Jun-30        2100   Germany 2 vs 1 Algeria ****WILDCARD*****

Well, that was a waste of a good wild card.... (roll)  To be fair, I got the score correct, only 30 minutes too late.

So far only teams that topped their groups have gone on to win this round of matches. Can Switzerland or USA change that?

Ixnay on the roupgay opperstay strategy!  You're going to give away all my points.... :P ;)  There weren't really a lot of close groups, though. Except in Group A (Mexico, Brazil), all the groups had a clear winner (even when points were close, the group winner had clearly beaten the runner up).  The next round is going to be much more of a toss-up, which is why I burned my wild-card on the "sure thing" of Germany-Algeria.  (roll)

Good luck to everyone on tomorrow's matches (especially if you bet along the same lines as me! ;) )

I have to apologise to you Selly, too

Wasn't "Selly" the cancer awareness blob from the 1980s?

What are the rules about having a nickname nickname? ;)

I picture this being carried by a James Bondesque type in a suit, going into an enemy office to wage a bit of "dirty" war. (laugh)

Fortnightly what?  Are we still doing these things? ;)

Great topic.  I look forward to contributing. :)

Ah, now it's interesting!  No doubt we'll start swapping leaders regularly, though, now that there are a lot more points on the table for each game.

But.... can anyone explain me the deductions?  Is that some sort of beauty tax on Khris, Selmiak, monkey and me?  :-*

@Baron. Did you ever decide what you wanna do about that Switzerland France game? Is - - - your official answer or shall I call it nil-nil?

 I still can't believe that my crystal ball was wrong! I want to revise my June 25 Ecuador France prediction to Ecuador 1 - 12 France. (nod)

What kind of maniacal villain would leave a loaded guillotine just lying around?  Something like that is just screaming to be used as an instrument of his comeuppance!  :=

Sometimes, if its a bad one, I'll even flog and whip first and then sit back down. (laugh)

Why not just sit it on the naughty step?  (roll)

Well, I guess that's that: it's results time!
As I see it, the votes are as follows:

Ghost      8 points
Stupot+    8 points
Eric       6 points
Sinitrena  6 points
WHAM       6 points
kconan     5 points
CaptainD   5 points
Griffadon  2 points
LostTrainDude

A pretty close run contest, with a lot of hard decisions to be made (especially by me, the self-proclaimed Vice-President of Awesome and official tie breaker ;-D).  I really liked Stupot+ and Ghost's reviews for different reasons, but probably my votes (were I allowed to cast them freely) would have gone to Griffadon for a hilarious concept, kconan for a his well thought-out delivery (especially the jokes), WHAM for his writing style and CaptainD for incisiveness.

So, now the choosings.  It did not escape my attention that all but one of the voters cast a vote for Ghost (the exception being the very classy Ghost himself), while Stupot+'s votes were more clustered among a dedicated hard-core fan base.  So I hereby declare Ghost the winner of this competition, and assign unto him the Golden Statler & Waldorf Betentacled Trophy of Critical Game Review Excellence!

Thus, barely relegated to second place is Stupot+, who therefore gets to take home the Silver Statler & Waldorf Betentacled Trophy of Critical Game Review Exceptionalness!

And finally, since I hate playing favourites and everyone did such a fine job, we have a three-way tie for third place with Eric, WHAM, and Sinitrena receiving the Bronze Statler & Waldorf Betantacled Trophy of Critical Game Review Intriguement!

Congratulations to all the winners!  And now it falls to Ghost's worthy shoulders to give us our next topic in the next exciting instalment of....

..THE FORTNIGHTLY WRITING COMPETITION!!!!

It's a good place to think things over.

It's true: I often get some of my best game puzzle ideas while sitting on the toilet.  Like the inaugural puzzle in Charlie Foxtrot, where you have to escape the floating death droid by flushing yourself down the alien toilet, or the prank-flushed Archaeology Cowboy VHS puzzle in Blue Lobe Inc., or the whole Besieged game about a medieval dung-shoveller.  Wait.....am I a one-trick pony?  8-0

It's German humour, so it's not required to be funny.

Silly Germans.... :P ;)    I hear you folks are into efficiency over there: this should help! :=

Oooooo, shiny!  Whatcha sellin', P?  Ah, who cares: take my money, just take it! :=

Well, that's all the time we've got folks: it's voting time.  Your impressively numerous 9 contestants in alphabetical order are:

CaptainD House Hunter Extreme!
Eric: Bejeweled: Apocalypse
Ghost: I Swear Once You Blink, It's Different
Giraffadon: Small Talk & Awkward Situation Simulator '98
kconan: SimCop
LostTrainDude Do NOT Fall From the Stage
Sinitrena: Into the Machine
Stupot+: No One Can Stop the Beast Fiesta
WHAM: Data Entry Simulator 2024

Voting will be by category because that's the way we've rolled around here for the past 18 months, because I like that it gives authors more feedback, and mostly because it antagonizes Ponch to no end. ;-D  You can vote up to three deserving authors per category: each vote is a point, and the most points at the end of voting will win, with ties being decided by the Vice-President of Awesome (a.k.a. your contest administrator, me :-* ).

The categories (a little different, since we're not necessarily dealing with stories as such):

Best Fictional Game: The Review aside, who came up with the most creative/exciting/heinously awful game idea?
Best Organized Review: Your attention was grabbed, the right details came at the right time, it felt complete
Best Word Choice/Style: The technical art of combining words in clever or gripping ways.
Most Incisive Review: Which reviewer would you trust to direct your gaming expenditures, based on their perceived thoroughness/truthfulness/salesmanship?

Voting will be open until midnight June 18, with votes to be tabulated whenever I deem fit on the 19th.  Good luck to all contestants!  Stand by for trophies....

VOTE!
