General Discussion / Re: Movies Based on Games
Tue 01/02/2005 00:07:06
My small reviews of Video-Game based movies...

Super Mario Brothers: Terrible, but I love it so.
Street Fighter: I remember thinking it was bad when it first came out (Probably was... 5 at the time, haha.)
Double Dragon: Pure crap. Not many people even remember it.
Resident Evil: Not half bad. Enjoyed it.
RE Apocalypse: Haven't seen it. Want to, to laugh, but don't want to pay to rent it.
Tomb Raider 1: Bad.
Tomb Raider 2: Not touching it with a 10-Foot pole.
Mortal Kombat: Highly entertaining, despite being a rip-off of Enter the Dragon.
Mortal Kombat 2: Haven't seen it.
FF Spirits Within: Oooooh, looks preeeeetty... Can't remember much else, except I enjoyed it at the time.

Sorry about the delay!

What is the Photoshoppin' Contest?

See this link:
http://www.somethingawful.com/photoshop/

And for other examples, see here:
http://www.worth1000.com/

The two above websites should give a fair idea of what is involved. Also you can check out the earlier Photoshop contests in this forum.

Note: Photoshopping isn't drawing a completely new image -- It's editing images to create a new image, such as editing one image or combining several images.

Also, you don't have to specifically use Photoshop -- Paint Shop Pro, Gimp or any other ~equally good programs can be used.

This fortnight's topic!!
Video Game Board Games!

Inspired partly by the plethora of Board Game photoshops on SomethingAwful.com, I've decided that the topic of this Photoshop shall be board games! The goal is to convert the video game of your choice into a semi-plausible board game.

Example: The Game of Death You and your friends play through the game board as different coloured Manny Caleveras on a four year journey! Be the first to reach the end of the afterlife to win!

NOTE: The games in this photoshop don't specifically have to be adventure games, but considering this is an adventure game board... But don't think you can't submit "Monopoly: City 17 edition" or something.

General Discussion / Re: see any films lately?

Last Film I saw: "Hellboy Director's Cut" on DVD (Watched half of "Chaplin" last night, but not counting it as I haven't finished it yet), that was on Friday.

Best Film I've seen: Hard to say. Probably "Forrest Gump" or "The Princess Bride"

Biggest Lump of Cow Crap I've ever seen: Must mention all of them. "Battlefield Earth", "Species", "The Cat in the Hat", "Wicked Stepmother", and the latest addition "Alone in the Dark" (Though that last movie was great entertainment, it was a terrible movie.)

According to IMDB, his next projects are:

Bloodrayne (In Post-Production already)
Hunter: The Reckoning
FarCry

I mean COME ON. It's obvious that he's crap at making video game films. So *WHY* does he continue to do them?!

Oz: The main character in the movie, along with in the games, is named Edward Carnby. Both movie and game Carnby are paranormal investigators.

That's the end of the similarities.

I just thought you guys might want some more info on how bad the movie is... Here's some fun facts:

-The plot is so confusing (Not because it's difficult to understand, but because Uwe Boll can't tell a story properly) that there's actually 3 minutes of just narrated text at the start, explaining the whole backstory (And essentially ruining the ending).

-The special effects are pitiful, especially during a fight scene in Christian Slater's apartment (Which is apparently a massiv warehouse...), in which there is literally just shots of people shooting guns against a BLACK BACKGROUND. Once the fight ends, the warehouse is visiable again.

-The music is terrible. Why is there no music during the huge Starship Toopers-esque battle at the end, yet tribal drumming as Christian Slater walks around doing nothing?

-The dialog is even worse. I believe that the f-word was inserted into the lines just to get the film to a higher rating, as there was barely any blood/gore (Stephen Dorf's character gets the brunt of the f-word insertions).

-The plot is STILL so bad, that Christian Slater narrates everything he's doing just to keep the audience in the know.

-Some characters (IE: Stephen Dorf's character) are TOO dynamic, changing their motivations on a dime.

-The movie was only an hour and a half long, but felt like four hours.

That's it for today, maybe I'll post some more later, I have a ton of them.

I saw it last night (Thursday), in a special sneek peek.

I personally had a great time. Mainly because the whole audience was laughing with me at how terrible the movie was.

