, what a visual feast that is. Darkness, Light, Color, black and white, ratio changes, QT throws in all of his arsenal. But, unlike other film makers with no sense of style, he knows what to do and when to do it. The grave scene is one of the most thrilling and intense scenes I have ever seen. The audience could just feel the terror.
The action scenes, despite there being considerably less of them, are fantastic. The choreography in the Elle vs. Beatrix fight was inch-perfect. The short fight on the chairs was a great piece of imagination and execution as well.
The character development is surprisingly astonishing. These little QTish dialogs show us that these are more then stereotypes, but true people, who love, hate and regret. The wonderful performances by Thurman and Carradine produce two unique captivating characters.
My only two complaints are that the editing in the last chapter could be tighter, and that the soundtrack is considerably worse than in Volume 1. Besides this two point, this is a masterpiece, near perfect movie. Which one did I like better? I jus't can't tell.
I can't wait to see Tarantino's attempt at WWII. Sometime next year...

I always found it funny that Miramax, a company that has ruined most of the kung-fu films it has released on DVD and effectively prevented other companies from releasing decent versions or even selling imported versions of those movies and the other movies Miramax owns the US publishing rights to but haven't even released yet, published Kill Bill which is basically a homeage to just those movies.

And somewhat related to it - Quentin Tarantino convinced Miramax to release the uncut version of Hero.

I think there is little discussion here. "BAD" drugs, as you called them, are bad. There can be no approving of them.

Me, my poision is booze. Not to say that I am an alcoholic, or drink casually, but I do find the lure of the light-headed feeling alcohol causes to be find to resist. However, ever since I had begun driving I had only few chances to drink properly.
Anything else, I don't touch. Surrounded by people (in schoo) of whom about 95% tried to smoke and 70% still do, I am very proud of the fact that I have never even tried a cigarette. At the moment, I have no intention of doing so, but I must admit that I am very curious. So, naturally I didn't try anything further down the line either.
Pot? I am not really against it, but against the daily usage of it. I have several good friends, who have in the last years become addicted to marijuana. I know all the arguments that pot causes no physical dependance, etc. etc., but for fuck's sake, I know what I see. They cannot through a couple of days without smoking some. At first, I had no problem of this. Hell, I even came sometimes, sober, to laugh my ass off from their jokes. But as time flew by, I felt worse about it. There is not a gap between this group of pot users and the rest of our company which will not easily disappear, if at all. They haven't really changed (they are still fun to be with). But it still feels that way. Drugs caused several of our friends to become somewhat alienated from me and the rest of my friends who do not smoke pot (regulary). I just hope that they will not fall to some heavier drug.

QT did say in several interviews that he would like to create Volume 3 in something like 15 years, where the daughter Vernita Green is the main character.
