Arnie is not a real politician, after suffering from an egg thrown at him.

Edit: Argh! I meant 'Arnie is now a real politician...'.

Hola Lorena!

Andail, you said you have two stories. Care posting them?

I have been entertaining thoughts of doing a competition, but in a slightly different manner. As it seems I have failed in creating proper rules, I'm all for this one.

From Butcher's ("COME BACK!") Inferno. "Inferno, son of a bitch." You have to see it to appreciate it.

Also, I liked "Getting ahead in navigation" from MI a lot.

Welcome back Andail.

I have suffered a slight depression during the summer holiday for a different reason. I did very little productive. A lot of my time was wasted on just computer, television or just lying around. Now don't get me wrong - I did go out fairly a lot. I met my friends and we hanged out. And yet, I still wasn't really happy.
I found out that when I do something productive, in my eyes, such as studying, working on a game or just spending good time with my friends for maby hours, I may be tired but I am happy I spent the day well.
But when I look back at a day and see that I finish it where I started it I get depressed.
What, of course, brings me back to Helm's post about happiness in creation. And after I do my SAT, I am going to do just that.

Another thing to avoid with creating a minority character is to put him in just to show how unique your game is. "Look, I have a gay protagonist, my game is unique and original!". A character must be gay because it's a part of its personality, of what defines it as a character, as GarageGothic said, not just to be there.

I found the example you have given (the first) very interesting. I, as a typical white hetro-sexual male consumer will be suprised, to say the least. I am not homophobic at all, but such a thing is so outside the norm that it I would not be ready and accepting regardless of the homosexuality.

However, I do disagree, at least to a certain extent about the use of black characters. Mainstream viewers, gamers, readers etc. are by now well accustomed to black characteres as pretty much anything. This was a long process, which took years, but it changed the views of society enough to put blacks as normal people, instead of stereo-types. Of course this is still done, but mostly in cheesy movies.

Same goes with other minorities. Now, home-sexuals are used mainly as sterotypes. But it too is a long way from the total homophobia of several decades ago. There is a constant shift in the views of society, and with each such a game, movie or book the use of such a character becomes more and more accepted by the general public.

A good idea, but for it to be successful there is a need some serious help of the pros.

I thought about it and I agree with Trapezoid. All fantasy seems cliche to us, because all that we regard as fantasy is elves & orcs & magic & good & evil etc.

However, works such Bulgakov's "The Master and Margarita", Carrol's "Alice in Wonderland" and Herbert's "Dune". All these works can be classified as fantasy, according to its definition, but it's hard to do so because it is not the 'fantasy' we know.

Another influential book would be Darwin's, whose name I cannot seem to think of at the moment.

Gonzo, book 3 you can skip. The first 2 are fun, but in the 3rd the whole development stops, much like with other fantasy franchizes. There is pretty much no progress of the plot at all, except making it a bit more 'complex' until book 9.

I am with Darth here. Yes, it's totally cliche. Yet if it's done well, I like it.

Err... I really don't understand what is happening. Anti-semitism? Where?

Good vs. Evil! Evil threatening to ruin the world!

However, a cliched setting is not all bad.

One week ago I finished reading Orson Scott Card's "Ender's Game". The setting: There is a war between the human beings and the alien 'buggers', all threatening to destroy each other. Anything original there? Not really. And with all that the author develops a very wise and interesting novel, putting the war to the side of the amazing character development.