Seriously, if you don't like movies that are complete pieces of shit, don't go see it.

Yeah, I know that Ron Glibert wasn't involved with Monkey Island 3, but I seriously think that it's an amazing game, and fits in quite nicely with the first two. I don't think it suffered from a lack of input from Ron Gilbert.

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure MI3 would've been even better with Ron Gilbert at the helm, but I still think it's an amazing game.

Oh man, CMON! I'm sorry, but I can't believe anyone actually thought that they had bought EXCLUSIVITY rights... for comics about VIDEO GAMES!

Think about how impossible that would be! It was a JOKE.

Sheesh.
#209
Well, nothing WRONG with it per se (Though many people argue this), but it's just not as enjoyable as the first three, in my opinion. It's still a fun adventure, but when I play it, I just don't get the same feeling as playing the others.

The Secret of Monkey Island
The Secret of Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge
The Curse of Monkey Island
Escape from Monkey Island

Hope you enjoy them! They're all great games, the first three classics in my opinion.

Wow, thanks SpacePirat- Errr, Mr. Dictator, sir.

I'll have a new topic up within a few days, just as soon as I think of a... Well... A good topic, haha.

Thanks again, and great entries everyone!

(And to clarify, I don't think King's Quest was ever released on Dreamcast. That box art is obviously from the Sega Master System port of the game, the grey squares give it away. Most likely there's a SMS emulator out from dreamcast, and someone just made that cover to print out.)

General Discussion / Re: Books V.S. Movies
Wed 19/01/2005 00:35:04
My favorite book to movie conversion:

"The Princess Bride" by S. Morge- Errr, William Goldman. Seriously, I love the movie just as much as I love the book. Hmmm, could it be because the book and the screenplay were written by the same person?

...Probably.

Enken, that sounds like a bug in the AGS engine itself, it wouldn't really have anythign to do with the way we coded the game.

But thank you for the compliments, I'm glad you enjoyed the game!

I'm probably one of the only people who don't actually mind the whole Steam thing. If there's one thing that making video games has taught me, is some morals about pirating. I'm against pirating video games that you can still buy in stores, which is why I like the Steam system. I've never had a problem with it, I pre-loaded my copy of the game, unlocked it at midnight the day it came out, and played after school the next morning, all without trouble.

I've never had any trouble with Steam, and I think that Valve has the right sort of idea on it.

However, I don't like the whole iTunes, WMA and mp3 with DRM encryption. I mean, I download quite a bit of music, but if anything, it's actually made me buy more CDs and records (Yes, vinyl, I collect it). It's a good way to preview something.

DVDs I have no gripe about, mainly because I have an all region player, haha.

Considering I'm not a part of any religion, as I don't believe in any of them, I'd definitley join the AGS religion. Hahaha, I'd be a great story to tell people when they ask you what you believe in.

Mills, I'm in the same boat as you. I shake like there's no tomorrow. Except it's not just my hands that shake, usually it's a whole side of my body.

For example, this year, I was asked to play Last Post on my trumpet at my Rememberance Day (Veteren's Day for those in the US) ceremony in front of the whole school.

Now, I don't know about you, but playing Last Post in front of WWII veterans and 1,200 students, with all of their eyes on you, and the whole place silent... That's pretty hard. Not to mention the trumpet is an instrument which requires a strong mouth position. And with one whole side of my face not able to stand still, it makes playing HARD.

Stupid shakyness.

Wow, this looks really cool. I'll be sure to download the demo when I get home!

QuoteSomebody mentioned Edward Norton in a post here somewhere...

"I wanted to destroy something beautiful."

EDIT: Whoops! Wrong movie. Thought it was Fight Club at first... Now realise that it's American History X... I had completely forgotten that Edward Norton was in that movie, just because he's such a good actor, and so different in that movie, that it's hard sometimes to tell it's him.

Being a huge Who fan (Toomy is my FAVORITE album of all time), I was actually surprised that I enjoyed your cover of "We're not going to take it"! The vocals were very Roger Daltrey-esque, even sounded quite a bit like him. The drum fills seemed to rush quite a bit though, making the whole song speed up for a few moments.

Hey... Could you PM me with the IP too! I can't stand Counter-Strike on public servers, but I like playing with people I know aren't idiots.
