Can't wait Grundislav, should be greta like the rest of the BJ games. And that last screenshot reminds me a lot of King's Quest 6... I think it was the Isle of the Beast or something... Anyway, anything that reminds me of KQ6 is sure to be amazing!

General Discussion / Re: The Who's Tommy movie
Tue 29/08/2006 05:10:37
Tommy's my favourite album of all time, and I love the movie as well. Domino, just for you, here's a rundown of the story in the album, along with changes made in the film in brackets.

Spoiler
Captain Walker, a fighter pilot in World War I (WWII in the movie), is shot down and thought to be dead. His wife gives birth to Tommy. She then goes on to meet another man and fall in love. However Tommy's dad is alive, and when he comes home and sees his wife with another man, he kills the other man (In the movie, the other man kills Cpt Walker). Scared that Tommy will someday tell someone about the murder, his parents tell him over and over that "He didn't see it, he didn't hear it, he won't say nothing to no one, never in his life." This traumatizes Tommy into becoming deaf, dumb and blind.

As Tommy grows up, his parents try many things in order to cure Tommy, including bringing him to the "Gypsy Queen", who shoots him up with heroin (Tina Turner), and a crazy preacher (Eric Clapton). Tommy gets tortured by his Cousin Kevin, molested by his Uncle Ernie, and learns how to play pinball very well. He gains a lot of fame with his pinball skills and ends up beating out the Pinball Wizard (Elton John), becoming the world pinball champion. One weird thing his parents notice is that Tommy spends a lot of time looking in the mirror, as if he can see his own reflection.

Eventually, his parents find a doctor who claims he can cure the boy. They take Tommy to him, but the doctor rules that Tommy has put up a mental block and the doctor says that no stimulation is strong enough to remove it. Annoyed with the fact that her son will never be normal again, Tommy's mother smashes a mirror that Tommy is looking in, and this causes his mental block to be lifted (In the movie, I believe Tommy falls through a mirror into a pool, curing him).

Since Tommy is already famous, the news of his miracle cure ends up elevating him to a god-like status. He begins to have followers, forming a sort of "Tommy Cult". The Tommy cult grows and grows, until finally Tommy decides to capitalize on his popularity, forming a Holiday camp in which he uses ear plugs, eye shades and corks to make visitors deaf, dumb and blind. He then makes them play pinball.

The cult becomes fed up with Tommy, either due to him selling out or just because he wsa a passing fad to the youth who are moving on, and the cult leaves him. (In the movie they destroy the Holiday camp as well)

THE END.

Phew. That said, I absolutely love the album, and can hum every single note (Even horn parts and drum fills, haha). The movie is a great adaptation, if a bit inferior musically.

Gaaah. I've been trying to get this game forever, but it's so expensive everywhere. I don't want to pay 42 bucks (Canadian) for it, without trying the darn thing. Call me cheap, but I want it to be more around the 30 bucks price range.

Just started playing earlier, awesome as usual, and I nearly died when I heard the classic Laura Bow "You pick it up, and place it in your purse."

General Discussion / Re: Poor kids of today...

Sure there's lots of crap today, but theyre always be the great ones that people look back to. When people get nostalgic about this generation of video games, I hope they look back on:

Metal Gear Solid (The "first one" for Playstation)
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
Psychonauts
Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind
Resident Evil 4
Super Smash Brothers Melee

These are all games that deserve classic status in 10 years. Heck, MGS is old enough to deserve classic status now. I could probably list more, I just got these from a quick glance up at my video game collection.

This thread has definitely reminded me of the South Park movie. You know the scene, where the kids find that German porn website.

"Ewww, it's a girl getting pooed on!"
"Is it Cartman's mom?"
"Ha ha, very funny guys."
"Dude, it IS Cartman's mom!"
"What's she doing now?"
"...EEEEUGH, sick!! Click it off!!"
"What the f**k is wrong with German people?"

Remember Titanic? It was, IMO, one of the most touching film in decades... maybe a bit slow at the beginning. I DARED to tell to my friends that it was a bit slow at the beginning. They allmost killed me. Then it won 11 oscars. I bought it in video. When that friends (The same who almost killed me for criticising it 6 months ago) saw that I had it in video, they almost killed me, because Titanic was "for sissies, with DiCapry, who sucks, and Kate Winslett, who is a fat whale bitch". Why this change?

It's the backlash sydrome. It happens when anything becomes too popular. Take the Bee Gees in the 70s for example. When Saturday Night Fever came out, the Bee Gees became super famous globally. They released a string of albums with tons of great songs on them. But then they became too popular, and all the sudden it was "cool" to hate the Bee Gees. Radio stations started having "Bee Gee Free Weekends" and the like.

