Rules Schmules -the people who read them aren't often the people who break them.

But that AGS Graveyard thing is a great idea!  I've got a few projects I'd like to......inter.  You know, for closure's sake.  Somebody get a Noob to start the thread so I can praise him for doing something right.

Jeez, I'm beginning to think that I should start a game featuring my avatar, just to retain emotional ownership.  I'll name him Klaus Schlichter and -oh wait, that's the MAGS guy.  Ah, what the heck....

Ditto.  Except for the foot surgery part.  PMing now.

I had considered making adventure games back in the 1990s, but hadn't the skill set to know how to even start.  I happily stumbled upon AGS in August 2003, ran through the entire tutorial in about a month and then proceeded to stitch the random rooms I had made for that purpose into Al-Quest 1, which was completed in late December 2003.  If you crave game making glory immediately then MAGS is definitely the way to go -you get the feeling of having at least explored a creative idea and that all important rush of having finished something.

They laughed at me when I didn't change my avatar for three years -but who's laughing now?!?  Buwuhahahhahah!!!

It sounds like a very interesting game concept.  I'd recommend keeping the graphics pretty simple, since multiple agents dying multiple ways will exponentially increase the amount of animation work.  That Pitfall kind of look that you have already could work with just a few embellishments, but then I've got a soft spot for the old-old-school that isn't necessarily shared by the gaming community in general.

I guess what I'm really saying is that the lazier you are, the more likely my lifelong dream of being a template for a computer game super-villain will be finally fulfilled.  I say: MAKE THE GAME!

It came to pass with one of my really old games that all the links became outdated.  I noticed it, but couldn't remember the password to edit the entry.  I PMed a MOD and they reset the password for me -I think it was AGA or Andail: you know, one of those A--- guys.

There's a complete walkthrough of the game in this thread.  In general you can go wherever you want at any time, except where there is a barrier that requires an inventory item -then you need that inventory item!

So the performance issues I'm experiencing are due to nothing more than a long steady decline brought on by the passing of time?  I feel so.... middle aged all of a sudden :( .  I think I'll make the switch to my desktop permanent, and just look into buying a better monitor.  Thanks!

Game size would make sense, but my whole compiled folder is only 32 MB, and the last game I made using the same editor ended up at about 40MB.  I do have a larger number of sprites (about 1300 now), and no music yet, so it's very likely that the game files themselves are a lot bigger.  Still, I've read about people making bigger games and I experience the same problem when I try to open smaller projects now, which would make no sense if game size were responsible.
I've also tried reinstalling AGS 2.6 from a backup CD I made a while back and the new program hangs like the old one, so it's GOT to be something to do with the system.

Well, this is all a part of the walkthrough as I recall but the matches

are in the convenience store.  You have to distract the store keeper and then grab a pack.

As for the coal

it's charred onto something obvious.

And finally the rolling papers
Spoiler
I can't exactly remember the order of operations, but I think when you talk to the fortune teller she tells you that "what you seek is in your own backyard" or something like that.  If you try walking through the hedge in your backyard you end up going to a far away land where you find an Alice in Wonderland-type mushroom that shrinks you.  If you use that in conjunction with the rolling papers it creates a fake cigarette/joint that you can offer to the thug.

I hope that's useful!

No, on my old desktop both the editor and test-game run and load at normal speed (roughly 5 seconds to save the game in the editor, and roughly 5-10 seconds to compile and then go into game mode while testing.
On the laptop that has suddenly started experiencing problems the editor takes roughly 30 seconds to save the game, and it takes that long or longer to run the .exe from the game folder (before it took maybe 5-10 seconds).
It's weird that the version would run fine for so long and then experience these unexplainable problems....  I doesn't make sense that it is the editor itself, really.  Maybe I'll take the computer in to a repair shop and see what they think.
And yes, I've been meaning to update for a while, but I'm too committed with this game to convert (I understand there is a big difference between 2.6 and 2.7x), so it'll have to wait until I finish!

