Buh-ump!

Well we've got just over ten days left, and I reckon my team is getting close to about half-done our entry.  Has anyone else taken the plunge here?

I now require a beta tester or two to test this game.  It is a MAGS entry, so timelines are tight.  We will have a testable version available by Thursday April 26, but will need it entirely tested within about 48 hours.  The good news?  It's a pretty short game with no onerous walking.  I would say you could easily test and read everything twice in an hour, but we do need the extra eyes.  Any takers?

I feel bad that this topic has been neglected, especially since a good number of otherwise decent adventure games would benefit from at least a passing familiarity with advanced English grammar.  Also, I'd be interested in resources as well.  The only thing I can think of is Language Power published by Gage.  I used to use the earlier books quite a bit when I was a full time tutor (Language Power A, Language Power B), but it seems to me the series ran to D or E, and even C was challenging for my intermediates (mind you, they were the type of students who needed remedial tutoring....).  There were definitely lots of exercises though, which you could always stretch out (er... consolidate) with a writing exercise, etc.

Recruitment / [RECRUITED] Wages of Darkness
Fri 13/04/2012 05:03:14
Need: Musician for short project.  Two spooky/compelling tracks required for a sci-fi/horror game.  Artistic control available for the ideal candidate.  Short deadlines, though (approximately two weeks for MAGS entry).  Details below, respond by PM or this thread.

Project Title: Wages of Darkness

Genre(s): Sci-fi, Horror, Thriller, MAGS (Monthly AGS competition)

Musical Requirements: Title Screen/Intro Cutscene theme (industrial sci-fi-ish?)
                                              In game music loop (suspenseful)
Maybe something sad for outro credits, if you feel like it.

Deadline: The game will be released April 30: NO LONG TERM COMMITMENTS!

Further Details: Available via PM.

Thank you for considering our project.

I'm updating my status from "fence sitting" to "all in, baby!"

Well, I don't exactly have any spare time at all these days, and I have several other projects on the go, but I will admit to playing around with ideas for this topic.  Anyone feel like making music/backgrounds for a short sci-fi/horror project?

Now, I'm really worried about the stuff in the Mason jar.

Frankly so am I.  It's some sort of witch's brew for my wife's bath.  I'm not entirely sure what the midwife put into it, but judging by the smell I'm certain there's at least a trace of eye-of-newt.  I regret not paying more attention to the making of the concoction, since I'm sure gathering the ingredients would make for quite the adventure!

He looks like a little Charlie Foxtrot! Best AGS baby introduction I've seen yet!

Good luck, Baron, it's a lot of fun. Make every second with him count... my little snake egg is going to be 5 on the 17th of this month :o I don't know where the time goes :'(

Tell me about it.  My daughter just turned 4.  Where does the time go?  (Baron double-clicks on AGS icon with no sense of irony)

Thanks for all the well-wishes!

I'm always excited to take on new projects.  Here's the latest:

I assure you he was already asleep before he reached Mr. Kalata's book -who could sleep through that?!?

Wish us luck!

edit: Sorry about the bear-bum.  I hope nobody got fired over that....

I was googling "Hockey Superiority" for an unrelated reason and stumbled onto this thread.  Here's a toughy......

Edit:
this sprite is meant to represent:  Ponch
and has been solved by:   Sane Co.

I'll set up my own DC School Board... with blackjack... and hookers.

This almost seems like a PR stunt to put people off online voting systems.

On second thought, forget the blackjack.

I submit that Snarky is c_leksutin, but in a different guise.  I mean, has anyone ever seen them in the same room together?  Think about it.

TALIBAN NERD: Look at this thing, it's so cool!  See how it works like a pop-up?

TALIBAN ENFORCER: The infidel commits blasphemy by imitating nature.  He must be destroyed!

TALIBAN NERD: We say that about everything the infidel does.  But seriously, check this out!  Even the stinger pops-up!

TALIBAN ENFORCER: A jihad upon those.....er.....

TALIBAN NERD: Microbiotic engineers?

TALIBAN ENFORCER:  No.  Those infidels!

TALIBAN NERD: Hey look, more of them!  See how they swarm, just like in nature?  Fascinating....

TALIBAN ENFORCER: God is most displeased at this incursion into His domain.  I relish the seventy virgins I will win in heaven through my martyrdom in a holy-war against this ungodly pop-uppery!

TALIBAN NERD: Hmmmm.  They seem to be massing around us.  I'm just going to-

**HYSTERICAL SCREAMING SOUNDS**

TALIBAN ENFORCER: No!  The virgins are useless to me now!!!!  Arrrrrgghghghghghh!!111!!!!!!

Really short, but not bad for a first effort.  Everything worked for me, but I have to say I was anticipating some more animation after seeing your contributions to the swarm project.  Any chance of OSD climbing onto the roof of the hut and waving his axe anxiously?

The puzzles were clever enough (given OSD's skewed perception of the universe)...
Spoiler
...but that spoon thing wasn't fair.  Maybe a hint if you try use individual items with the lamp that it's too hot to use at close quarters....

Looking forward to seeing future games.

Fascinating.... and yet terrifying at the same time.  At least they haven't designed them with a stinger..... yet.

Although I feel this bit:

And for those with the talent to do it well come the rewards because niche audiences that blossom into tribes exist for almost anything you can think of.

may be a bit overly optimistic.

I disagree.  The one guy who bought our game may yet blossom into a niche tribe.  He just needs more watering.

I wondered me what they think the great software's house as Lucas, Sierra etc. on the subject!!

Corporations may not have hearts or souls like people do..... well, some people anyway.  But you can't tell me that Sierra Log House Building up in the mountains didn't have spirit.  You know what I'm talking about: where the two guys from Andromeda get dropped off at the end of SQ3.  I don't know if that's actually where Ken really ran the company out of (and I've read that Ken was more about the money than the creation of awesomeness), but the idea of that rustic idyllic retreat as sanctuary for artistic brilliance has always inspired me.

As for copyright infringement, my personal philosophy would be "no profit, no foul."  If someone were to make a fan game in the Charlie Foxtrot universe (hey, it could happen!) then I wish them the best.  If someone tried to sell a Charlie Foxtrot game, I'd feel that crossed the line.  This is kind of the de facto position of the current copyright holders for Sierra and Lucas Arts games: Kings Quest remakes, new Space Quest episodes and Maniac Mansion Sequels (to name but a few) are all freely distributed despite technically infringing on those company's intellectual property rights.  In effect, they are just recognizing the realities of the internet -it would be far too expensive to completely wipe something off the net once it has gone viral (if only in a small way).  Nevertheless, I do agree that those houses, or whoever bought them out, do own their IP for commercial purposes until such time as their rights expire (although I think these timelines are far too long).