I saw it happen again with the film Napoleon Dynamite. A few of my friends who had seen it in the theatre absolutely loved it. But when it got released on DVD, and became extremely popular, a couple of my friends started slagging it. It annoys me how people can change their opinion on something because of it's popularity. But of course, it's going to happen.

Back on topic, I liked Pirates 2. I had high expectations, since the first one was bloody brilliant in my opinion, and the second film ALMOST met my expectations. So I thought it was pretty good. I'm not going to outright hate it because everyone else loves it, nor am I going to love it because everyone else hates it. It was a good film with some great moments, regardless of how much money it's made.

And if you want to complain about length of movies, look at Superman Returns. I've never been so bored in my life.

-MillsJROSS

See, I absolutely loved Superman Returns. I didn't think it was too long at all. Pirates 2, however was a bit too long in my opinion. It all depends on whether the movie can interest you right away. I remember coming out of the theatre and turning to my girlfriend who had the same look on her face as me. It was a kinda "I liked Pirates 2, so why do I kinda feel like I wasted my time?". We both agreed later on that evening that Superman was better.

General Discussion / Re: Grim Fandango movie

While a Tim Burton Grim Fandango would be awesome, I'm pretty sure the Adventure Gamers Forum members have completely debunked this "announcement" as nothing but bollocks.

I thiknk the third one will be better, just because as I was watching it, I realised how much I missed Barbossa. Then he came back at the end, haha.

My complaint is that it just didn't flow as well as the first one. It felt very stilted, with many "little" scenes, and not enough character development. The only character I thought that actually evolved a bit from the first one was Elizabeth (Keira), who became more piratey.

I did like the fact that my favourite characters, the two "idiot" pirates (Gareth from the Office and the other one) and Captain Norrington (The guy from Coupling) were both in it more. But I found that the overall feel of the film just wasn't as magical as the first. Though I do admit, the wheel scene was well done.

It all boils down to this: I saw the first movie twice in the theatres and bought it the day it came out on DVD. The second one, I'll probably wait until it goes on the "Previously Viewed" shelf at Blockbuster before I buy it.

Finished Trilby's Notes, and it's another great addition to the Trilby games. I agree that the characters weren't as well written as in the first two games, but the added tension nearly made up for it. Some things I loved about the game:

Spoiler
The last puzzle. It's solution was one of the first things I tried, and I was glad that it worked, albeit you had to wait until the last possible second.

The random scares. Things like "it hurts" and Trilby turning into DeFoe/Welder. Very cool indeed.
[close]

Things I didn't like:

Spoiler
It definitely had a few plot holes. Things like why was Simone murdered? It was set up as if she was murdered by the Welder (Long, machete-esque wound), but besides Trilby's weird halucinations, the Welder wasn't even in the game. It could have been that Lenkman murdered Simone in order to get Trilby to the hotel, but then why did the STP confirm supernatural involvment in the muder?

Also, the idol seems a bit confusing. We know that mucking about with it on July 28th gives the Tall Man the right to kick ass. But what about DeFoe? Since DeFoe's body was destroyed in 5 Days, it should explain why the Idol no longer possesses anyone with DeFoe's spirit. So why then, does it possess so many people in 7 Days? Furthermore, 7 Days takes place over a July 28th, so why wouldn't the Tall Man come kick some ass on the ship?

Hopefully the last game answers some of these questions...

General Discussion / Re: Happy Canada Day!

Happy Money, err, I mean Canada day!!

Haha, I'm working today for 8 hours, and I get time and a half since it's a holiday, so to me it's less celebration, more "cha-ching".

Speaking from my own experiences here: My parents very rarely shielded me from anything in the media. I mean, in 1991, when I was 4 years old, they took me to see Terminator 2 in the theatres. And according to my dad, I loved it. I remember watching it over and over on VHS at a very young age, only hiding my eyes in the part where Arnie rips off his arm to prove he's a robot.

The role of the parents, in my opinion, is to educate the kids about what they're seeing. The sex scenes in Fahrenheit are both between two consenting adults, who want to have sex with each other, so what's so wrong about it? There's nothing overly pornographic about the two scenes, if anything the bit of nudity in there is to remind the player that the characters are indeed having sex.

My parents always explained to me why characters were being violent, and never really shielded me from any video games (My mom once told me to not repeat what Duke was saying in Duke Nukem 3d, but that was it).