General Discussion / Editor Hanging

Hello,
I've been using the same AGS 2.6 editor for a year and a half on my laptop computer, but recently it has started to hang every time I try to test my game.  I discovered last week that if I didn't have a CD in my computer that it didn't hang, but now it happens no matter what I try.  When I go to the task manager I see that AGS is "Not Responding" so I end task, which consequently unhangs the game (so I can play it).  BUT, the editor is now closed so I have to open it up again and find my place to make modifications -a real pain.
Now this isn't a massive crisis since I've got my old desktop computer out of storage and everything runs fine on it, but it is less than ideal for drawing sprites and constantly switching between the two computers is an unappealing solution.  If I had to make an uninformed guess (not being terribly familiar with the technical side of this oversized calculator), I'd say that something on my laptop is eating up too much computing power.  I've deleted everything that I've installed since the problem first occurred to no avail.  I've also defragged and checked memory availability (75% of hard drive free).  Norton seems to think everything is cool too.
I've done some research on the Forums and it seems like this was an issue back in 2004, but I couldn't find any resolution.  I can still run the game from the .exe function in the game's folder, although it takes MUCH longer than usual to load, so it seems like it might be the same issue.  Does anyone know how this problem might be resolved?

Well, it's set up as a continuous loop on some levels, with an exit to the left on others.  If you go left three/four screens and don't get out, then go up or down and go left for another three or four screens.  If THAT doesn't work, go up/down again and then left for another 3-4 screens.   You will break out of the loop in a maximum of twelve rooms (I think eight, but it's been a while).

Ah, suburbia!
I think if you head to the left eventually you will get out.  Some of the rooms loop back to the right, so if that doesn't work, try heading up or down and then continuing to the left.

And the Winner is.....

When I asked for a story, I expected some sword play, maybe a princess waving her hands.  What I got was simply phenomenal!  I am amazed at everyone's contribution: pat yourselves on the back.  I know, I know.... patting yourself on the back just isn't the same.  So:  Illustrious, you pat Neelhound; Da_Elf can pat Theatrx; Monsoon gets to pat Postmodern Boy; Neelhound, please pat Da_Elf; Postmodern Boy will pat Illustrious, and  Theatrx can pat Monsoon.  Yay for everybody!  As usual, it was very difficult to choose a winner.

Without further ado, the awards ceremony:
The Golden Dragon goes to Postmodern Boy because his animation makes me laugh out loud everytime I see it.
The Silver Dragon goes to Da_Elf for an amusing twist to a familiar story: love that surprise ending!
The Bronze Dragon goes to Monsoon for an unexpected twist in a fairy-tale book format.   Realistically moving clouds (blowing the right way!), flag and characters (the rider bounces and the dragon floats) were also plusses.

But let's not forget our other entrants:
The Wooden Dragon goes to Neelhound, Theatrx and Illustrious for valiant efforts across the board.  Please don't consider it an insult that it's made of wood -I needed something worth less than bronze, but you all deserve commemoration for your efforts.
Theatrx:  Funny!  Not a classy kind of funny, but I appreciated it.
Neelhound: Your animation is definitely coming along: keep it up!
Illustrious: I hope to see more of your work in future rounds -remember to start earlier!  The competition threads are usually locked pretty quickly after a competition ends, but I encourage you to post your animation in the Critics Lounge after you've finished it.

And now I turn the competition over to Postmodern Boy for another sprite and another theme!

Another update (see first post).  I'll sweeten the deal since I'm double posting by releasing another in game screen shot -the bridge of the evil clone space station!  Is that Dark Helmet or Darth Vader?  Maybe it's a cross between Napoleon Bonaparte and Colonel Gadaffi?  As long as you're guessing there's no copyright infringement, right?

I'm always interested in more entries!  However, three days is a pretty long time....  and the fifteenth is on a Monday -do you really intend to work on it on a Monday?  I'll give you the weekend and judge the competition Sunday night (January 14, Eastern Standard Time, which will already be the fifteenth in most of the world anyway).