I find that kids at a young age deal with things themselves. Like, for instance, I wouldn't show a movie with excessive violence/nudity/gore/swearing to a 9 year old, but say there's a bit of blood or a bit of nudity in the the movie, I think it's fine. I remember when I was around 9, whenever people starting heavily kissing in a movie, I'd just hide my eyes. Same with blood (Now, as a 9 year old, I like both, haha).

Also, as a 19 year old, I have a bit more intelligence to judge the situation unfolding around me. My girlfriend's little sister is 11, and I can see the same things I did happening to her. She hides her eyes during kissing and what not. Her parents are a bit more strict about what she watched than mine, but that's their choice and I'm not arguing it.

I think I'm almost about done my rant, if you will, about censoring things for younger children. Many different parents have many different ways of doing it, and I accept that. I'm not trying to preach that how I was raised was the best (By the way, I should state that I've never been in a fight and never raped anyone), basically all it boils down to is whether or not the parents are paying attention to what their kids are watching/playing.

THE END. *Happy sigh and flourish*

General Discussion / Re: New Yahtzee Game

I'm excited. I don't care about the drama *GASP*, and really enjoy Yahtzee's games. But seriously, he's retired from game making more times than the Who have retired from touring.

Okay, so I decided, to be fun, I'd pick some of your blurbs from last year about movies that have already come out, and make some reactions to them... Here wo gooooo!

Quote
Curious George
Will Ferrell stars as The Man in the Yellow Hat, a gentleman who looks after his pet monkey - an inquisitive and wonderful creature whose enthusiasm often gets the best of him.
Starring: Drew Barrymore as ?, Will Ferrel as The Man in the Yellow Hat, etc.
This should be interesting. It's categorized as an animation/adventure, but not a family movie. Neato.

Not catagorized as a family movie? Apparently someone at IMDB really screwed up on that one. If the movie itself didn't put you to sleep, the Jack Johnson soundtrack surely would.

Final Destination 3
Okay, completely different cast this time around. So it's nothing like the first two. Then why make it a sequel? Ask Hollywood.

Well, I loved this one. I was a big fan of the first two, and this one ramped it up even more with interesting characters and even gorier deaths. I don't care if they make a million of these, I'll continue to watch them. So many people rant about how slasher movies suck, but hey, that's the POINT!

QuoteMission: Impossible III
Starring: Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt, Ving Rhames as Luther Stickell, Laurence Fishburne, Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, etc.
Nice! I want to see this one, because, let me tell you, the first two kicked my ass!

J.J. Abrams rules. 'Nuff said.

QuoteThe Pink Panther
A prequel to the 1964 Peter Sellers original film, where the detective must solve the murder of a famous soccer coach and find out who stole the infamous Pink Panther diamond.
Geez, for a second I thought the Pink Panther would actually be in it.

Well... The animated Pink Panther *IS* in the credits sequence... Which, ironically enough, is the funniest/most entertaining part of the film.

X-Men 3
I'm not a big action movie fan, but this one looks okay.

X3: The Last Bland. Seriously, you were bang on for this prediction. X3 was the perfect example of one of those movies that was completely middle of the road okay. Okay fight scenes, okay acting, a couple good lines (Most of Magento's), a couple really bad lines (I'm the Juggernaut, BITCH!). Not one I'd want to see again.

Well... That's all for right now. Always love your look at future movies, so here's to a glorious next year!

What about cyber men? Also are you going to include the doctors trusty sonic screwdriver? How about K9 that robotic dog, I think hes cool.

Well, considering the game stars the fourth Doctor and Sarah Jane Smith, I'd assume K9 would be in it. The perso working on the game hasn't posted in a while though, hopefully we'll hear some news on it soon.

And if you are reading this, don't forget to give the Doctor some jelly babies in his inventory. And make "Would you like a jelly baby?" a dialog option many, MANY times.

The ultimate worst part about this day... No it's not the Antichrist, no it's not all the random occurences of the number 666... It's that a horrible "The Omen" remake comes out in theatres today. Seriously, why couldn't they have just rereleased the original?

I absolutely love Choose Your Own Adventures. I think I only had one OFFICIAL one (Though many copycats), and it was about killer ants or some such stuff.

The best part about those books is that if you screwed up, you totally died. I hope in "modernizing" the books, they don't remove the endings in which you die, because they were the best endings of all. Of course, they were horrible when you were a kid, but now, thinking back, it's pretty outrageous that a kids book would allow you to get eaten/mutilated/fall off something/drowned, etc...
